Florence Metropolitan Area Chateau-Country House "Torre Estate": Photos and Description

This is really a unique, beautiful Estate (for privacy and security reasons, name will be fully disclosed upon completion of the reservation), in an excellent location to take day tours to Tuscany and Florence. Total privacy. The Tower itself was originally a watchtower dated to the medieval period, XIII Century, Florentine Republic, situated in a unique dominant and panoramic position, on the hills East-South East of Florence, on the Northern edge of the Chianti Region (denomination DOC Chianti Rufina), with a wide open view over the Florentine and Chianti hills. At only 15 km from the heart of Florence and ~2 km from a quaint village with stores, bank, post office and cafes. At 5 kilometers from the train station (free parking) from which frequent trains take you downtown, to the very heart of Florence, in ~ 25 minutes for 2-3 EUR. And at 10 km from Highways to Rome (therefore within easy reach of all major Tuscany world-renowned artistic and gastronomic centers), to Milan, to Venice and to the Mediterranean Sea . Obviously with immediate access to the Chianti Region picturesque roads.

Siena, Arezzo, Montepulciano, etc., all the Tuscan Classics are within easy reach

A 15-20 pages WELCOME DOCUMENT full of information about the Property but also on how to organize your trip, airports, car rentals, currency, tours, etc. will be sent upon completion of the reservation. This is a precious source of information, built on the basis of my observations and those of Travelers like you, to avoid mishaps, confusions, misconceptions and costly unpleasant surprises!

The Torre Estate is at an elevation of ~200 meters, ~600 ft. That elevation, ventilation and 3 ft thick white granite walls maintain what most find a comfortable temperature during the Summer.

The Torre proper and successive additions encompass ~420 sq meters of living space (~4200 sq ft) over ~4.5 hectares (~11 acres) of land: woodland, terraced olive trees, gardens, terraces, balconies, tenuous trails and yards.

Approximately 220 sq meters (~2200 sq ft) constitute the Master Quarters ("la Casa Padronale"), herein described and depicted. They have been renovated, are in great conditions, up to code and feature many characteristics of the traditional Tuscan architecture. They encompass the East and South additions and the ground floor of the Tower itself (refer to the Listing pictures). The other two entirely independent areas, the Guest Quarters ("Il Fienile") and the Tower itself ("La Torre") are not rented at present. HENCE, WE MAY EASILY ACCOMMODATE FIVE, SIX, EIGHT+ GUESTS.

The Torre Estate is reached via a ~200 meters private dirt road from via della Torre, embedded in Mediterranean vegetation. Yards, stone terraces, balconies, flowers as well as herbs gardens (you are welcome to both), fruit trees and 160 terraced mature olive trees complete the scenario. Approximately 4000 sq meters (~40,000 sq ft) of the land around the Tower complex itself are fenced. The front area of the Master Quarters themselves and the East Terraces, are independently fenced. The Guest Quarters ("il Fienile") on the West side of the Tower are further fenced and have their independent entrance, yard and terraces.

Presence of pets will be considered, let's discuss it - First priority is to maintain the habitable space itself free of allergens, particles and odors so as to give due consideration to travelers with allergies, etc.

In summary, so as to living space, the complex is articulated over three independent Quarters, the Master Quarters ("la Casa Padronale"), the Guest Quarters ("il Fienile") and the Tower itself ("la Torre"). This Listing refers to the Master Quarters (~220 square meters), the one we are discussing here. For larger parties extra guests may be hosted in the Master Quarters themselves (by deploying sofa beds) or in the vacant Guest Quarters ("il Fienile"), for an extra per-diem charge.

Master Quarters ("la Casa Padronale"): As we said, they encompass the entire ground floor of the Tower plus the South and East additions. They consist of two independent Suites (the Master Suite and the Guests Suite) each with a bathroom-en-suite. The Master Suite has independent entrances over the North and the East Terraces as well as an independent balcony. Living room and formal dining room with large panoramic windows and exits towards the South terrace and the greenhouse, a fireplace, a really fully equipped kitchen with gas burners, a day area with table, chairs and a sofa, the greenhouse (with wet bar, table and chairs) and terraces on the East, South and North sides of the complex complete this rather unique layout.

For completeness of the record, a word about "il Fienile" and "la Torre" spaces.

"il Fienile": Approximately 80 sq meters, on the ground floor of the West side addition, with an independent entrance, terrace and yard. Originally used by staff or guests, it consists of a charming living/dining room area with fireplace and library, kitchen, bathroom and large lofted bedroom.

“la Torre": it is the third independent Quarter with independent entrance to the second floor of the tower structure itself through an exterior stairway. Over approximately 120 sq. meters, it comprises a monumental dining room with fireplace, kitchen, bedroom with bathroom-en-suite, plus a guest bathroom at the entry level (second floor of the Tower itself). On the second level (third floor of the Tower), there is an open space of ~50 square meters (~500 square feet) used as study, living room, bedroom or all of the above. From this level a stairway leads to the terrace of the Tower (fourth floor of the Tower), with absolutely astounding panoramic views of the Chianti-Florentine Hills.

LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) with meter. Hence your gas consumption may be monitored "by you" and will be billed at cost. This consumption is typically nominal/minimal for hot water heating and moderate for heating in the cooler winter months (we are talking about a Mediterranean winter season). No electric heaters allowed.

Water comes from two wells, fed by a spring water source within the property, up the hill, delivery powered by autoclave.

Mineral water is available free of charge 24/7 at a fountain in the Village - sparkling water at 0.15 EUR/liter !

Looking forward to share the Torre Estate with you!

About Gil

I am a hard working professional, multicultural multilingual experienced traveler and sailor.

The profession and in general Life are full of challenges and tension. In my mind this property catalyzes peace and introspection, excellent karma if i may dare to say.

Gil purchased this chateau / country house in 2016

Why Gil chose Pontassieve

In a few words,

Florence with all its museums, churches, shopping, restaurants, services, attractions,

Chianti Region,

all major touristic attractions of Tuscany, e.g., Siena, Montepulciano, San Sepolcro,

charme, uniqueness, space, land, environment,

proximity to train/highway/air links.

More explicitly, the Estate represents the "best of both worlds", the beauty and peace of the Chianti hillsides and the metro/artistic/alive ambiance of Florence.

The property is 15 km from downtown Florence, in the Northern Hills of the Chianti Region with stunning views of the Tuscan hills and the Arno River Valley, hence wonderful evenings on one of the terraced spaces or balconies, sipping Chianti wine over cheeses, breads, prosciutto, salame, bresaola, etc., a myriad of items from the Tuscan culinary tradition, excellent crusty breads, all bought at the local Coop store, in the Village one kilometer away. Or in one of the many wineries of the Chianti region.

And another day or evening, a more metropolitan, "cultural", urban experience in Florence, downtown Florence a gunshot away, less than ~15 km, excellent train connection as well, railway station at 3 kilometers with free parking space. Visiting museums, shopping, a gourmet meal after an aperitif in world renowned bars and restaurants.

That much for location, a duality if you will, to pick and choose one of the faces of the properties depending on your mood and desire.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

A Chianti, Tuscan Hills experience at its fullest. Yet 15 km from Florence, 25 km from Florence Airport or 20 minutes train ride to downtown Florence. 3 hours drive to Rome, 2 hours drive to Bologna and to the Mediterranean Sea, 1 hour drive to Bilancino Lake.

A multi-faceted experience, or one only depending on your desire. A country-life experience in the Tuscan Hills, or a tranquil base for day trips to Florence and Chianti wineries.

Karen and I are truly enjoying our stay at Torre Casalta and its large apartment. From the well-appointed kitchen to the dining room and living room with fireplace, both with great window views, to the patios on all sides, this rental serves as a tranquil sanctuary while simultaneously being a well-located base for daily excursions to Florence (15 minutes away by local train) and throughout Tuscany.

Torre Casalta is only a kilometer or so away from the town of Molino del Piano for shopping, a few miles from the cities of Sieci and Pontessieve for access to great food co-ops, and close-by a large selection of great restaurants and wineries. We highly recommend a stay at this wonderful place.

Beautiful getaway farmhouse as advertised

  • 5 of 5

The pictures are accurate but don't even begin to describe how wonderful this farmhouse is. It is located down a one lane road 10 minutes from a beautiful small Italian village. It is so nice to have the space of a home with lots of living area, great kitchen and two master bedrooms with baths so everyone has privacy and space.

We took day trips to Montepulciano, Siena, Cinque Terre and Lucca. Chose to spend two days local visiting wineries and local villages. Be prepared for driving in the hills on narrow and windy roads to go to wonderful local restaurants and wineries.

Gil (the owner) is super responsive and stayed in touch with us throughout our stay. He was so good at recommending restaurants and helped us get adjusted to the area. There are markets close by in the villages which had everything we needed for our stay. The resident cat was a bonus for my daughter and I which made us feel at home.

It is easy to feel connected in a personal way to this farmhouse. I would highly recommend staying here to those that want to get away and experience the Italian village community.

