About the property

Renovated classic town house in Playa Santiago – the perfect setting for you

This special house of 130 m2 + 120 m2 rooftop - is situated in the middle of Playa Santiago, only 250 meters from the beach. From the rooftop you overlook the sea, the village, the harbor, and the mountains.

The house is situated on Calle La Banda, with a pedestrian street in front and La Banda behind. You can enter the house from both the pedestrian street as well as from the street.

The entrance door from the pedestrian street leads into a patio, here is an avocado tree – sometimes good avocados around Christmas.

From the patio you can go up to the rooftop - or enjoy the house below.

On the ground floor you find a bathroom with double shower, from the patio you can also enter the open hallway leading to all the rooms below. It is rather special with an open hallway, and it gives the house a lot of air and a nice, open feeling. An open hallway is possible, as we on average have less than 3 rainy days a year, and open hallways or courtyards are typical Canary style to create a bit of breeze in the houses. The hallway leads directly to kitchen, living room and 3 bedrooms.

The master bedroom has a double queen size bed and a ceiling fan. Furthermore the house has one more double bedroom with a double queen size bed, a twin bedded room - and a room with a single bed.

A big living room with leather sofas as well as a dining area. Here you find television, dvd, stereo and lots of books. The television is cable connected to the telephone company for cable television as well as internet connected, so feel free to search.

The ground floor also has a complete kitchen with granite tabletop, electric stove with oven, combined fridge/freezer, dishwasher, electric kettle, blender, food processor etc.

The rooftop is split in two: the semi covered patio containing a living area - and the sun terrace.

The “patio” is closed towards Calle La Banda and in both ends. In one end we have the staircase towards Calle La Banda and a bathroom with double shower, in the other end a complete kitchen. This area is open towards the sun terrace to give you a complete feeling of open air living and giving you the views.

The kitchen here is also a complete kitchen with granite table tops, and a built-inn gas cooker and fridge. The kitchen on the first floor has all amenities apart from dishwashing machine and oven, which you find in the kitchen below. Furthermore you find a gas barbacue here so you dont need to go downstairs to do the cooking

The patio area also have a king size bed, and a dining table that holds 8 persons, when extended.

The other half of the rooftop is open with plants and stunning views. Her you find a dining table, as well as sun chairs.

We even keep a hammock so you can swing in the late afternoon sun getting the last of the rays while "preparing" for the evening.

When we stay in the house we sleep and live on the rooftop, only using the downstairs when accessing the washing machine. It is a different feeling sleeping on the rooftop – a different sense of freedom.

When you arrive the house will be ready for you, with beds made according to your wish. The house comes with all linen etc, so you just bring your personal necessities. If you need cleaning of the house during your stay, please let us know.

About The Owner

We bought this property back in 2006 as we love La Gomera. Back then it was a different house but we did see the potential. We built the rooftop completely according to our wishes of making the most of the outdoor feel and the stunning views.

As we have experience in renovating houses we took this task upon ourselves, spending a long time going through all the different options to make it exactly like we wanted. That process was long and at the same time very rewarding, as we ended up getting a very personal house - exactly as we had pictured it.

Downstairs we renovated the rooms one by one - putting up paintings - and bringing some of our favorit furniture from Denmark to the house.

We lived in the house a long period - and are currently living in Latvia - thus we can rent out the house.

We love spending time in the house - and we prefer to do the cooking ourselves. Thus we have put a lot of effort into having not 1 but 2 kitchens in the house - both completely with all what you need to do your cooking - and having a good time doing it. In the rooftop kitchen we put up a small table called the bar/salat table - as we just enjoy making a salat - and at the same time taking in the magnific view of the town, harbour and the water. Once the cooking is done - or the barbeque is simmering - we often just relax here with a glass of wine, taking in the fact that we have this amazing option in our lives.

Everything you need is here, from glasses for water, white- and red wine to pots and pans- so you can say we have made the property ready for use - just need to add you!

Why The Owner chose Alajeró

If you want a truly different stay on a fantastic island this is it. Here you do not get a typical house build for turists. You get an opportunity to live in the old town of Playa Santiago - amongst Spanish people living their everyday life. At the same time you have everything to yourself once you are inside the patio door.

