Photos and Description of this 1 bedroom holiday home in Ely - Cedar Rock Lodge

Hand Chiseled Rock Cabin, Newly Remodeled, Private, Lakeshore w/ dock, Unique

Cedar Rock Lodge is a one bedroom plus cabin located on a bluff along Shagawa Lake. Renovated in spring of 2013 it features all new appliances, new furniture and pillow top beds. During remodeling, a new four season porch was added and deck overlooking the islands. This custom cabin is a one of a kind gem tucked in the cedar trees offering a private escape. Built in the 1940’s by a local craftsman, this cabins exterior is a solid rock structure masoned from the Ely rock bed the cabin rests on. The interior features a coordinating stone fireplace. The original owner took pride in his craftsmanship and customized pine paneling, trim, window framing and built in cabinetry. In the spring of 2012, we began remodeling the historical cabin taking special care to preserve its beautiful bones and adding modern touches to enhance the look and feel. This cabins decor has a quaint feel that makes it a unique Northwood’s experience.

The cabin sleeps 4 people. It has a new pillow top queen bed in the master bedroom, a full size pillow top murphy bed and new full size sleeper sofa . The entire house has received new flooring and window treatments. The bathroom has a standard sized bathub/shower with new tiled walls and a massaging showerhead. The kitchen is fully equipped with a microwave and new appliances. The Sun porch overlooks the lake and walks out to a patio/fire pit area that the original owner built into the rock cliffs in the yard. The cabin has his and her bikes, games, puzzles, books, dishes, binoculars, and flat screen with cable TV and dvd player. It is nicely appointed with the conveniences of home. You will have plenty of opportunities to view wildlife in the back yard. The cabin has many families of ducks that often reside in the tall grass along the shore, chipmunks that can be hand feed on the deck, and loons swimming in the Bay. Tucked in the woods on a rock bluff this location is about as secluded as you can get without a boat and still within minutes to local dining and amenities. Our guests will be greeted with a special care basket filled with local items such as locally roasted coffee, all natural snacks, and coupons to make your stay with us a memorable one. Friday to Friday rentals only with minimum one week stay for Summer 2016 . Saturday to Saturday starting in September. Winter rates available for snow enthusiasts or those who chose to snuggle in by the fire with a book.

Winter rates are available starting the third week in November through the last week in April. The price includes the cabin rental and cleaning. Due to privacy, it does not include snow removal during the stay unless substantial amounts of snow falls. Minor snow removal on sidewalks is the the responsibility of the guests. In the winter the cabin sleep 4 guests (one bedroom and a murphy bed). Shovels and snowblower is provided.

About Dan and Sinnamon Krings

This cabin has been in our family for 30 years. It was the Northwoods Camp where 4 generations learned to love and appreciate the simpler things in life. In 2011 the owner passed and the cabin was cared for by its estate. Our family missed the traditions and we purchased the cabin in the early spring of 2012. Dan is an engineer at Polaris Industries, Sinnamon owns a clothing store, and Amelia is nine years old. Three loving dogs complete our family. We live 5 hours away and life is busy. We love our escapes to the cabin to get away from it all. Dan enjoys walleye fishing on Shagawa Lake, Amelia loves exploring the islands and Semers Park and Sinnamon always makes time to shop, go to the spa and dine at the downtown businesses. In the evenings, we like to sit by the fire and listen to the loons. We can't make it to the cabin as much as we like so we have opened our doors to guests to help them escape to the untouched northwoods that we call our home away from home.

Dan and Sinnamon Krings purchased this house in 2012

Why Dan and Sinnamon Krings chose Minnesota

As many stories begin the history of Cedar Rock Lodge is a tale of love and love lost. In the early 1940’s the lakeshore of Schafer Bay and surrounding area was a cow pasture. A husband and wife moved into the area and begin construction of a new home on the rocky ravine. Saima purchased the land for $1.00 and an undisclosed duty titled on the abstract as personal services. The couple begin their life together in this home but, as years past Saima’s heart was no longer in the marriage This homestead still exists south of Cedar Rock Lodge on the adjacent property. A fire swept through the area and changed the look of the home in 1945. Saima rebuilt the home after the fire but the couple’s relationship was not able to be saved. They separated their assets and divided the property. The man of the house was still very much in love with Saima but she had other interests. On the edge of the property line, he built a garage with an apartment above where he lived and kept a watchful eye on his ex- love Saima. The house and garage still remain standing after renovations on the adjoining lot to Cedar Rock Lodge. As you can about imagine, Saima did not like the constant supervision and him watching over the coming and goings on the property. There was not only a battle taking place on the two properties but the United States was at war. Saima’s ex-husband was sent away to defend the country while Saima was planning her attack on the home front.

