About this property

Cottage on Ocean Cove, Down Private Rd, Beach Front

Rejoice and rejuvenate in this tiny slice of paradise. This recently-constructed cottage (built in 2011) is situated at the end of a private lane, directly on a cove. From the old stone wall in front, it’s literally a stone’s throw to the ocean. To the right of where your stone lands is a rocky shoreline (fishing!), to the left is a pebbly beach (swimming!), and within hiking distance around the points on both sides (beach combing!) are large sandy beaches (sand castles!). A small stream flows into the cove. Less than two miles by road from public beach (South Shore) or hike on shore around the point to a private beach (Briggs).

The cottage has one bedroom, living/dining room, galley kitchen with dishwasher, washer and dryer, one full bathroom (w/ shower), an outside shower, a mostly unfurnished loft that can sleep three, screened porch, and gas grill. We are your neighbors and appreciate reasonably quiet renters.

Come listen to the ocean, admire the stars, walk along the shore, read a novel and feel the wind. The way vacation used to be.

Note #1: Because we dislike fees as much as you do, we don’t charge a cleaning fee or pet fee. In exchange, we ask guests to please treat our cottage kindly.

Note #2: We rent only by the week, from one Saturday to the next. We may relax this policy in spring and fall but will likely require stays of at least 4 nights during those times, starting or ending on a Saturday. Send us a message to inquire about stays less than a week.

Charming oceanfront cottage
My husband and I absolutely loved this little house. The accommodations were straightforward and included everything we needed for our week long getaway. The well stocked kitchen made it easy to prepare meals. We walked to a farmer’s market for fresh produce and high quality premade pizza that just needed to be warmed up. The property owner/host couldn’t have been nicer. He stopped by to make sure were settled. Little Compton is a great place for taking long walks on the beach and for exploring the picturesque surroundings on foot or with a bike . It was less than a 2 hr drive from Boston, but felt much farther away.

The property is spacious and well manicured surrounded by natural landscape. A short walk to a beautiful peacefull rocky beach. We had a very relaxing stay. It's our third visit . Our dog was just as pleased as we were.

What a view and sunrise!
Location, location, location is all you need to say! Wish there were more good restaurants in the area. We were lucky in that the weather was perfect every day. Good walking area. The owner was easy to deal with and the information supplied was very helpful.

About the host

Three brothers and their families built this cottage in 2011 on the site of their great-great-great uncle's fishing shack, at the base of a meadow extending from our grandmother's house. Part of the shack, "Maus Haus", dated to the 1800's and survived the Great New England Hurricane in 1938, due to its sheltered location. We grew up spending most of each summer enjoying this wonderful piece of shoreline -- swimming, surfing, crabbing (blue crabs to eat; rock crabs for bait), fishing, skin diving, sailing, biking, kayaking, birding, catching turtles in the pond, building sand castles, finding beach glass, skipping stones, building rafts from driftwood to launch on the pond, hunting night-crawlers, flying kites, collecting mussels, hunting arrowheads, adding to our shell and rock collections, throwing seaweed at each other....really an endless variety of nature-based activities. Our grandmother was a Brownell, a family with deep roots in Little Compton. A tiny, recently rediscovered graveyard with her ancestors is a half-mile away.

Why they chose this property

See video of beach out front which pretty much says it all. It was taken on a day of calm surf. Note the variety of habitats along the shoreline, from sand, to pebbles, to large rocks. Each contains different discoveries.

If you're not into nature, there are lots of historical sites and cultural experiences nearby. None will knock your socks off because Little Compton has a laid-back vibe. Think: "opposite of Newport." Much of the land is preserved by the Little Compton Agricultural Conservancy Trust, including two parcels near Maus Haus, one of which our parents helped establish. It's not unusual to see meadows bordered by old stone walls all the way to the shore. (Check out the intersection of Rt 77 and Peckham Road in a photo-enabled navigation app.)

Be sure to explore Wilburs, the general store on the town commons that carries practically everything -- if they don't have it, you don't need it. The Commons Lunch, a few doors down from Wilburs, is where locals often go for an early breakfast; it's THE place for Johnny Cakes. The Little Compton Community Center, also on the commons, hosts all sorts of family-oriented activities. A half-block down South of Commons Road (really, that's its name) from Wilburs is the Arts Cafe, which has fine coffee, baked goods, and an art studio. Most seating is outdoors in an old apple orchard. Almost next door is the United Congregational Church's Thrift Shop. It has limited hours, adding to the sense of discovery when you find it open!

What makes this property unique

You go to sleep hearing the surf and wake up with the sun rising over the ocean and streaming in the front windows. Often, nobody is on the beach; all access is by private road.

The wildlife is spectacular! Swans fly over daily. Warblers and red-winged blackbirds are abundant. Swallows congregate over the marsh in the fall. Seals visit the cove. Weasels live in the stone walls. Pipping plovers and least terns nest on nearby sandy beaches. Bass and bluefish cause a ruckus in the cove, corraling schools of smaller fish.