Everything is so close by - and at the same time you can do as you want, when you want - having the luxury of a unique house different from everything else. A ground floor in a "old but totally renovated" house - and an upstairs so different from everything else.

Imagine being able to live on the top of a house - being able to watch the fishing boats coming or leaving while making your dinner - or just lazing around having a great time in the sun - still only 10 meters away from the kitchen and the fridge or the coffee pot - while working out how to use the rest of your precious day, like walking to the beach approx 200 meters, or the plaza a few meters shorter, the pier a bit longer or ?? just hanging out enjoying life.

Everything is within walking distance from French bakery to German dentist (and they speak German, English and Spanish)

What makes this house unique

You can live 100% on the roof top - meaning you live under a semi cover, where you have kitchen, bathroom, king size bed, as well as "living room" with table etc - and of course this is directly connected with the sun terrace. Here the tough decisions are: Shall we eat in the shade - or in the sun?

In other words: You get 2 houses in one.

The house comes with 2 mountain bikes.

Furthermore this is not a typical "turist house" it is an old house in town - built so long ago that nobody knows when. We have renovated the house completely but kept an eye on keeping some of the original feel in the house.

Furthermore you get to experience a house, where you can enter the house from above - descending one floor to access the roof - or you can enter the house at ground level from a pedestrian street - walking straigt into the patio where you find our avocado tree.

To make your stay more comfortable we also have a double hammock, which you may put up between the covered part of the roof and the terrace. The house also comes with 4 sun chairs for lazy days reading in the sun or ... When booking with us you can always contact us and ask any questions about La Gomera - and we shall do our best to help you or give our suggestions. As we live part time in the house ourselves, we have a lot of art on the walls - as well as some furniture that has been passed down through generations. It all adds to the flavor of a house with love and character.

Very comfortable Spanish house with sea views

My wife and I have had several long stays at the house. It's a hop, skip and a jump from the port and convenient to everything in Santiago - the beach, shops, restaurants, bars, La Tecina hotel etc. It makes no pretence to be flashy which is what is so nice about it ....but it has absolutely everything you need - comfortable bedrooms, two excellently provided kitchens, two bathrooms, a fantastic inside and outside roof terrace for lounging, cooking and eating, even sleeping under the stars! It's very well maintained and clean. The owners have always been extremely kind and helpful. It's a highly recommendable property in La Gomera. In our view, Santiago is the nicest spot on the island, with by far the most reliable and consistent weather. You can walk, cycle and swim to your heart's content!

Gek huis met geweldig groot terras en buitenkeuken, maar wel onlogisch allemaal. Netjes schoon..

Prima locatie daar, beste plek op La Gomera! Maar de foto's op de site tonen niet de werkelijke indeling van het huis, want het zit nl. boven elkaar. De buitenkeuken en het terras zijn perfect bij mooi weer, maar het echte huis zit daaronder, en is wat benauwd, zeker omdat de luiken niet vastgezet kunnen worden, dus dan zit je binnen in het donker... Daar zit ook een tweede keuken, allemaal netjes voor elkaar, maar waar lag de boter ook al weer, boven of beneden? En als het gas boven op is, moet je die zelf vervangen. Op di. en vr. komt er toeterend een vrachtautootje langs, maar je moet het maar willen. Dus dan beneden maar elektrisch gekookt, moet je wel met alle pannen de trap op naar boven, onhandig. Dat zijn ook de (prima) 4! douches en 2 toiletten, die zijn buitendeurs, dus 's-nachts even een paraplu meenemen als het regent.. Jammer. Maar het went! Echt wel een bijzondere plek, mooi rustig stil met prima uitzicht ook over wat water, en een goede plek om het eiland te verkennen, want nl. 2 uitvalswegen. Genoeg documentatie aanwezig, mooie eenvoudige wandelingen ook te maken nabij, vooral bij Alajero. (doe ook laag rondje om de kapel-berg!)

Alles is aanwezig, werkt, fantastische stereo CD speler ook. Krant is onvindbaar, maar gewoon in straatje pal onder het huis te verkrijgen, vanaf 12:00 uur!