Owner's Response: Dear Christi Needles to say thks for your kind words and for having allowed us to give you and your daughter such a nice experience. You make me want to be there more often! Needless to say it has been a real pleasure to get to know both of you a bit, albeit by e-mail & phone conversations. I must say the “outside cat”, Esmeralda as she has been baptized by a recent guest, Grace S., is indeed an “outside cat”. She has been neutered and vaccinated, she was born in the property and I inherited from the previous owner, architect in Florence, that would not keep her inside! So Mauro, the groundskeeper, comes up and attends to her every other day. She has her little setup in the firewood shed and though many have asked to adopt her we decided that she is to accustomed to be outside in that terrain to really get used to become a happy house cat. This in spite of her friendliness! So as to my availability is a bit the pleasure of hosting, of sharing, the property and as you say very appropriately, Florence, the Chianti region, Tuscany and its way of life! Again, Christi, a real pleasure to have hosted you in the Torre Estate Happy sailing and perhaps we will get a chance to meet should our paths cross at the Torre. Be well and success in your field of endeavors!

Like something out of a Fairy Tale

  • 5 of 5

Gil and his team were very gracious and kind hosts. They provided great information for us prior to and during our stay. They genuinely cared for us and made us feel welcome.

We spent six nights here and could not believe how wonderful it was. We were looking for a private spot to really enjoy the countryside and take in the beauty of the region; this was it and so much more. We picked grapes and apples right outside our door to enjoy with our breakfasts and looked out over the hills as we sipped espressos without a care in the world. Our hope was to take in many of the sights but this place just kept beckoning us to stay and soak up the tranquility so we did miss a few of the typical attractions of the area. Oh well, we'll just have to plan to stay longer next time.

Medieval Tuscan watch tower with great views

  • 5 of 5

We very much enjoyed our stay at La Torre in the Tuscan hills. The building is a secluded medieval watch tower with beautiful views of wooded hills, a short drive on a dirt road to a small village with all the necessities. It has been fully restored and updated with modern appliances, and was clean and well-maintained. The staff was very friendly and helpful and gave us extensive local advice. The kitchen was fully equipped and it was a pleasure to cook several Tuscan inspired meals using fresh local ingredients paired with regional wines. We did excursions to Greve in Chianti, Siena, and San Gimignano, but we would love to come back and spend more time just relaxing and enjoying the great views and peaceful setting. We would highly recommend this property.

Idealne miejsce na wypoczynek z dala od cywilizacji wśród pięknej toskańskiej przyrody.

  • 5 of 5

Samotna warownia położona na wzgórzu. Spokojne miejsce, wokół piękna przyroda i niesamowite widoki. Najbliższe miasteczko oddalone o ponad 2 km (i prawie 200 m niżej). Idealne warunki do spokojnego wypoczynku.

Mimo oddalenia od cywilizacji w przypadku jakichkolwiek problemów (awaria prądu, brak wody itp) można liczyć na szybką i profesjonalną pomoc.

Chętnie tu wrócimy.

Our most unique and relaxing VRBO experience to date!

  • 5 of 5

The tower at Pontesieve was by far the most "unique" of our many VRBO selections. Our stay was everything we thought it would be and more. It does not disappoint. The "tower" is situated to take full advantage of the beautiful Tuscan scenery. Rolling green hills of virgin forest provided a backdrop for the property's olive groves, fruit trees and grape vines, which surround the tower and invite guests to explore or sit back on one of the many terraces and enjoy with a glass of local Chianti (which we did). The facility itself provides a balance of modern conveniences in a rustic setting. The space is really large, clean and includes all the necessary household items and supplies, including decent wifi ( a pleasant surprise). The washing machine was also greatly appreciated as well as the fully stocked kitchen complete with local olive oil (fabulous!) The tower comes with a friendly cat that "guards" the grounds outside (Her name is Esmeralda) who will escort you to the door and is always ready for a tummy rub.

The location is ideal as a base to explore Tuscany, all the attractions were within a hour and half drive, and the train ride into Florence at the Sieci station was less than 20 minutes. We recommend renting a car to get to the station and destinations unless you're into hiking the hills.

We were happy to be at the tower at the same time as our host, Gilberto. He was tirelessly helpful with suggestions on restaurants and very knowledgeable about the area. We had an excellent BBQ alfresco with Gil under the Tuscan stars! Best experience in Italy...thanks again Gil...we hope our paths cross again at "your castle".

Beautiful, quiet, private, relaxing stay on Tuscany hillside

  • 5 of 5

Our family of four stayed here for a week in July, and it was absolutely lovely. Especially after spending our first week in busy, crowded, bustling Rome. The tower sits on top of a hill--accessible by driving up a long winding road past stunning vineyards and olive trees. My daughter's favorite part of our stay was the sweet cat that lives on the property--the sweetest, friendliest cat we have ever met. The owner (Gil) was wonderfully kind, intelligent, responsive, and helpful. He gave us so much helpful information (from how to book train tickets into Florence, to renting a car, and answering any and all questions we had). During our stay here, we took day trips to Venice, Cinque Terre, as well as touring nearby castles. If you are looking for a private, peaceful, rustic stay in a medieval tower, on top of a hill in Tuscany, surrounded by butterflies, flowers, fruit trees, olive trees and vineyards--this is the perfect place. Thank you Gil.