The land that Cedar Rock sits on was a huge rock outcropping. The rock bluffs overlooking Shagawa Lake was a feature Saima knew her ex- husband cherished. He gave her this land in the divorce thinking it would never be possible to construct a home on. While he was away at war, she had the rock blasted and her new love masoned the home out of the rock. When the soldier returned life was much different for him. He continued living next door into his 80's watching over Siama.

What makes this house unique

* Private Lakeshore and Dock

* Cabin is at the end of a road and very private.

This is a one of a kind property. As you drive along the windy road along the shoeline that leads to the cabin you discover the private escape tucked in the tall cedar trees on a huge rock ridge. The cobblestone sidewalk is as old as the cabin and the covered patio welcomes you to step inside. You unlock the door to get a peek of the stone firplace in the family room. A comfy leather sofa waits for you to get cozy. The french doors lead you to a untouched private yard high above the lake with pinecone and needles blanket perfect for hiking up the cliff. A quaint bedroom with a lakeview is where you will lay your head. The solid wood antique door in the kitchen opens to a sunroom with the most amazing view of the islands. Step outside onto the deck and take a deep breathe of the fresh air, relax and enjoy because this is your life for the next week.

Guestbook comments from the manager

This time with family at your cabin has been a blessing for all of us. I've been reintroduced to my wonderful family after being absent, buried in books, for most of the year. All of the knots in my neck are now gone and I'm feeling totally relaxed:)! You get full credit for this - and cheaper than therapy:)!!!

We are having a splendid time and the cabin is, as always, wonderful! The additions are great (but we really didn't need any - the cabin was, in our eyes, better than perfect before!) My only thought is you are too kind to your guests:). There really is absolutely nothing you could do to make guests more comfortable. I admire your thoughtfulness and talent for being a gracious host!!!

We were sitting on the deck this morning with the pupsters happily at our feet. A woman who looks like the breeder of our toy poodle walked by and our pup ran happily after her. I called her back and as she came running an eagle came over two seconds later in front of us and down the road to Stoney Ridge. I think she was hoping to have a poodle breakfast!

We are sadly thinking of going home but thinking about next year already:). We are wondering if you will have the cabin available next year, if so, we would love to return:)

So, a sincere thank you for sharing your lovely cabin with us. We deeply appreciate your thoughtfulness and we are grateful for the opportunity to be here.

Hope all is well with you and yours!

Best Regards,

We have been spending a week in this cabin every fall for several years and we enjoy it more and more each year. We can gets lots of exercise hiking the trails in the north woods or visiting the Ely sites, such as the Bear Center and Wolf Center, or check out a book at the local bookstore and relax at the cabin. Dining at Burntside lodge is always a delight, especially when we have a table overlooking the lake to watch the sunset. Even though we don't fish, we manage to find some great walleye to fix at the cabin where we can also watch the great sunsets. Overall, a wonderful place to stay. We will be back - hopefully again and again.

Cozy cabin, thoughtfully updated to preserve original charm.

  • 5 of 5

This was our first stay in the Ely area. We very much enjoyed our stay at this little cabin. It's a clean and cozy place that feels quite private despite being within walking distance of Ely mainstreet shops and restaurants. We found it to be a perfect place to rest and recharge each evening after active days outdoors.

Really enjoyed our 1 week stay at Cedar Rock Lodge. Great location, clean, well equipped, and cozy décor.! Beautiful country! Seen so many bald eagles, golden eagles, loons, and ducks. We fished quite a bit. Small mouth bass (fun to catch), walleye, and the big one that got a way! a northern pike. A short walk into town, the beach, islands, and trails. Watched the Superior National Forest Sea Planes fly in and out of their base. We also hiked to Kawishiwi Falls. Thanks for your hospitality! Hope to visit again!

Ely Cabin Stay

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed the cabin. It had all the amenities we needed with the exception of internet. However, sometimes it is nice to just get away from it all. The cabin was very clean and we enjoyed our stay! Town is nearby with nice restaurants and shops and excellent cross-country skiing nearby. I would recommend the place for others. It isn't large but comfortable for a family of 4.

Wonderful winter vacation

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the cabin for 4 days at the end of December and it was the perfect place for us. We have a six years old boy and he loved it. We were very pleased with the book and movie selections provide by the owners (thank you!), and our son enjoyed playing with his toys in the living room while the electric fire place was on. This historic cabin is very charming and has everything you need. The kitchen was very well equipped with multiple utensils: in fact, we cooked almost all our meals. We went out to eat twice and we really liked Gator's Grilled Cheese Emporium, a restaurant that opened last June, they make all their food from scratch, it's not very big and it's a good place for families. We also found out that on Thursdays Ely Northland Market (a grocery store) makes pasties - they are very good!

While we were at the cabin we went cross country skiing at Hidden Valley and Trezona Trail (in town). We snowshoed and hiked in the BWCA at South Farm Ski Trail and in the Echo trail area. Beautiful areas to hike! We really enjoyed our stay at Ely also thank you to this beautiful and cozy cabin!
