Overview

Photos and Description of this 10 bedroom holiday chateau / country house in Jonzac area - Chateau for holiday rental

large holiday home, walled garden, 25 mins sandy beaches, tennis courts nearby

This beautiful 19th century château is situated in the pretty village of Saint-Fort just 25 minutes from blue-flag sandy beaches. The village is surrounded by vineyards and the views from the roof terrace are amazing, especially at night when the Romanesque village church is illuminated. The village has a bar, bakers and general store, plus a twice-weekly market in the village square. The south-facing walled garden has: heated pool, hot tub, boules pitch, table tennis table, BBQ, outdoor table/chairs, plenty of place to sit in the sun or shade. Inside there is: kitchen, dining room, 2 living rooms (wifi, satellite TV, DVD player (selection of DVDs), CD/ipod player, bar billiard table), a library and a play station room with lots of games for children. In the cellar: table tennis, table football plus laundry room. First floor: 3 king-sized bedrooms, 2 twins plus 3 bathrooms. Second floor: one quadruple room with TV/video, 2 king-sized, 2 twins, 2 bathrooms. Tennis courts 2 mins.

The chateau is great for groups of friends or family wishing to holiday together. Last year our guests celebrated 40th and 80th birthdays, a 50th wedding anniversary and 25 year school reunion and there was a beautiful wedding too. This year we have a group of friends travelling out there with a French teacher for a week of sun, relaxing and language learning. It is a great house to relax in, with plenty of space: our favourite room is the library (stocked with over 4000 books) and our favourite place is the roof terrace for a glass of wine as the sun sets over the vineyards - you could be no where else but rural France. (Our kids, of course, prefer the heated pool and hot tub - it's difficult to get them out!) You can go wine and cognac tasting in the next village, cycle down to the port at Mortagne (5 miles) for a beer/pizza/fresh seafood by the boats, visit the Roman amphitheatre at Saintes, the charming medieval town of St Emilion and take a train round the vineyards, go into the centre of buzzing and cosmopolitan Bordeaux (which looks amazing after all the renovation work of the last ten years), visit La Rochelle and shop while the children are enthralled at the Aquarium and spend a few hours on the beaches at St Palais (our favourite), Royan, Saint Georges or Meschers (the beach cafe/restaurant at Plage de Suzac is excellent value) and before you know it the week is over and it's time to come home.

About Cathy Thomas

Huw and Cathy Thomas

Cathy Thomas purchased this chateau / country house in 2004

Why Cathy Thomas chose Jonzac area

We bought Chateau de la Place in 2004. We drove past it on holiday, saw it was for sale, thought wow! we'd love to own a place like that, came back to England, looked it up on the Internet, put in an offer and bought it! The first time we saw inside was after we had signed the papers! Not normally so crazy - but turns out to have been a very smart move. We spent the winter renovating and furnishing it ready for our first season in 2005 and have not looked back. We have spent many happy weeks there (including Christmas and New Year) - and are currently planning our daughter's 21st birthday out there.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

Character and space. This is a great house for a large group with something for everyone. We love the library, roof terrace and the dining room for large family meals. The kids love the heated pool, hot tub and table tennis in the cellar. Especially handy is the 2 minute walk to collect our warm croissants in the morning and the friendly family who run the local bar/restaurant and local coop supermarket.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you for your email, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay, as did our respective families. I can see why you and Huw fell in love with the place as soon as you saw it, it is a remarkable house.

There seemed to be something for everyone in the house, and is ideal for socialising or having a bit of space to oneself: I know my mother especially enjoyed the library and Hanna's family loved the garden; we had a couple of brave souls who took advantage of the swimming pool; and the table football table got a good workout from my siblings and uncle. The hot-tub was a big hit too. The travel cot was perfect and our daughter slept very well in there, she was most cosy indeed, not to mention happy at the amount of crawling space that was available throughout the house. Richard was very helpful and exceedingly welcoming on our arrival.

