Fab modern peaceful garden apartment in natural park -Sea views -Lovely terraces

Bedrooms 2
Space 861 sq. ft.
Property type apartment
Minimum Stay 1 - 5 nights

About the property

2 bed apartment with lovely garden/terraces with sea views in tranquil location.

Situated in an idyllic hamlet within the magical pine forest of La Brena behind the village of Los Canos de Meca, the views lead through the verdant landscape to the sea and the historic lighthouse of Trafalgar. Casa Margareta offers a very special experience. The tranquility of its natural surroundings makes it a great choice for that relaxing 'get away from it all' holiday, yet the summer 'buzz' of the beach is just 5 mins away. The living space is open plan and boasts a glass wall of four doors opening onto a large, shady patio, filling it with light and allowing the outside-in.The garden terrace made of rustic railway sleepers is great for sunbathing and the perfect place to sip those sundowners. Chill for sure, but we are also ideally located for an incredible variety of activities, culture and adventure. How about walking, horse riding or cycling in the forest; a day out to one of the many famous historical Andalusia villages/towns nearby; or a simple stroll down to Canos beach to take in the sublime view to Morocco across the water

Casa Margareta is unusual in the area, in that it offers the best in contemporary design, modern facilities and comfort in genuinely Arcadian surroundings. This Mediterranean Modern apartment is fueled by solar power, inspired by Corbusier and much cared for by its owner. The large airy open plan living/dining/kitchen area is stylishly furnished with a mix of the modern, vintage and ethnic,.This opens onto the shady covered terrace with a wooden table and 4 chairs for outside dining, and a fabulous L shaped outdoor sofa for relaxing. There are lovely views to the pebble garden, the rural landscape and the sea beyond. The underfloor heating provided by solar panels ensures total comfort in winter and on chillier days.

The garden is very special.and one of the highlights of staying at Casa Margareta. It has been imaginatively landscaped with different sized pebbles, wooden posts and Mediterranean architectural planting. A large palm tree is the focus in one corner, leading the eye down towards the sea in the distance. All the neighbouring houses have large, rural gardens too, and so do not impinge on each other in any way. The surroundings are very green at all times of year , the pine forest always an inspiration, the bird and animal life always vital ( including cows with tinkling bells, allowed to roam the forest in the winter), and the light of the Costa de la Luz always happily reminding us of where we are - somewhere very exceptional.

About Miriam Reik

As a photographer by profession and an artist by rote, building my own house in the most beautiful of surroundings proved in hindsight to be a venture that I was destined to realise. So now although I still live in London, enjoying everything a great city in Northern Europe has to offer, I am always thinking about and looking forward to the next time I can come back to my very own 'place in the sun' here in the most southerly part of Europe. And believe me in mid winter, when I come here from a grey and cold London, I am truly grateful for the consistent warmth and sun that greet me.

Miriam Reik purchased this apartment in 2005

Why Miriam Reik chose Barbate

I bought Casa Margareta when it was practically a ruin with a view to renovating it. Situated in a lovely little hamlet in a umbrella pine forest with views to the sea, the house itself wasn’t the greatest - but the location was stunning and we all know that the winning formula is ‘ location location location’. I also knew I wouldn’t come across such a chance again within my budget. As happens with most building projects, nothing goes to plan and I ended up tearing down the house and building a totally new one. No regrets - just a typical story about a Brit building in Spain ! Nine years on and I still never fail to marvel at the loveliness of my house and its situation.

What makes this apartment unique

I'd always dreamt about that house in the sun. In 2005 after a trip to Mexico, I realised Spain could suit my purse as well as my recently discovered affinity for Spanish culture, and was a comfortable flying distance from London. So deciding to take the plunge, I looked to the most undeveloped coast of Spain and came for the first time to the Costa de la Luz and Canos de Meca. I was not disappointed. The countryside is stunning ; virgin beaches stretching for miles; umbrella pine forests; protected natural parks. I love the historical context with Morocco across the water and the ubiquitous local white Moorish hilltop towns. The economy is still led by farming /fishing with the Andaluz character intact and tourism still having minimal impact on the environment. In summer the area is popular with mainly Spanish tourists and so inevitably gives rise to a very fun overall vibe. What is so great about Casa Margareta is that it benefits from its location all year round. In summer when the crowds do come, there is no stress in our little hamlet, and in winter if it is blustery or cooler down by the beach, more often than not because of our sheltered situation, all is peace and calm here at Casa M.

