Guestbook comments from the owner

We were very surprised to find such a nice house in such a beautiful location: The wild water behind the house and the woodpath leading up to viewing the Irish Sea. It was a great pleasure spending there four days and we would have liked having a longer holiday

A great place to stay. Cottage was lovely and clean with all essentials provided.

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed or 4 night stay. There's not much to do in thornthwaite but it's a great base for exploring other places. We enjoyed Keswick and Cockermouth. We would certainly visit again.

Cosy and comfortable in peaceful location

  • 5 of 5

Talcomb was a great find. It is located in such a pretty setting, surrounded by woods, with views of the mountains from the rear side. Easy off road parking is very handy. The cottage has a well equipped kitchen with everything you need. The lounge is particularly lovely, with new sofa and armchairs, plenty big enough for four adults to be seated comfortably. It was a welcome place to return to after long mountain walks. There is no bath here, but the shower works well. I would be very happy to stay here again.

A cosy, compact cottage well sited in close range of wonderful views and walks.

  • 4 of 5

A comfortable and homely place, good value for money and generally well provided- though there needs to be investment in bigger saucepans if you are going to cook pasta for four people! We'd go back again.

Quaint cottage in a very quiet (but highly-accessible) location.

  • 4 of 5

The pictures of this cottage do not really do it justice. It was bigger than we'd expected it to be but sufficiently small, so as to retain its quaint, intimate feel. The living room was a cool refuge from the heat of the day; and we enjoyed many relaxed meals at the dining table. There was no extraneous noise; apart from the (highly desirable) sound of a babbling brook. Whinlatter forest is right on the doorstep & afforded a number of safe walks for our dog. The shower unit was efficient & there was plenty of hot water. The cottage was excellent value for money & we would definitely stay there again.

Small and quaint cottage in a tiny hamlet.

  • 5 of 5

Talcomb is small but suited the three of us (five if you count the dogs) perfectly. The inside was slightly dated but very clean with lovely bed linen and towels. The shower was good and warm as was the whole house, and it was a very cold week. The coal fire in the main room was a cosy treat. Just a short walk up the road and you are in the Whinlatter forest park which is spectacular. A half hour walk from the back of the house takes you into Brathwaite village which has a small shop and a couple of pub/ hotel restaurants. Keswick is a ten minute drive and has supermarkets and everything you could need really.

The kitchen was well equipped but could have been improved with some basic tea making things on arrival. We bought a cheap cafeteria and left it behind for future guests. A dishwasher would have been nice but there just isn't room for one. The hoover was very strong but needed emptying and the filter was clogged and smelt bad so we cleaned it. A suggestion, perhaps replace the bench outside with one with storage for boots so that they can be left outside as there isn't really room in the kitchen for muddy boots.

We would strongly consider coming again if it wasn't for the lack of WiFi. The lack of a consistent signal is a real issue for those of us who have to keep in contact professionally even when on holiday.

Good Value, basic accommodation

  • 3 of 5

At the time of booking, this was by far the cheapest place available for a mid week break in January.

Its not going to win any awards and the first night was pretty cold as we had to wait for the following day for the storage heaters to kick in - but overall the cottage is quite well equipped and comfortable.

The village of Thornthwaite is exceptionally quiet for the Lake District. No pubs, cafes etc - which will suit some - especially in the summer when the area can get so busy.

There are walks through the forest up to Whinlatter from the door and the village is in a good location for accessing walks in Borrowdale, Buttermere, Skidaw etc. Also good if wanting to visit towns of Keswick and Cockermouth

The owner provides coal and a bit of kindling so its nice to have a coal fire. Our only suggestion would be some sort of portable heater for that first night.....and a few more fire lighters

Overall - good value and comfortable