Owner's Response: Dear Trinh a pleasure to have you and an unusual one I must say to meet personally the four of you, something that happens very rarely - it was fun to assist you even though by email in your Tuscan journey (July 8th - July 15th 2018) We do thank you for your kind words and we are really happy that your stay at the Torre Casalta and in Tuscany was a pleasant one. The super-friendly kitten lives outside as you have seen - she belonged to the Florentine architects previous owners that could not take her with them in Florence, not enough garden for this outside kitten ! As i have done in the past with one of the guests I met personally, please let me know if your travel plans bring you back to Italy and consider yourself and your family invited to stay a couple of days in Torre Casalta as my guests should our dates coincide Until then happy sailing in a starry sky! Ciao! Gilberto & Bruno, Mauro, Margherita and Karolina

The Tower itself, "la Torre" dates to 1255 AD. Indeed it has a name, we will disclose it privately upon completion of the reservation, so as to allow you to refer to your history books!).

The complex consists of three independent Quarters, only one is being rented, the "Casa Padronale" (Master Quarters). HENCE EXTRA GUESTS MAY BE EASILY ACCOMMODATED (see below). The Master Quarters ("la Casa Padronale") spans over ~220 sq. meters (~2200 sq. feet) with two independent Suites each with bathroom-en-suite configuration. The Estate itself encompasses ~4.5 hectares (~11 acres) of land.

The property is on the hills of the Arno River, East-South East of Florence, Northern edge of the Chianti Region ("DOC Chianti Rufina"). Originally, in the XIII Century, a Watchtower. It has the beauty of those hills, with olive, oak, cypress, pine trees and a stunning view of the Chianti Region to miles and miles away. And it is 15 km from Florence.

The Torre Estate allows to experience the life of a "Tuscan chateau", firewood places, home cooked dinners, relaxing in the yard and terraces sipping Chianti wine, or walking or hiking in the property and enjoying beautiful sunsets. And all of this, a gunshot from Florence!

Not to mention the many little restaurants, osterias, trattorias within a 5 kms radius, with typical Tuscan Cuisine, at extremely reasonable prices. Further, the property being as it is on the Northern edge of the Chianti Region, puts some of the most prestigious wineries well within reach and allows for unique day trips, tours, excursions and wine shopping.

Or a visit to one of the most famous outlet shopping mall, the "Mall" in via Europa 8, Leccio - a half-hour drive or so to indulge in brand-names shopping, e.g., Giorgio Armani, Brioni, Balenciaga, Burberry, Dolce&Gabbana, Fendi, Gucci, Pomellato, Pucci, Saint Laurent, Valentino & Zegna -the whole "Gucci Pucci Fiorucci" gamma!

Alternatively, the “Torre Estate” experience may be taken as a "trip to Florence", without its congestion, traffic and cost. A 5 kilometers easy drive to the railway train station, with ample free parking, will get you in ~20-30 minutes by (frequent) train ride to the downtown Florence Train Station, ~2-3 EUR fare. Spend the day in Florence, with all it has to offer in terms of its arts, performances, museums, shopping, sightseeing, tours, boutiques, restaurants and then back to the Torre after or for dinner. Or drive to Florence, ~10 miles (~15 km) by car.

In conclusion, you may experience a mix of the beauty of the Tuscan Hills and the City of Florence in its splendor. It will make for a memorable vacation.

The complex consists of the Torre proper and its two additions. It develops over three independent Quarters, hence EXTRA GUESTS MAY BE EASILY ACCOMODATED for an extra per-diem fee.

The Master Quarters ("la Casa Padronale") consist of two independent Suites each with its own bathroom, (two sofa-beds for three extra guests may be deployed, extra charge as per Listing), living room, formal dining room, fully equipped kitchen, day room sofa' and table/chairs, greenhouse (Jardin d'Hiver) with wet bar and table/chairs, over an area of ~2200 sq ft (~220 sq meters). Completed by panoramic views, many terraces and balconies, outside table and chairs, fireplace, grill, washing machine, internet-WiFi, TV and much more.

The Guest Quarters ("il Fienile") consist of a bedroom, bathroom, living/dining room with fireplace and kitchen, over an area of ~ 800+ sq ft (~80+ sq meters). We may discuss if interested its rental as well.

Finally the Tower itself ("la Torre"), extending over two floors, second and third floors of the construction itself, plus the terrace at the top, kitchen, dining room, fireplace, bedroom suite with bathroom-en-suite and an extra bathroom for guests on one level, large open space living/bed room on the second level, terrace on the third level, over an area of ~1200 sq feet (~120 sq meters), not available as a rental at present.

If this property and its location so far attract you and you are considering a stay, feel free to contact me with any questions, clarifications or concerns – we are proud of the Estate and we are happy to share it and discuss it with others.