Enjoyed the property location

  • 3 of 5

Location suited our requirements. Some items in property could do with upgrade (main mattress and tv) and some additional kitchen items (microwave/oven trays). Given the weather / time of year more time was spent indoors. Local Rep was excellent.

Owner's Response: Thank you Douglas for your observations and commiseration for the bad weather you unfortunately had. February / March can be a bit of a gamble weather wise, but definitely not as cold as Northern Europe ! So we now have a wonderful new smart tv and the mattress is actually only one year old, so perhaps it just didn’t work for you. Re your comment on a microwave, I will ask other clients if it could prove to be a popular addition to the facilities. Great you enjoyed Casa Margareta’s unique location and that Brigitte did her job well. Miriam

oasis between the pines and the beach

  • 5 of 5

Casa Margareta is a beautiful holiday destination. The apartment is spacious, well equipped and has been furnished in a very thoughtful way, but the real bonus is the way the inside flows into a big covered terrace and garden. For a two bed apartmentn the use of all this area is such luxury. The Casa is set on the edge of pine woods, perfect for wandering. You feel like you are in the middle of the country and yet it is a 5 minute drive to the beach. The area is stunning and not overdeveloped. If you want to drag yourself away from the relaxed atmosphere of the La Cañada there is such a variety of places within an hours' drive. Miriam the owner and Brigitte the caretaker were really charming and very helpful. We had a great time and hope to return.

Perfect Vacation

  • 5 of 5

Unique atmosphere

  • 5 of 5

After one week spent in Casa Margareta, I have to appreciate the unique atmosphere of this place, situated "far away from madding crowd" of Los Canos. The house is hidden with few other houses in the middle of pine forrest, which is really magical, especially when the sun is going down. In this corner of Spain the simple and functional design of the house itself looks like from the distant planet. The comfortable and modern equiped interior naturally passes to the open air terrace, well protected from the sun, continuing by lovely garden, where every plant's position was chosen with the great sense for visual impression. We were also charmed by the surroundings from unspoiled horizon stretching beaches of Cape Trafalgar and sand dune of Bologna beach to the picturesque pueblo blanco Vejer de la Frontera and Cadiz with its caribbean feel and authentic fish market.

Many thanks to Brigitte, who takes care of our comfort and was able to quickly solve everything we needed.

Away from it all

  • 5 of 5

Casa Margareta is a modern well designed ground floor apartment with a lovely shaded front patio area which is large enough for dining. There are two double rooms and a kitchen living room as well as a modern bathroom. The owner lives above in a separate apartment but was not there during our stay.

It is in a small hamlet of houses which lies above Canos de Meca. It is a comfortable uphill walk from restaurants and the beach of about 30 minutes but is also accessible by car or bicycle. We particularly liked the relative seclusion. Brigitte who lives nearby was helpful and welcoming.

We found paradise at Casa Margareta

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic stay at Casa Margareta ........ I would recommend it highly and will most definitely be going back !! The apartment is perfect with everything you could want from a comfortable bed, fabulous kitchen to the perfect sunbathing spot the list could go on. The apartment is very light and perfectly designed I found it hard to leave every day !!

Situated up in the forest the views were stunning and the walk to the beach just perfect. Further afield lots to see and do in the area including picturesque Vejer de la frontera and the great lunch spots along the paseo in Barbate or a choice of many fabulous untouched beaches ...... what more could you ask for ?

The exceptional, immediate, natural surroundings of the pine forest boasts horse riding, cycling, lovely walks & great views. Beautiful and unspoilt spacious beaches are a 20 minute walk through the forest / 3 mins by car. Body, wind and kite surfing are available. In winter, lagoons form in the Trafalgar(Battle of) lighthouse area and in summer 'chiringuitos' - wooden built bars occupy a temporary space to help make your beach experience more fun. The local village of Los Canos de Meca with its hippy chic restaurants, bars and shops is known as a trendy summer hot spot despite its small, off the beaten track, location. The nearest town is Barbate, a typical Spanish fishing pueblo of strong Andalusian character with a great daily market -10 mins by car. Vejer, a beautiful hilltop white Moorish village with excellent restaurants -15 mins by car. Montenmedio -international golf course, equestrian centre and sculpture park -15 mins drive. Historic towns of Cadiz, Jerez, Seville,Tarifa, El Puerto,Sanlucar, are all within easy reach. Whale and dolphin watching a fantastic experience , available from Tarifa. Tangiers and Morocco are just 2 hours travel, door to door.

Other Activities: Paragliding, trekking, cycling, yoga on the beach, flamenco.
