Arran and Barra are in a modern apartment development within very easy walking distance of the beach, shops, and restaurants. Within the development is a soft surface children play area with swings, a slide and other play equipment. The apartments are comprehensively equipped including a full range of kitchen equipment, bed linen and towels, with a small safe for the storage of valuables during your stay. The apartments are an ideal base for a golfing holiday playing Porto Santo Golfe which hosted the EURO PGA Madeira Open from 2009 to 2011.
Beach: There is much more to Porto Santo than its beach, but it is an impressive feature. Stretching over 5 miles along the south east coastline, from the port in the north, to Calheta in the South, the beach is one long strand of beautiful golden sands. Even during the summer months there is enough room for everyone, and you will always be able to find a quiet spot if that is your preference. The torquoise seas are shallow and safe for swimming. There are a number of beach bars and cafes dotted along the beach line for convenient refreshments.
Health Spas: The golden sands of Porto Santo have proven health benefits, and a number of hotels (all within 5 - 15 minutes walk from the apartment) have spas offering a wide range of health and well-being treatments, and which are open to non-residents. At the Thalassotherapy Centre at Vila Baleira Hotel you can enjoy seawater treatments in a variety of pools and tubs, and also a wide range of massage and beauty treatments. The Magic Garden Spa at the Pestana Porto Santo Hotel has a complete selection of facilities and treatments for your well being. The spa offers a sauna, steam bath, Turkish bath, power showers, jacuzzi and an indoor pool with a circuit of different jet streams, as well as a wide range of massages and exotic treatments. A new spa has just been completed at Hotel Porto Santo. As well as a full range of saunas, pools and a Turkish bath they also offer sand treatments involving full body submersion in baths of warmed therapeutic Porto Santo sand.
Flights: There are direct flights to Porto Santo from Gatwick and Manchester in the UK from May to October. There are also many flights from the UK to Madeira and up to 4 connecting flights from Madeira to Porto Santo each day. Easyjet offers daily flights from London Gatwick, and TAP and Thomson also fly from Gatwick. There are also several flights from regional airports, including Thomson from Glasgow, Manchester, Birmingham, Newcastle, East Midlands, Cardiff, Luton, Bournemouth and Exeter. Thomas Cook and First Choice also fly from Manchester, and Easyjet from Bristol. The flights from Madeira to Porto Santo (15 minutes) are operated by SATA. The Porto Santo Line also operates a daily passenger and car ferry (the Lobo Marinho) to and from Madeira. The passage time is approximately two and a half hours. The ferry usually leaves the port in Funchal, Madeira at 8am, and departs Porto Santo at 6pm for the return passage.
The apartment has been just what we needed - close enough to walk to almost everything on the island, even with two young children, and a play area just outside!
The rates include transfers between the airport or ferry port and the apartment at the start and end of your stay, and weekly cleaning visits with linen/towel changes.
This apartment was great. It had everything we needed and in the perfect location. Close to the beach, supermarket and restaurants.
The property was clean & tidy and well maintained, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to people.
Poto Santo is all about the beach, if you don't like the beach then don't go as there isn't much else to do.
We hope to return again next year.
The location was easy to find and really close to the sea. We didn't get any towels so that was a bit dissapointing. Also the couch was very dirty it needs to be replaced. Else the appartment was very clean and had a nice view. Porto santo is a very quiet island so we would recommend to stay there for no more than 1 week. The climate is great!
Although the listing description regarding the location, layout and facilties were excellent, the house was not properly cleaned when we arrived and there were no linen or towels. This situation was partly solved by the end of the 2nd day of our stay after some phone calls to the person in charge, which was very uncomfortable.
My family (two adults, two young children) stayed at the Barra apartment on Porto Santo in April 2010, and we had a lovely time.
We originally planned to stay for two weeks - until the Iceland volcanic ash crisis grounded all European flights, which meant we needed to stay a third week! But the owner/agent was very flexible and allowed us to book extra time at the last minute.
The location is great - close to the Zarco supermarket and accompanying shops / restaurants - including Bar Vista with its great pizza and ice creams! The island's small main town is a pleasant 20-minute walk away. The apartment looks across undeveloped land towards mountains - lovely views. And the play area is an excellent feature - used daily by our kids aged 3 and 6, watchable from our balcony.
The apartment is easily large enough for a four-person family; we cooked most days, as the kitchen is well equipped. The bedrooms are a good size and it's great to have two bathrooms. The terrace is spacious, and the main bedroom balcony is a nice touch too.
We visited Porto Santo during low season when there were fewer people around, and when certain attractions (eg sightseeing by boat) weren't available, so the island was quiet and we often had the (huge) beach to ourselves! We had many sunny days, and enjoyed dinner and barbecue outside on many occasions.
For families with young children, the lovely beach is the obvious main attraction. The town has a fantastic play area. There is horse riding at the Centro Hipico, afternoon bus tours that roam the whole island, and the mini Zoo (Quinta das Palmeiras) is also great for kids. The hotels out of town (Pestana, Vila Baleira) have good facilities and restaurants available for non-guests. We hired bikes and rode down to Calheta several times for the dramatic views - also up and down mountains to the island's rocky outskirts.