We hebben er 18 dagen gezeten, helaas met af en toe wat minder weer, maar toch altijd wel wat zon, want het is hier de beste plek. We kwamen niets te kort in dit huis. Wifi prima, boven en onder, helaas geen BVN.

Bij hogere temperaturen perfect, bij onder de 16 wat somber. Regen geen probleem, want overdekt buiten terras. Oh ja, kijk uit voor lamp in beneden toilet: die hangt te laag....

Our house is situated in the middle of the little fisherman's village, Playa Santiago on the south, sunny side of La Gomera . In Playa Santiago you can often watch the rainbow abow the mountains in Alajero - but not getting a single drop in Playa Santiago. As a matter of facts some years we do not get a single shower during the year - so when you want a sun secure holiday Playa Santiago is the place. One year we experienced blue sky from midt december to mid march every single day not a cloud to cover just a bit of the blue -

At the same time if you want to see different scenery you can go to the rainforest on top of the island where it is cooler.

You can hike down from the rainforest in the national park to the beach in playa Santiago any day - thus normally going through a climate change from say 8 degrees and rain in the park to 25 degrees and sun on the beach where you stay in our house in some 4 hours.

(that is our favorite hike by the way!)

You can get to our house with the local ferry that goes directly to the harbour of playa Santiago - and you can get around in busses. Depending on what you want you can make this holiday without a car or rent a car - depending on what you like.

You can also take small trips on our mountain bikes (we have 2) or you can hire bikes in Playa Santiago.

(mind you La Gomera is Hilly and you do not get to another town without getting a good sweat worked up as you have to go up to around a 1000 meters before the road goes down again or forks.

You can do hikes on your own or you can attend group hikes being picked up at the Hotel Tecina, you can go whale watching from Playa Santiago on a 4 hour trip that includes swimming and lunch - a great getaway for part of the day - so you can do a lot of things without having to arrange transportation yourself. Furthermore the golf course as well as the tennis/paddle/squash cords are also within walking distance - as it is situated at hotel Tecina

La Gomera being one of the real pearls of the Canary Islands.

La Gomera is the second smallest of the Canary Islands. Although being small the island is extremely diverse, having a dry south side, where the sun always shines, and a north side where it's lush and green - and rainy. On the top of the island we have a National Park - where the only rain forest in Europe is located. The park and forest is a Unesco reserve. Up here it's always rather cold - so do bring a sweater when going. In the park you have the highest point of the island. From the top you can see La Palma, El Hierro, Tenerife, and sometimes even Gran Canaria on a clear day. La Gomera is a perfect place for hiking. 'Little Nepal' hikers call La Gomera. Many of the hikes follow the ancient guanche paths, which the original population of the islands used as their 'highways' when walking from one place to the other.

La Gomera has a lot of deep ravines so you can stand in one point and look at another with a short distance between but working that distance is a different matter - maybe therefore the silbo (whistling language) was invented here.

Other activities: La Gomera is famous for it's wonderful hikes!

Golf: We have a fine golf course approx 1.5 km from our house - with a great wiev to Tenerife and Teide - and the blue sea.

Diving: You can participate in diving and cayaking arranged by Hotel Tecina.

Swimming: You can swim in the ocean from all around the Island. We are only 250 meters form the beach and the port. On calm days swimming from the beach is great. On rough days swimming in the port, protected by the pier, is better. If you like swimming in a swimmingpool, Playa Santiago offers 3 different options. Hotel Tecina has a pool beside the beach and a pool up by the hotel. Also HPB at Santa Ana has really fine pool facilities.

The rates indicated are in EUROS and for 1 week. We normally ONLY ACCEPT 2-weeks rentals.
The prices indicated are for 1-4 people.
Additional persons will be charged at 10 euro per person per night, on top of the mentioned price.

Cleaning at end of a stay is charged at euro 100,-, which are to be added to the rent rate.

When booking a deposit of 50% is to be paid.
The remaining 50% must be paid minimum 30 days before the rental period start
If you cancel your reservation more than 30 days before your booked period starts, you loose your deposit.
If you cancel your reservation before that, you must pay 50% of the rental sum.
If you do not pay the remaining 50% in time, we are allowed to cancel your reservation without refund of the deposit.
