Description

Les Tourterelles

Les Tourterelles (The Turtledoves) has been converted from an old timber framed barn into a building reminiscent of the medieval houses of Troyes. The large oak beams have been exposed wherever possible as have the limestone walls giving the rooms a certain charm. The first floor is constructed from oak floorboards. In the large sitting room/dining room, a wood burner nestles in the chimney place providing additional heat and ambience if you so desire. There is a separate, well equipped kitchen.

There is a bathroom/shower room for each bedroom. The main bedroom with an exposed stone wall has a king size bed and satellite TV along with en suite bathroom with bath, shower, handbasin and toilet as well as a hair dryer. The second bedroom with double aspect windows has two single beds though is large enough to accommodate a third if requested. The third bedroom has french windows with a Juliette balcony.

The terrace in front is bordered by trellis with roses, honeysuckle and clemati

About the property

La Ferme des Tourterelles

Set on the borders of a regional park and champagne vineyards, La Ferme des Tourterelles provides an oasis of calm. There are four cottages recently converted from barns, sleeping 8-10, 6-7, 4-5 and 4 people, each decorated to a high standard providing all comforts. Each have their own private terrace surrounded by honeysuckles and roses. They line a courtyard and all have access to the large garden and outdoor heated swimming pool which have fabulous views of the rolling hills of forest and arable fields.

You can relax on one of the many terraces, play games such a table-tennis or boules. There is much to occupy you from visiting the medieval towns of Bar-sur-Aube or Troyes, shopping in the biggest factory outlets at Troyes, having fun at Nigloland the 3rd largest amusement parks in France, following the champagne route discovering great good value champagnes, walking or cycling in the countryside, or partaking in the water sports on the lakes in the Regional Park nearby.

La Ferme des Tourterelles at Eclance: We are situated in Eclance on the borders of the champagne producing region and the ParkRegional Naturel of the Forest d'Orient. Eclance is a small village nestling in a large clearing surrounded by woods and rolling countryside. It is predominantly a village based on agriculture. La Ferme des Tourterelles used to house dairy cattle whose milk was used by the Eclance cheese maker to make a cheese well known in these parts. Whilst we have been able to revive at least the farm buildings, the cheese maker is now no longer in existance.

Our gardens and pool look out onto the forest of the Regional Park, with the forests and its wildlife protected as a Natura 2000 site. Wildlife is abundant with the seasons greeting different birds as they migrate across our region. Deer and wild boar can also be seen.

For those who book a week at La Ferme des Tourterelles, a bottle of champagne is on offer from our favourite champagne makers Philippe Legout from Rouvres-les-Vignes.

About Sarah Lacey

James a chartered builder and Sarah, who worked in IT as a Client Director, both British, had a dream of renovating a group of old barns to create a holiday haven and with La Ferme des Tourterelles in Eclance, they certainly found such a project. It has taken over 10 years to get to lovingly restore all the old buildings to life. They are now tackling their own home!

Sarah Lacey purchased this barn in 2003

Why Sarah Lacey chose Éclance

It was a great project based on lovely limestone buildings and wooden frames. Whilst almost a ruin, it gave a clean template to create modern interiors whilst maintain the character of the old buildings. It is set on the edge of a small village in the champagne region with glorious views from their land which was large enough to build a big swimming pool. It was also only 4 hours drive from Calais so it is in easy driving distance for guests to join them (as well as to get back to the UK to see family and friends).

