Mill Valley is a picturesque California town of 14,000 residents and creative hideaway situated on the eastern slope of Mount Tamalpais. Nestled among redwoods, hills and canyons, Mill Valley is only ten minutes north of the Golden Gate Bridge and City of San Francisco, yet less than one hour from Sonoma and Napa Wine Country.
Historical Mill Valley has a unique village charm as well as its human environment-uniquely combining tranquility and liveliness, privacy and community involvement. Starting in 1905 with The Dipsea Race, the first cross-country race in the country, Mill Valley has a rich cultural tradition with the Mountain Play in 1913, the Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival in 1957, the Marin Theatre Company, a professional regional theatre in 1966, the Mill Valley Film Festival in 1978 and the 142 Throckmorton Theatre recently revived, although in existence since 1915. Re-opened in February 2012, after a lengthly absence, is the Sweetwater Music Hall located in the remodeled Masonic Hall right down town.
Mill Valley is surrounded by the picturesque City of Sausalito, 10 minutes south and the Town of Tiburon 10 minutes east with Angel Island State Park only a one mile ride (via Angel Island-Tiburon Ferry), all on San Francisco Bay. Although Mill Valley is close to San Francisco, it is adjacent to the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and only 10 minutes to the Muir Woods National Monument and Tennessee Valley Trail head, 20 minutes to Muir Beach, or Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, 30 minutes to Stinson Beach and less than an hour to Point Reyes National Sea Shore. Mill Valley is only a 2-1/2 hour day trip to Monterrey and Carmel and four hours to spectacular Lake Tahoe or Yosemite National Park.

We absolutely loved our month-long stay at Sally and Michael's warm, modern home in the redwoods. Not only was the interior perfectly appointed, but the garden was a sanctuary of birds of all kind and the perfect place to enjoy outdoor living.
This home is full of delight. As you walk up the outside steps you open a gate and enter into a sunny lush garden, complete with waterfall, bird feeders, outdoor furniture and grill. The surprise continues when you enter the bright, sunny living room in which every window offers framed views of oaks, sycamores, and redwoods or the lovely garden. It made the perfect retreat after days of excursions around the Bay Area.
We fell in love with Mill Valley as the charming walkable village that spread out below us. Thanks to the personal suggestions from Sally and Michael, we experienced all the arts and culture and exceptional dining that was just a few blocks away. It's also an incredible location for day hikes, trips to the beach, and just a short drive to SF for museums and city attractions.
Our walks down nearby Cascade Drive was like being in Muir Woods, only it was a 10 minute walk from our home. Dinners and brunch at Mill Valley Beerworks were among our best meals during our stay. Experiencing the Throckmorton Tuesday night comedy only added to the local charm.
We count this as one of our favorite vacation destinations, and the memories we made will be etched in our hearts and minds. Thank you so very much, Sally and Michael, for being such thoughtful hosts! We hope to see you next year, if not sooner!
This was our 3rd stay and we still love being in the midst of the redwoods and yet only a 2-minute stroll from downtown Mill Valley. Despite the rainy weather, we were cosy. We didn't cook our Thanksgiving dinner at the house, but did manage a couple of contributions - a pie and the cranberry sauce. Sally and Michael are so accommodating - we feel very welcome.
We enjoyed the lovely older house set on a hillside above the owner's home. Sally was very welcoming to our little family which was here to share our new grandchild with family and friends from the Bay Area.
It was perfect to be able to walk right down the street to the plaza area of the old downtown, or to find a hike.
The house has a lovely garden and patio, perfect for entertaining. The kitchen is well-appointed and the interior of the house is charming.
We would like to return sometime to continue to explore Mill Valley.
This property is like being in a treehouse. A lot of steps but worth it when you're up there. Great beds, too!
We had a wonderful stay at this gorgeous house in Mill Valley. The property was extremely comfortable, full of character and style and at times felt like being in a tree house with so much greenery and wildlife surrounding us. The location was fantastic, only minutes to the lovely centre of Mill Valley. We could not have been happier with our stay there, Sally was on hand to help with any queries we had, I would definitely give this 5 stars and a top recommendation!
This lovely vacation home boasts extraordinary attention to detail. We were lucky enough to stay for a week when the gardens were in full bloom. The garden... and the home itself ...have been meticulously planned and decorated. Part of the reason why we like to stay with VRBO is so that we can cook our own meals if we like, and this kitchen had everything we could possibly need. A few major supermarkets are minutes away by car, but by far it is more fun to walk right into the Mill Valley historic district and shop at the local market. The skillfullly decorated rooms had simple yet interesting accent pieces . Beds were new and comfortable and complete with pretty high end linens. A hop skip and a jump from the Golden Gate bridge made going into the city a breeze, while some of our party popped up to Sonoma for the day. Our hosts, Sally and Michael made us feel welcome and cared for. We were looking for a "home away from home" and this absolutely exceeded our expectations.