Finally, the island also has many nice cafes and restaurants, from friendly and affordable (Gel Burger, Apollo 14, Mercearia, Mar e Sol) to fancy and picturesque (O Calhetas, Pe Na Agua, Pestana) - all walkable from these apartments.
One last tip: Although the nearby Zarco is the island's largest supermarket, the Pingo Doce in town is sometimes better stocked - eg it had more fresh milk, meat and fish during our low-season visit. And I will miss the plentiful, tasty and affordable local 'Coral' beer - especially the dark 'Tonica') :-)
A really nice area to relaxe. In a few minutes you are on the beach, have a swim and relaxe again. Walking on the beach is very relaxing too. You can walk for hours. Try it.
If you need more crowded areas, take the ferry-boat and
This apartement was perfect for all: grill, cooking, quietness.
We visted Porto Santo this August with our 9 year old daughter. This is probably our 10th trip over the past 17 years. As my husband is from Madeira, we know the island quite well and have stayed in a variety of different accommodations over the years. I would say that this apartment probably is the most spacious we have stayed in and was very good value. The layout is good (nice to have the 2 storeys), the kitchen was well equipped, well maintained and clean and there were loads of towels etc. Having a large outside space was great and we had a barbecue one evening. The southwest facing patio gave us views of a couple of lovely sunsets however the late afternoon/evening sun was very intense.
The location of the apartment was ideal for us, as Espirito Santo is our favourite location, being within walking distance of the village (20 minutes) and Cahleta (an hours strole up the beach) and only 5 minutes walk from the beach and Henriques, our favourite daytime haunt. It is also just opposite Girassol bar, a proper locals bar where you can get fresh pastel da nata (excuse spelling) and good coffee.
The owners/agent were very flexible and were able to accommodate both an early arrival and late departure. We arrived at 11am and the apartment was ready and cleaned for us and on the day we left we were allowed to stay until 7pm to catch the evening boat, which we really appreciated.
However this area has now been developed and is still developing and has definitely lost some of its charm. this aside we were there in August and there were still stretches of beach which were almost deserted and the shoreline is still truly unspoilt and picturesque.
I am always hesitant to recommend restaurants in Porto Santo because in recent years they seem to change hands from one year to the next. However, Torres, a very simple, reasonable BBQ restaurant is established and has been good for a long time and Estrela du North was good this year especially for espetada, both in Camancha. Pe na Agua (?) on the beach is good but very popular and more expensive. But the real discovery was Villa Alencastra (?) opposite Zarco shopping centre which was excellent and good value as long as your not in a hurry as the service could be a bit disorganised. Within the same grounds is a newly opened, Brazilian run" tea room with absolutely "to die for" homemade cakes and a quaint atmosphere, and Moroccan style decor.
Porto Santo still remains a great getaway from it all location.
About 25 miles North East of Madeira, the island of Porto Santo is only about 8 miles long by 4 miles wide, and dominated by a 5 mile golden sandy beach along its south eastern coastline. Average daily temperatures range between 18 and 25 degrees Celsius, only occasionally dropping below 16 or 17 in the winter, or rising higher than 28 or 30 during the summer.
The apartment is located in a very convenient area with shops, bank, bars, restaurants, tennis club and the beach within 5 minutes walk. All of the many other facilities of Porto Santo are within easy reach, including the golf course which is a 20 minute walk or a 5 minute taxi ride away.
The main town of Vila Baleira offers shops, museums, churches and a small market, and is a leisurely 20 minute walk away, or an even more relaxing stroll along the beach. There are numerous walking opportunities around the island, with many interesting geological features to explore.
Other Activities: karting, health spas
Golf: The Porto Santo Golf Course, designed by Seve Ballesteros, was opened in 2004 and hosted the Madeira Open, a round of the European PGA Championship, from 2009 to 2011. The 18 hole course is a par 72, comprising six par 3's, six par 4's, and six par 5's, with championship, medal, yellow and ladies tees.
The first nine holes are American in style, with a number of lakes and other water features, and a stunning outlook over the south coast bay and beach. The back nine extends up to the high cliffs of the northern coastline and combines undulating fairways, typical of British links courses, with even more spectacular scenery.
Amongst the most impressive holes are the 13th, 14th and 15th, running along the cliff top and giving players magnificent views over the jagged shoreline far below.
The 14th is probably the course's signature hole. It is a dog leg right across the cliffs, with a tempting shot direct to the green for big hitters. Or perhaps it's the 10th, another par-5 where you may decide to manage the water hazards by playing a nine iron second shot before a long iron approach to the green.
As well as the championship course, there is a 9 hole par-3 course, a driving range, putting green, chipping area, and a magnificent clubhouse with a pro shop, bars, restaurant, jacuzzi and sauna facilities.
9 hole, 18 hole and multiple round tickets are available, as well as club, trolley and buggy hire.
