This is our escape from London's hectic lifestyle. The house is stylishly and comfortably furnished making it the prefect base in the Cotswolds for the leisurely stay. The big plus is that there is an Artspa at your doorstep, when it's too wet for walks we can enjoy a swim in the warm pool. The 450 acre nature reserve is always there for you to explore and enjoy.

What makes this house unique

Cosy luxurious lakeside house with Spa facilities wihtin a 450 acre nature reserve. In winter we arrive to a log fire, a lake view and a heated pool at the Artspa and and in the summer, the Estate provides us with the perfect base to enjoy all that Cotswolds has to offer. Beautiful views

Overall we were not disappointed with this property. A few things let it down. The microwave was filthy and had clearly been missed in the otherwise thorough clean. There were only 5 mugs - and 6 of us. I let the owner know and received an apology but this didn't solve the problem for us! We bought some cheap ones and left them for the next people. There were some chipped items of crockery and not enough wine or soft drink glasses. We made do with the small tumblers. The equipment was OK but could do with an upgrade. We had a problem with the washer/drier which I reported to the owner. Our stay was over Xmas and the owner provided a decorated Xmas tree. Much appreciated. We had some fantastic weather, so fully appreciated the lovely views and sunsets and on the foggy days it was different but equally lovely. The swimming pool was a great hit. We didn't try the spa as it seemed very expensive. I really liked the location - not too far to walk to the pool. The wifi was great but I couldn't get service from virginmedia. The log burner was good and although the central heating was fine it was a bonus for us. As it was cold we were able to use the deck as a second fridge for drinks and store things in a cold bag. We had a lovely time overall.

review of mere hide, easter 2011

  • 5 of 5

we enjoyed a fantastic stay at mere hide. our second time to lower mill estate, and we carefully looked for a rental this time that was really well positioned with full access to all the facilities.

mere hide was a real find, smart and well maintained, with everything we needed in the kitchen. our older children loved the bunk beds, and although the bedrooms arent huge there was lots of space for us all downstairs. the decked balconies are great, child friendly, and as we had amazing weather, great for sunbathing.

as the house faces west we got wonderful sun throughout the afternoon and great sunsets. there is still building work going on opposite the house but even with this i still think mere hide has one of the best positions and outlooks on the estate.

the facilities at lower mill are fantastic, warm indoor and outdoor pools with immaculate, child friendly, changing rooms. great outdoor play areas, and so much space for our older girls to ride their bikes.

there is so much to do nearby, butts farm and the waterbeach park both made superb days out.

overall a fantastic holiday rental, going away with 3 small children is not easy but mere hide really makes it stress-free!

we will definately return!

Lower Mill Estate is in the Cotswold Water Park (South Cotswolds) , a great base for exploring all the Cotswolds towns (Cirencester, Tetbury). The source of the Thames is 4 miles away (Kemble). The Thames Path has many lovely walks along its 180 mile journey to the sea.

The Cotswolds are steeped in history from the Roman times and there are some beautiful historic houses and estates to explore: Chedworth Roman Villa, Dyrham Park, Sudeley Castle.

There are over 100 lakes in the area, some are kept as nature reserves but many are used for fishing, kayaking, sailing, water skiing and windsurfing. Golf, bicycle hire and horse-riding are also just a few minutes drive from the house.

Bakers Arms pub is within walking distance and there are a number of other good pubs in the area that are all child-friendly.

For animal lovers - Butts Farm and the Cotswold Wildlife Park.

Pool - no children 8-10am + last hour.

Other Activities: bird watching, walks in nature reserve

Golf: South Cerney golf course.
