Situated on 1.3 acres of land on top of a mesa in Apple Valley, Utah (4400 feet above sea level), the Gooseberry Mesa lodge is a private, comfortable and relaxing getaway with a view that will keep you coming back. The main house has 3 bedrooms and sleeps 6 comfortably, while the detached studio apartment above the garage has a king size bed to accommodate 2 more.
The main house includes a kitchen with stainless steel appliances including refrigerator, electric stove and oven, dishwasher, microwave oven, coffee maker, toaster, a complete set of pots and pans and dishes. There is a counter, bar with stools so your guests may watch you cook while they sit and chat and a large dinner table that sits 6-8. Eat dinner with family and friends while enjoying the view of the mountains. After dinner sit in the living area while watching television, or unwind in front of the fireplace during a cold winter night, or get together with your family and friends for a board game night. Or if you prefer to barbeque outdoors on the porch and later gather around a 'campfire' for some story telling and toast marshmallows instead.
The laundry closet stores a full washer and dryer. All three rooms in the main house have sliding doors that lead out to the enclosed garden where you can relax and watch the kids play in the little playhouse.
We love to spend most of our 'free' time hiking, exploring and mountain biking. We frequently escape to our 'Utah' house with our two kids for peace and quiet, and to enjoy outdoor activities this area has to offer. We would love to share this experience with you too.
Nik purchased this house in 2011
We fell in love with the panoramic view of Zion NP and surrounding mountains during the day, and at night the sky is an endless blanket of stars.
Having lived in big cities all our lives, my husband and I love the peace and quiet this house offers and it's closeness to many National Parks.
We had a great stay at the Gooseberry Lodge. The house is beautiful with amazing views. The kitchen is well equipped with everything you'd need and the beds were comfortable. My only suggestion to renters is if you're visiting during a time where there might be rain or snow, opt for an all-wheel drive or four-wheel drive vehicle. The hill up to the house is steep and a our wheels spun in the rain. And, we were unable to get out of the driveway one day after about a foot of snow. All credit to the host though, who immediately called the care taker to come help.
The home was so beautiful and was furnished with everything we needed for our wonderful stay. The house is well laid out and so comfortable with a very workable kitchen and plenty of dining space. The views of the area mountains are fantastic. Also the drive to Zion was easy and to Bryce it took a bit longer but still doable. The house is located in a very quiet area. We had a great time and would like to return again sometime in the near future. Thanks for renting your lovely home.

The Gooseberry Mesa Lodge is perfect for a mountain bike vacation in Southern Utah and away from the crowds flocking to Zion. The home was comfortable for 6 guests and had everything we needed. The views from the property are spectacular. It's an easy drive to Hurricane to stock up on groceries and a convenience store close by for quick items. Highly recommend staying here if you plan to bike Gooseberry Mesa, Little Creek Mesa, the Jem Trail system, or the many other trails in the Hurricane/St. George area.
My first thought when Diane arranged for us to stay at Gooseberry Mesa Lodge in Apple Valley was how far it appeared to be from Zion National Park, the principal focus of our 3 night/4-day visit. When we arrived at the lodge, the scenery in almost every direction made me feel that 3 nights wasn't going to be enough to get the full experience the lodge had to offer. The breathtaking views were just a beginning. The interior of the home, with its southwestern décor, well-furnished kitchen, comfortable living room and bedrooms, and clean and spacious bathrooms, was like the proverbial icing on the cake. During our stay, we enjoyed the home and its surroundings and still found time to make trips to Zion, Kolob Canyon, and the town of Hurricane, where we found some very good and quite unique “eats” (Dixie Pizza Wagon and Main Street Café.) We highly recommend Gooseberry Mesa Lodge to anyone interested in a beautiful, southwestern Utah experience.
This is fantastic and well equiped house with all home comforts. Basic essentials in the fridge and larder for weary travellers and the house is close to good supermarkets. The views are to die for with Gooseberry Mesa and Zion changing colour at sunset and sunrise. It is close to Zion and lots of other great areas for hiking in the best of the Utah landscape. Great for outside living with seating areas in shade and sun and a good barbecue. Owners were helpful and informative. One of the best houses we have stayed in anywhere in the world!
Clean, comfortable, beautiful views! Best accommodations of any home I have ever rented. We arrived and Asked Nik what channel ESPN was to watch Monday Night Eagles Football and he said he didn't have ESPN and shortly after he made a call and we were able to watch the game!!
Loved this place!!
Gooseberry Mesa Lodge is a quiet, comfortable and relaxing getaway with panoramic views of Zion National Park, Gooseberry Mesa and the Smithsonian Butte. Far away from the crowd, you can watch wildlife from the porch, star gaze at night or build a fire and toast marshmallows with the kids.
This is a great location for family getaways and adventurers seeking a central base to explore the surrounding National Parks such as Zion, Bryce, North Rim of the Grand Canyon and Lake Powell, all within a day trip away. Many state parks and recreation areas are also close by. We are also within the immediate vicinity to world-class mountain biking trail systems such as Gooseberry Mesa, Little Creek Mesa and the JEM/Hurricane Rim Trails.
For the adventurous soul, head down the Smithsonian Butte Country Byway in your 4WD. Smithsonian Butte Back Country Byway is only 1.5 miles from the lodge and travels for 9 miles between Apple Valley on State Route 59 to Rockville on State Route 9. As the route winds down into the Valley of the Virgin River, you'll experience views of Zion Canyon, Canaan Mountain, the Vermillion Cliffs, and Zion National Park just four miles west. As you reach the highest points on the Byway, Zion's fiery landscaping, filled with buttes and temples, lays in panoramic glory at your feet.