I cannot think of anything to be improved upon, unless you're able to make time go a little slower so we could have stayed longer...

A wonderful evocative chateau in true French style

  • 5 of 5

The description and pictures provide a good accurate representation of the property. We are a large multi-family group of 17 who have holidayed together at a number of locations and this has been one of the better ones. The kitchen is large enough and with cookware capable of serving a large group size. The large indoor and outdoor tables were spacious and enabled us to all eat together easily.

The four public sitting rooms and dining room meant there was usually plenty of space to find somewhere quiet to sit and read ,even with such a large group. The pool and garden area are spacious, private and quiet. The on-site manager introduced himself on the first day and made it clear we could call him with any questions or problems should we had any..... We didn't have any.

The property was clean and cool, even when temperatures reached 35dC, helped by tiled and wooden floors throughout .

The location within the small quiet village is ideal and allows a short walk to boulangerie, co-op and café/bar, for most day-to-day requirements. The area is also ideal for cycling and walking along quiet roads or along tracks across vinyards and fields. The nearby beaches are good with Mescher being our favourite. It is set in a cove with chalk cliffs behind a tree lined and white sandy beach, although the water is a bit muddy as it is at the mouth of the Gironde estuary. Came back with lots of inexpensive local wine purchased at local wineries where it is possible to taste and chat directly to the growers.

Would certainly recommend for large mixed or family groups who want to holiday together.

Fantastic Stay!!!

  • 5 of 5

We've just had the most fantastic new year stay at this 'chateau'. It was brilliant for our party with a mixture of adults and kids (aged 7 - 15) - the kids spent the whole time fully entertained with the table-tennis, bar billiards and hot tub - when we were there, we hardly saw them except for mealtimes- it was fab!

The property itself has so much charm and character; clean, well-equipped and plenty of space, and set in the middle of the village it was great to be able to wander out the front door and pick up the croissants for breakfast from the boulangerie, pop across the road to the cafe for a coffee or send the kids around the back to play football. Thre's plenty to do within a short drive too: we spent New Years Eve go-karting locally and New Year's Day playing beach cricket. Everyone in the party thought it had been an excellent choice for a New Year House Party and have said they'd love to come back again to enjoy it in the summer months.

Magnifique propriété ! Séjour enchanteur !

  • 5 of 5

We will come back ;-)

Car: recommended

The charming old village of Saint-Fort-sur-Gironde is surrounded by vineyards and country lanes - great for walking, cycling and birdwatching. Nearby are the historic towns of Saintes, Pons and Cognac. Slightly further afield (1 - 1.5 hours) are La Rochelle, St Emilion, Bordeaux and the Ile de Re. There is a huge choice of sandy beaches, from the small safe sandy coves (all with excellent beach cafes) at Meschers, northwards to the long stretches of fine sand at Saint Georges and Royan, and then further on to St Palais and the beaches of the Cote Sauvage (good for surfing). Lots for children - fantastic zoo at La Palmyre, go-karting, sailing locally at Port Maubert, boat trips and other water sports. Great local markets (we particularly like the ones at Cozes, Royan and Jonzac) and over 15 Michelin recommended restaurants within 20 miles. The village has a large sports field (football and cricket) and there are 2 tennis courts, a good bakers, friendly bar/cafe, chemist and supermarket.

Other Activities: Waterpark at Jonzac, Go-karting at Royan and St Genis, bird watching in the estuary (great in spring and autumn), sailing, kayaking, boating, cycling, sea fishing

Golf: Royan, lovely links course

Medoc Les Chateaux - best in Spring or Autumn

Golf du Cognac - smart

Saintes. Recommended with beautiful views and quite challenging,

Lacanau Ocean, Golf de L'Ardilouse over the estuary. Wonderful course. Excellent if challenging for higher handicappers

Golf de Pessac near Merignac

All the clubs have their own web pages.
