*** Special Easter Week 2017 rates:

£225 discount per week!! ***

Step back in time and enjoy nostalgia mixed with modern comforts in this unusual property, constructed over two 1926 railway carriages. The railway carriages in their original form run either side of the good-sized lounge/dining room. Situated on the beach at Selsey with fantastic sea views from the first floor lounge & balcony to as far as Brighton. Within easy walking distance of the local Bakers, Butchers and Gourmet Fish and Chips or fresh fish from the local fishermen just a two minute walk away.

All the bedrooms in our 3 bedroom home are contained within the railway carriages with original carriage doors. Lounge/Dining Room with stairs to first floor Lounge and Balcony overlooking the sea. Ground floor walk in power shower and separate bathroom.

Enclosed garden with rotary clothes line and private steps onto the beach.

Unlimited Broadband Internet Access.

The Cormorant has a full linen service included in the price; all the beds will be made up for your arrival and we provide bath/hand towels as well as tea towels.

Fishing: East beach (at the top of the garden steps!) has some popular fishing spots. The experts sit for hours trying to catch the bass, the novices wait until the summer and until the fish are jumping (you will see them from the balcony) and catch some mackerel for the barbecue.

Diving: If you are interested in scuba diving, Selsey has an active aqua club who can give lots of friendly advice. Their website intro says:

The Selsey Bill branch is a relatively new branch of the BSAC, formed in 1997 by a group of very experienced divers from the local area. Our most experienced divers can date their diving history back to the early 1970’s; some still even have their twin hose regulators hidden away. As a result we have many years of experience of diving in the local area and further afield..

We play an active part in supporting the local community through various activities and have very good contacts with both the local fishermen and the Selsey lifeboat crew; several having trained as divers with our group.

A very English seaside holiday

  • 5 of 5

The Cormorant is a real treat - a kind of luxury beach hut with the extra novelty of having two converted railway carriages inside it. The property is one of only a handful of houses in Selsey that is right on the beach and the upstairs balcony provides a wonderful location to watch the ever-changing moods of the sea.

The carriages have been very imaginatively converted into three bedrooms, a kitchen and bathroom and are surprisingly spacious. There is also a small walk-in wet room which is great for a post-swim wash-down. In between the carriages is a wooden sitting/dining room downstairs and a TV room upstairs. The whole space has a '50s feel about it (with a sprinkling of Kath Kidston here and there) but all very clean and fresh.

Selsey itself is not a chocolate box-style seaside location but it has a charm all of its own. The local people are very friendly, the fish and chip shop/bakery/lobster and crab shack/ice-cream hut are all excellent. The beach is pebble rather than sand which means it doesn't attract huge crowds like West Whittering. But it is clearly one of the those places that visitors return to again and again because of its relaxed vibe and sunny microclimate. (Can be a bit windy so bring a fleece).

My strongest memory is of the very English sounds of Selsey; the seagulls and wood pigeons, the ice-cream van playing Greensleeves, the old-fashioned propellor-driven plane practising stunts high over head and, best of all, the waves lulling us to sleep at night.

Fabulous stay

  • 4 of 5

We had a brilliant week in probably the most ideally situated holiday home. The weather was decent, the dog had a ball with the beach as his back garden. The house is quite deceptively spacious and well equipped. Cleaned well for our arrival. It could do with a bit of a spruce up, interior paintwork and timber work outside need maintaining, but I understand that the house has just been sold, so completely understand why it looks a little tired in places. Highly recommended.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your review and we are really glad that you had a fabulous stay. The location is amazing and we will pass on to our cleaning team that you found it cleaned well. We have an annual programme of painting - external and internal - and we do this at the end of the season. Sorry if it was looking a bit shabby in areas. We hope very much that you will be back soon. A fab bijou little gem ideal for a break away from every day life.

  • 4 of 5

It was an annual girlie weekend away with two dogs. It was great to be able to just open the gate and stroll out on to the stony beach and walk along the sea wall with the dogs.