What makes this barn unique

Watch the sun set over the forests and fields from the terrace. Hear the cranes as they fly by twice a year in their V formation marking the seasons. Likewise, watch the swallows as they rest on our gutters and roofs in the early morning waiting for their breakfast and suddenly swooping down throughout our courtyard as if a conductor waved their baton for them to start. Get drawn into the huge skies at night trying to identify the constellations and catching sight of the shooting stars. Watch the bats come out to feed in the early evening as you start to prepare your BBQ's (no they will not be looking at your food!). Walk down the courtyard and be enveloped by the aromas of the roses, lavender and honeysuckle. We hope you love these experiences.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a fantastic week at la Ferme des Touterelles this summer. The gite is very spacious and comfortable, and immaculately presented. Sarah and James were the perfect hosts and always on hand to offer advice and ensure our stay was going well, but never invading our privacy. Beautiful grounds with loads of space for all the outdoor activities such as table tennis, boules, badminton, football and of course swimming in the fabulous pool. The kids loved it, as did the adults! Whenever any of us get a sniff of lavendar now we are transported back to the pool side, where it was plentiful! Graham did lots of cycling during our stay and enjoyed the quiet rolling roads. We loved the look of the little villages are were surprised how like the South of France it was. Would highly recommend a stay here, you will be made most welcome!

Lovely gite in beautiful Champagne region

  • 5 of 5

Lovely gite, in gorgeous French countryside. Les Tourterelles is a beautiful barn conversion, spacious, light and comfortable. The shared pool made for friendships to be built over the week of our stay. The lovely hosts, Sarah and James, could not have been more kind - from croissants and champagne supply to helping us out in a family crisis - they are fabulous.

A lovely place to stay in a beautiful setting

  • 5 of 5

We had a fabulous holiday at Les Tourterelles in the Champagne region. The property was in a small village off the beaten track, but everything was within easy reach in a car. The property itself was finished to a very high standard and had everything we could have wished for. The hosts were charming and helpful.

The atmosphere was informal and relaxing. The pool area was fantastic ~ safe and inviting. The area in the height of summer isn't busy, so if you want hurly burly, try something else, but if you like quiet rural France, this is perfect.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your review David. We have found a wonderful rural retreat here in Eclance on the borders of the Champagne vineyards and the Regional Natural Park of the Forest of the Orient with its three lakes. It is certainly a place for guests to relax. Whilst not busy, and if you want to explore the area, there is a lot to offer with the champagne route, the medieval towns of Troyes (with its designer outlet shopping centres) and Bar-sur-Aube, Nigloland voted the second best amusement park in Europe, delving down into history with regards to the Order of the Templars that originated here as well as Napoleon and the world wars, just to name a few things to keep you occupied. .. Walking, biking or even driving on the quiet roads is a pleasure. Thanks again and kindest regards, Sarah and James

Wonderful Family Retreat

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I just spent a week with 2 of his sisters and their husbands in this lovely gite. The property is immaculately cared for and included many amenities which made our stay quite comfortable. The surroundings are very serene which provides for great rest and relaxation. It is also situated where many day trips are within a comfortable driving distance. I would highly recommend this gite for family gatherings or just a nice getaway!

Owner's Response: Thanks very much! We are so pleased you enjoyed your stay. Our cottages are well placed to make the most of the Champagne Route, explore the large lakes close by with it's sports and nature, explore the medieval towns such as Troyes, with kids (young and not so young) there is Nigloland the 3rd largest amusement park in France hidden away in a forest with beautiful gardens, follow in the steps of the Order of the Knights Templars, Napoleon as well as get a window on the theatre of the world wars for those interested in history.. I could carry on! Or why not relax by our pool or gardens with a glass of champagne looking out over the rolling fields to the forests of the Regional Natural Park of the Forest of the Orient.

We are on the borders of the Regional Park of the Fôret d'Orient with three large lakes, one dedicated to wildlife, one to power water sports and one to sailing/windsurfing etc; with the route du Champagne, Côtes des Bars. Nigloland the third largest amusement park is only five minutes away nestling in a wooded valley with gardens, great fun for all. The largest factory outlet shopping area in Europe can be found on the outskirts of Troyes only 40 minutes away. Explore the narrow streets of the medieval centres of Troyes and Bar-sur-Aube (10 minutes) for us. The area is renowned for the many wooden churches. Our back garden looks out onto fields and rolling hills with woodland. Cycle the quiet roads or off road, many walks around the area, and masses of wildlife. You can stay here for long, we are within 2 hours drive to Reims, Nancy, Dijon, Chablis & Beaune and Paris by train.

Golf: 3 Golf courses are available nearby.
