About Shawn Smith
Hi: I grew up near Detroit and made a temporary move to the Spider Lake/Traverse City area to take some classes at Northwestern Michigan College in the winter of 1991. Upon waking, my second morning in February, I was lying in bed on the second floor looking out the window half asleep. All was white when a black squirrel was spotted down and about thirty feet away bounding across a split rail fence. The fence had about six inches of fresh snow and each time the squirrel would jump it would knock some snow off the fence to the ground. The morning was still except for this black squirrel on a pure white landscape. It was like a living painting. I watched this for about thirty seconds and realized at this moment that this is where I belonged. And, here I am today sharing my good fortune with others looking for that special getaway.
Shawn Smith purchased this Cabin in 2000
Why Shawn Smith chose Traverse City
Why this Property? Because you get a cabin at an affordable price, on a very nice piece of property with great views not to far from Traverse City, the Sleeping Bear Dunes, wineries, casinos, small towns, shopping and so much more. Plus, and maybe the most important thing to me is the sandy lake bottom and you can swim right out front!! There are Beautiful and breathtaking views.

Great views, great location, and "throwback decor"
Great, relaxing vacation. Plenty of activities to do nearby or able to just relax at the lake. Cabin provided 2 kayaks, row boat, pedal boat, dock seat and floating dock, as well as a firepit at water's edge. Lifejackets and floating cushions all provided as well. Opportunity to pay extra and rent pontoon or motor boat. Great views from the back patio as we ate all our meals out back. Gas and charcoal grill available, with grilling utensils and charcoal/ lighter fluid, utilized daily for grilling.
Interior of cabin was a step back into the 1980's, yet all amenities were clean and in exceptional condition. No AC, but with the provided two box fans and the cool nightly Michigan weather (late July) it would not have been used.
Grace McDonald park within a mile for 1 mile wooded trail, all new basketball, tennis, and pickle ball courts. Also, very new playground equipment. Soccer and a baseball field as well. If you are a fan of chicken wings, visit Peegeos and get the charbroiled, dry wings. Again, all with 2 miles of the Cabin.
We did horseback riding at Ranch Rudolph within 15minutes of cabin, hiking at Brown Ridge trails 10 minutes. Traverse City within 15 minutes-rented Jet ski in the East Bay, breakfast at Omelette shop and walked through the bayside festivities. Also, kids liked the activities at Pirates Cove.
Day trip to Sleeping Bear dunes is a must. Packing a lunch is recommended. Empire bluff trail, and the scenic drive loop with multiple scenic spots to stop and eat at the picnic tables. Stopping at the dunes stop in the scenic drive is a must as it is breathtaking . Don't recommend making the descent down these dunes as the climb back up will tire you for the rest of your day. Also, the Cottonwood trail is not recommended for a hike. 1-2 miles but all in loose sand and seems to take 3 to 4 hrs. Instead drive to the climbing dunes stop and hike from the parking lot up to top of dunes.
I rank this family vacation as one of my top 3 as it had everything I wanted.

Rates vary depending on dates or week requested. Spider Lake is such a fine lake about ten miles from Traverse City as the crow flies. There is so much to do and see on site and off. I personally have sought out many activities of interest and will be happy to share my finds. I've provided journals in each cabin so people can share their ideas and experiences with one another-very helpful! Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (ranked #1 most beautiful place in the United States by Good Morning America 2011) is about 50 minutes away..
