|Minimum Stay||3 - 7 nights|
Situated in an idyllic hamlet within the magical pine forest of La Brena, the views lead through the verdant landscape to the sea and the historic lighthouse of Trafalgar. Casa Margareta offers a very special experience. The tranquility of its natural surroundings makes it a great choice for that relaxing 'get away from it all' holiday, yet the summer 'buzz' of the beach is just 5 mins away. The living space is open plan and boasts a glass wall of four doors opening onto a large, shady patio, filling it with light and allowing the outside-in.The garden terrace made of rustic railway sleepers is great for sunbathing and the perfect place to sip those sundowners. Chill for sure, but we are also ideally located for an incredible variety of activities, culture and adventure. How about walking, horse riding or cycling in the forest; a day out to one of the many famous historical Andalusia villages/towns nearby; or a simple stroll down to Canos beach to take in the sublime view to Morocco across the water
Casa Margareta is unusual in the area, in that it offers the best in contemporary design, facilities and comfort in genuinely Arcadian surroundings. This Mediterranean Modern apartment is fueled by solar power, inspired by Corbusier and much cared for by its owner. The large airy open plan living/dining/kitchen area is stylishly furnished with a mix of the modern, vintage and ethnic,.This opens onto the covered terrace with a wood table and 4 chairs for outside dining and a fabulous L shaped outdoor sofa for relaxing, with lovely views to the pebble garden, the rural landscape and the sea beyond. The underfloor heating provided by solar panels ensures total comfort in winter and on chillier days.
The garden is very special.and one of the highlights of staying at Casa Margareta. It has been imaginatively landscaped with different sized pebbles, wooden posts and Mediterranean architectural planting. A large palm tree is the focus in one corner, leading the eye down towards the sea in the distance. All the neighbouring houses have large, rural gardens too, and so do not impinge on each other in any way. The surroundings are very green at all times of year , the pine forest always an inspiration, the bird and animal life always vital ( including cows with tinkling bells, allowed to roam the forest in the winter), and the light of the Costa de la Luz always happily reminding us of where we are - somewhere very exceptional.
As a photographer by profession and an artist by rote, building my own house in the most beautiful of surroundings proved in hindsight to be a venture that I was destined to realise. So now although I still live in London, enjoying everything a great city in Northern Europe has to offer, I am always thinking about and looking forward to the next time I can come back to my very own 'place in the sun' here in the most southerly part of Europe. And believe me in mid winter, when I come here from a normally grey and cold London, I am truly grateful for the consistent warmth and sun that greets me.
Miriam Reik purchased this apartment in 2005
I bought Casa Margareta when it was practically a ruin with a view to renovating it. Situated in a lovely little hamlet in a umbrella pine forest with views to the sea, the house itself wasn’t the greatest but the location was stunning and we all know that the winning formula is ‘ location location location’. I also knew I wouldn’t come across such a chance again within my budget. As happens with most building projects, nothing goes to plan and I ended up tearing down the house and building a totally new one. No regrets - just a typical story about a Brit building in Spain ! Seven years on and I still never fail to marvel at the loveliness of my house and its situation.
I'd always dreamt about that house in the sun. In 2005 after a trip to Mexico, I realised Spain could suit my purse as well as my recently discovered affinity for Spanish culture ,and was a practical flying distance from London. So deciding to take the plunge,I looked to the most undeveloped coast of Spain and came for the first time to the Costa de la Luz and Canos de Meca. I was not disappointed. The countryside is stunning ; virgin beaches stretching for miles; umbrella pine forests; protected natural parks. I love the historical context with Morocco across the water and the ubiquitous local white Moorish hilltop towns. The economy is still led by farming /fishing with the Andaluz character intact and with tourism having minimal impact on the environment. In summer the area is popular with tourists who are mainly Spanish and this inevitably gives rise to a very fun vibe. What is so great about Casa Margareta is that it benefits from its location all year round. In summer when the crowds do come, there is no stress in our little hamlet, and in winter if it is blustery or cooler down by the beach, more often than not because of our sheltered situation, all is peace and calm here at Casa M.
Casa Margareta is a modern well designed ground floor apartment with a lovely shaded front patio area which is large enough for dining. There are two double rooms and a kitchen living room as well as a modern bathroom. The owner lives above in a separate apartment but was not there during our stay.
It is in a small hamlet of houses which lies above Canos de Meca. It is a comfortable uphill walk from restaurants and the beach of about 30 minutes but is also accessible by car or bicycle. We particularly liked the relative seclusion. Brigitte who lives nearby was helpful and welcoming.
We had a fantastic stay at Casa Margareta ........ I would recommend it highly and will most definitely be going back !! The apartment is perfect with everything you could want from a comfortable bed, fabulous kitchen to the perfect sunbathing spot the list could go on. The apartment is very light and perfectly designed I found it hard to leave every day !!
Situated up in the forest the views were stunning and the walk to the beach just perfect. Further afield lots to see and do in the area including picturesque Vejer de la frontera and the great lunch spots along the paseo in Barbate or a choice of many fabulous untouched beaches ...... what more could you ask for ?
We had the most relaxing week in Miriam's house.
It is nice and cool in the middle of summer. Very functional, clean, good atmosphere. Forest around . the veranda is superb! Nice view over the sea.
Empty beaches you need to look and drive a little further for; that is really worth it!
Canos itself is not great, but Vejer de la Frontera is closeby.
Cadiz is not too far either and is great, we also liked Tarifa.
Many restaurants on the roads to the beaches and in Vejer, but eating at home on the veranda is just as great.
We will be back!
Casa Margareta was a very good choice. The apartment is very well equipped, it's clean, and it has a lovely garden and terrace. From the appartment you can easily walk to the village of Los Canos de Meca and enjoy the smell of the pine trees.
Los Canos is peaceful and has one of the most beautiful beaches you've ever seen. After a refreshing dive in the ocean, you can chill at the chiringuito on the beach. For gourmets there is a reasonable choice of restaurants in Canos, but a 10 minutes drive will get you to Conil and Barbate where you'll find restaurants where they serve delicious seafood.
There are many beautiful villages and towns nearby, such as Cadiz, Vejer de la Frontera and Medina Sidonia. All worth a visit.
We had an excellent stay and would love to come back to this oasis of rest.
The exceptional, immediate, natural surroundings of the pine forest boasts horse riding, cycling, lovely walks & great views. Beautiful and unspoilt spacious beaches are a 20 minute walk through the forest / 3 mins by car. Body, wind and kite surfing are available. In winter, lagoons form in the Trafalgar(Battle of) lighthouse area and in summer 'chiringuitos' - wooden built bars occupy a temporary space to help make your beach experience more fun. The local village of Los Canos de Meca with its hippy chic restaurants, bars and shops is known as a trendy summer hot spot despite its small, off the beaten track, location. The nearest town is Barbate, a typical Spanish fishing pueblo of strong Andalusian character with a great daily market -10 mins by car. Vejer, a beautiful hilltop white Moorish village with excellent restaurants -15 mins by car. Montenmedio-international golf course -15 mins drive. Historic towns of Cadiz, Jerez, Seville,Tangiers,Tarifa, El Puerto are all within easy reach.
Other Activities: kite-surfing, trekking, yoga, flamenco
