I, Martin, am English, originally from Dorset and Giusy is Italian, from Solofra. We met whilst working in the Superyacht industry, I as Captain and Giusy as Purser, on large private and charter yachts. We bought the property in 2001 and set about restoring it over a six year period, the property having been abandoned for forty years. We live on site in the farm house and are on hand to assist in any way if required, we do however always respect the privacy of our guests..we are on hand should you need us, but otherwise leave you to yourselves. Our experience of working on Superyachts gives us the experience to offer you a excellent service in a very well maintained property.
Martin purchased this Cottage in 2001
Why Martin chose Massarosa
The rental house is part of a traditional Tuscan podere. It is set in the lush green hills above the village of Stiava, seven kilometres from the coast. The house has been restored to the highest standards and is equipped with all amenities including air conditioning in the bedrooms and full underfloor heating during the cooler months. There is a swimming pool of 15 m x 6 m, sited 8 metres from the rental house that guests are free to use at all times. in the summer months the temperature of the pool is usually around 28c to 31c. The property extends to 9 hectares ( 22 acres ), and guests are free to go where they wish. On the property we breed alpaca, and usually have between 25 and 30 animals at any one time. The alpaca are usually a big hit with children, who often like to give a hand feeding them in the mornings.
What makes this Cottage unique
The location of the property is it’s greatest benefit, and the one that makes it particularly attractive. When at the property, you feel as if you are miles from anywhere because of it’s seclusion. In fact, it is just a five minute walk down to the village with all its amenities and only 12 minutes by car to the seaside town of Viareggio. The property is accessed from the village by a private road of 750 metres, has no immediate neighbours, the nearest other house is 500 metres away and the nearest public road is 1 kilometre away. If you are looking for a peaceful and tranquil place for your holiday, this is as good as you will find. Should you on the other hand, wish to enjoy good restaurants and fashionable bars, the area has plenty. Pietrasanta, Camiore, Forte di Marmi, Viareggio and Marina di Camiore have them in abundance. There are also many excellent tavernas up in the hills. For day trips, the ancient walled city of Lucca is only 25 minutes away, Firenze 1 hour and Pisa, with it’s airport 30 minutes. Versilia as the costal area of Tuscany is called, is a wonderful area of long sandy beaches and pine groves, yet only 10 kilometres inland there are majestic mountains, famous for their marble, towering to over 1,800 metres. The area offers a host of things to do, and almost every activity is catered for. If you have any questions, just call us and ask.

Lots of effort and love took to make this house into a great place. Martin, makes you feel welcome and makes sure you are comfortable and happy. I recommend this to anyone that will like to relax and be close to many wonderful places in the Tuscan area.
Thank you Martin and Giusy for making your place so wonderful.
Fantastic - highly recommended
Family of four - two kids age 6 and 8. We stayed for two weeks. Great house. Nice bedrooms with a/c. Well-equipped kitchen. Very cosy living room. Nice patio. Pool was superb and a favorite with the kids. Beautiful surroundings and views of mountains and ocean. Very easy distance to small beautiful villages (not touristy) and the well-known Lucca and Pisa. It makes for a fantastic vacation spot and we highly recommend it.
This is a beautiful house with fantastic pool large enough to swim properly and very peaceful
To clarify there are two bedrooms. A/C is in bedrooms only. To say there is satellite/cable is stretching things as there was at best one channel in English that we could find. Insect bites were a constant problem even though we were prepared. Having said all that a very high quality property in a lovely position very good for visits to Pisa Lucca Florence etc and we were pleasantly surprised by Viareggio as a resort. All in all good value. The pool and grounds in particular are gorgeous.
Perfect holiday at a beautifully kept property with a fantastic pool
This beautifully restored farm offers tranquility and luxury, and our stay was even richer from the contact with animals. In addition the farm is in an area which offers everything from culture to beach life and boat trips. We enjoyed lazy days by the pool, the mountains, the sea, Pisa, Lucca and Florence, great food and wonderful hosts - thank you Giusy and Martin!
Relaxing, peaceful, home from home
Il Giardino is a lovely, peaceful villa set in a stunning hillside location with impressive views. We stayed for two weeks with our two teenage sons and there was ample room for all of us. The villa itself is beautifully furnished, spotlessly clean and is exactly as shown in the photographs. The kitchen is well equipped and the bathrooms are large and modern. It was a joy to sit out on the terrace overlooking the large pool and garden which are beautifully maintained. Martin and Giusy live just behind the villa and are always around to offer advice or help when needed but they are never intrusive. There is a steep, winding track up to the villa but it is no problem to drive up and down and there are two dogs and some cats around the site but they are completely friendly and no bother at all (the dogs do bark momentarily as Martin & Giusy leave but they quickly settle again and did not bother us in the slightest). The villa is ideally located to visit lots of places - we visited Pisa, Florence, Lucca, Cinque Terre and drove up into the mountains and the Garfagnana. We were all very sad to leave Il Giardino (even our sons were sorry to leave) and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it as a wonderful place to stay.
Glad you all had a safe and uneventful trip back home. Very many thanks for your lovely review of property, so glad you enjoyed your stay with us. If we can be of help again at some point in the future, please let us know. Once again, many thanks for your kind words...and also for leaving the house so beautifully clean and tidy.

Wonderful house with great outdoor space
We have just returned from a fabulous holiday in Tuscany at Il Giardino. The house is just beautiful, much bigger internally than it appears in the photos and the outdoor space is brilliant for children - a big grassy area where they could play, fantastic pool and Martin is happy for you to wander around the rest of the grounds. It's so peaceful and we really enjoyed the terrace too - it was lovely to sit there admiring the views and listening to the chimes of the bell tower on the hillside above. The house is well equipped, immaculately clean and full of beautiful pieces that the owners have collected on their travels. Martin's house is very close, but he didn't intrude at all, yet was always on hand and approachable if needed to give advice and recommendations and he was very interesting to talk to having led a very colourful life! The house is well placed to visit lots of places - Cinque Terre, the Garfagnana, the coast, Pisa, Lucca and Florence. Our boys loved Martin's dogs who were very well behaved and didn't venture into our part of the garden unless invited by the children. All in all we had a wonderful time (despite the mosquitoes) and can't wait to return, in fact we're worried about raving too much in case someone else wants the same week as us!
Oh thanks Guys. That's really kind of you. So glad you enjoyed yourselves, you were a pleasure to have around. Hoping we see you again in the not too distance future. Meantime, look after yourselves and enjoy life.

Il Giardino is located in the hills just above the village of Stiava and reached by a private road. Just across the valley is the Village of Bargecchia who's church bells are said to have inspired Puccini to write the opera 'Tosca'. The house is surrounded by 20 acres of garden, fields, olive groves and woodland with views to coast. Thanks to it's location the area keeps it's green and verdant look for all of the year. The resort town of Viareggio with it's beaches, restaurants and excellent shopping is 15 minutes by car and Historic Lucca 25 minutes. Between the coastal plane of Versilia, with its pine woods and lakes, to the Appenine Mountains famous for their marble mines, and stunning scenery the area really offer something for every one. It is possible to partake of almost every sport and activity imaginable from Golf to Skiing, Sailing to Walking, Paragliding to fishing. The area is also close to many famous cultural areas such as Firenze, Pisa and Sienna with all they have to offer.
