POINT REYES NATIONAL SEASHORE comprises over 100 square miles, including 32,000 acres of coastal wilderness area. TOMALES BAY STATE PARK is comprised of a 2,000-acre day-use park which features four gently sloping, surf-free beaches, protected from winds by Inverness Ridge, the backbone of the Point Reyes Peninsula, as well as forests, fields, hills, meadows and marshes - each with its own plant life, including varieties of trees, shrubs and wildflowers. One of the finest remaining virgin groves of Bishop pine in California is in the park's Jepson Memorial Grove. Wildlife in the area includes foxes, raccoons, badgers, weasels, chipmunks, squirrels, rabbits, deer, bobcats, skunks, wood rats, field mice, moles and other animals. There are also land and sea birds, including the spotted owl, quail, goldfinches, puffins, great blue heron, pelicans, ruddy ducks, woodpeckers, meadowlarks - and more. The park has hiking trails connecting all its bay beaches, and is a popular place for picnicking, swimming, kayaking, canoeing, bird watching, clamming and boating.

About Jeff and Barbie Fairchild

Jeff & Barbie Fairchild

Retired restauranteurs, we now enjoy our grandchildren, sailing, boating, travelling and enjoying all the wonders of our current home here in the heart of Point Reyes National Seashore.

Jeff and Barbie Fairchild purchased this studio in 1954

Why Jeff and Barbie Fairchild chose Inverness

This property was purchased as a vacation home by my grandparents. They added a second home, Hi House, in 1960. My siblings and I purchased the property from the family(s) in 1974. We rented occasionally to friends, and in 2004 my wife and I began to offer the homes as vacation rentals.

What makes this studio unique

Peace, solitude, nature. Surrounded by Tomales Bay State Park and the Point Reyes National Seashore. Property is isolated, yet only minutes from the seashore, bay, hiking, biking, birding, whale watching and dining.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you for sharing this lovely home. We thought the view inside was as beautiful as the view outside! We stayed here two nights while on our honeymoon. We listened to Sinatra & Dean Martin while sipping champagne. I cooked for Eric the first time as his wife here at Hi House. We will be back!

Fantastic! Incredible! Nothing but superlatives could fill this space.

Beautiful home, incredible location, surrounded by the natural world. The IP Market and Palace Market had everything we needed, and there's always a treat at Bovine Bakery! We enjoyed kayaking on Tomales Bay, spending time on the trails of Point Reyes, reading and contemplating the years ahead and how best to make use of that time. What's not to like? Thank you for making this treasure available for us to enjoy this peaceful space to reflect and to disconnected from all else.

Favorite rental ever!

  • 5 of 5

It’s not exactly a treehouse, but I still call it that. We felt like squirrels all up in the cozy nest in the treetops. It was a one-of-a-kind experience. The fog blocked a lot of our far-off views, but created this dream-like, storybook scene. The birds were so fun to watch and deer visit frequently. Kitchen was well-appointed and the whole place has little treasures to behold. So clean and comfortable, even with its so-impressive architecture. We just loved this home. Highly recommended for any couple of people looking for a unique, romantic, very close to nature yet safe and warm and dry, getaway.

One thing to note though: Google maps sent us MILES out too far out the peninsula to a spot in the middle of the road where the cows roamed! Be careful.

Very comfortble, quiet and private space

  • 5 of 5

A remarkable, peaceful setting. The house is on top of the ridge, the fog clears here first then clears to the ocean on one side and the bay on the other. A very comfortable, quiet and private space. Thank you for sharing.

What a gem!!!

  • 5 of 5

What's not to like about this place?!?! The unique architecture, the panoramic views from inside and outside, the wildlife, and the easy proximity to everything the Pt. Reyes and Tomales Bay area has to offer. I've rented my share of properties over the years, but certainly nothing like this before! My stay here was amazing, and I hope to be able to do it again in the future!