It was quiet and peaceful. The sun shone on Saturday afternoon so was able to sit out in the pretty garden and soak up the rays.

The carriage accommodation was warm, snug and comfortable.

A great stay. Well worth a visit. Ideal for 4/5.

Unique location next to beach.

  • 5 of 5

A great place for a break by the sea for swimming and walking.

Up the steps over the seawall and you are on the shingle beach which is great for swimming in clear water. Amazingly this part of the beach is nice and quiet.

The accommodation has beautifully decor with cosy railway carriage bedrooms.

We walked along the beach to the nature reserve about 20minutes to the east.

Sun all day in the garden. Close to shops and pub with fresh seafood.

All in all a lovely stay.

This was the first time in a railway carriage holiday, very querky but a lovely experience, the property was very clean and a beautiful view from the balcony upstairs. We thoroughly enjoyed our getaway and would recomend to any holiday makers. We only had to walk a fewyards to collect lobsters and fresh caught fish to take back and cook. Thank you so much we will be looking out for another holiday with you. Jennie & Colin

Lovely House by the Sea

  • 4 of 5

We loved the house, especially so close to the beach and we got to experience it in all weathers. We arrived to millpond flat sea with no wind on the first day and glorious sunshine the next morning and then full-on on shore crazy windy conditions the next day with rain and the waves crashing which was just as much fun. The house is lovely, so very sweet with its railway carriage interior charm, cosy bedroom and the upper balcony. And its fantastic to be able to dart in and out to the beach at whim and to be able to dash inside to get something, use the bathroom, warm up some very cold kids in a hot bath the minute they've come out the freezing sea. Given that we were there in inclement weather I would say that there were a few things that the owners could improve that we noticed - these are small things - by no means did they stop us having a great time but with a bit of care it'd make a difference: The furniture upstairs is really disappointing - a futon sofa and a dreadfully uncomfortable metal frame sofa with cushions that slide off all the time and wind that whistles through the doors - could be so easily and cheaply be made better. If you've got rubbish weather and the evenings are chilly you want to be able to be cosy and comfy in the evening. The light bulbs didn't all work so it was really dark too. The door hooks don't hold your clothes. The shower has nowhere to hold your clothes/towel and its by the front door which is all glass so its all a bit awkward to take a shower. We arrived to no toilet paper or kitchen paper in the property - not great when you arrive with kids desperate for the loo after travelling there. That felt a bit 'tight'. Also very sad to see the 'For Sale' sign (irritatingly placed in full view front and back) as we'd rent the property again in a heartbeat as it really is a great house full of charm and such fun to stay in. We loved it. Highly recommend it.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your review. The Cormorant is a fantastic place to be in all weathers. The first night we stayed, April 15 years ago, there was a massive storm and we sat outside on the balcony in our water proofs with the waves crashing along the beach and the wind howling around us. We'll never forget that. Thank you for the list of improvements - very much appreciated. I have spoken to the cleaners and we are very sorry the loo roll was not there on arrival - this was due to supplies running low and they have now been topped up. This year we have added a full linen service, with all beds made up on arrival, at no extra cost - it was an oversight that there was not a loo roll there on arrival, not because of the cost of a loo roll. The hooks for the shower should have been bought weeks ago and should have been put on the door to the shower. I will check this. I think you may be saying that they are there, but don't hold the clothes. I will check this. There should be 3 'over the door' hooks to hold clothes and towel. I am sorry that you found the sofas uncomfortable. We have not received complaints before, but will have a look at improving the sofas on the top floor. The light bulbs should have been replaced and there are spares in the drawers. I will check the spares are there and replace any missing bulbs. We are selling The Cormorant after 15 wonderful years. We are very sad in many ways. To encourage the sale we need to have visible sale boards. I will check the location of these boards to see if we can make them less in full view. We hope very much that we will see you again at The Cormorant. Best wishes, Simon and Jocelyn
