About the property

Large studio apartment, direct access into walled garden with solar heated pool

Situated within the walls of the village our house offers visitors a relaxed, peaceful & historic holiday experience. We, Guy and Claire provide a warm welcome and are on hand to provide advice or suggestions on where to visit. Our reviews are excellent so why not search 'Holidays in Lagrasse' to view the comments from our past clients who describe the activities and the high standard of service that we provide. Held number 1 Speciality Lodgings 2014/15/16 in Languedoc-Rousillion and awarded Certificate of Excellence for 2015, 2016 and 2017.

During loving renovation, the house unveiled many historic secrets associated with the Cathars. There are 15 authentic stone arches scattered throughout the property and many 13th century paintings were uncovered. The latter are currently under restoration with the first paintings unveiled in the village Maison de Patrimone (September 2014) revealing 20 chevaliers including one that depicts the coat of arms for Simon de Montfort who was hated in the Languedoc for his cruelty and ambition towards the Cathars; you are sure to feel you have taken a step back in time! However, with all mod cons and a comfortable feel to the living accommodation in the self catering gîte, it is history at its best! With arguably the most spectacular façade in the village, Neuf Rue de Cancans really is a gem nestled within the cobbled streets of a village voted 'One of Frances Prettiest'

The Garden Studio, so called for its access straight into the garden, offers the perfect chance to enjoy easy yet comfortable French living. With a log burner for cooler months and huge glass patio doors, this is a wonderful retreat throughout the year. The Garden Studio, entered through the glass patio doors from the garden, has a fully equipped fitted kitchen, and a dining area with delightful views back into the garden. An imposing archway leads into the lounge with its comfortable furniture a log burner and a front door for easy access to the village.

At the other end of this delightful room and under the original wooden beams is the sleeping area. With clever design and furniture placement, although actually one large room, this feels like 2 separate areas. The sleeping area has a king size double bed (can be made into twin beds to suit all requirements), chest of drawers and a wardrobe for all your storage. A shower room leads off this end of the room, with a large fully tiled Italian walk in shower, WC & vanity sink unit.

During renovations the plans were drawn up to make this a one bedroom apartment but when demolition work unearthed a beautiful hidden stone arch and numerous wooden beams we decided we simply couldn't cover any of these features up with a wall! And so the Garden Studio was born. Free wifi (18mb) available.

The apartment also includes access to the communal garden. One of the few houses within the village walls to have a garden - a little piece of paradise can be found. With its beautiful grassy lawn, 3 BBQ areas, a hot plate plancha, a pizza oven, 5 terraces & solar heated secure pool with sun deck, spending time in the communal garden will be high on your list of priorities.

Cathar Trail: As Lagrasse nestles in the foothills of the Pyrenees on the Cathar Trail there is an abundance of historic sightseeing to be done within the region.

Water Sports: Lagrasse has a small river beach which is a fun place to spend time relaxing and excellent for fishing. For those who want more excitement the beaches at Gruissan, Leucate and Port Nouvelle are only half an hour away. Here you can wind surf, water ski, kite surf, book fishing trips, hire boats and go sailing.

We provide: free wifi internet, bed linen plus tea towels and bath towels. Laundry facilities are on site. Cooler bags, ice packs etc are available for the days you would like to take a picnic. We can arrange holistic treatments, wine tasting, painting courses and for those feeling more energetic guided walking is available through the local countryside and bike hire can easily be arranged. For those of you bringing your own bikes we have plenty of secure space on site.

Holidays in Lagrasse is an ideal solution for friends and family looking to holiday together but wanting their own space! Please see our website Holidays in Lagrasse for further information on our other properties. (The Grenier Apartment, The Arch Apartment and the Pool View Studio).

Will consider: long term lets and short breaks.

We are open all year round.

About Guy Viccars

We are a couple that originated from Cornwall where we both grew up in the holiday industry. After careers in the marine industry, super-yachts and economic regeneration we have found our little piece of paradise here in Lagrasse.

After a 5 year and 600 ton renovation the secrets of the property have been revealed, providing some of the most amazing architecture, sculptures and paintings from the Cathar period.

Supplying plenty of things to see and talk about over a cold glass.

Guy Viccars purchased this apartment in 2004

Why Guy Viccars chose Lagrasse

The house is nearly a 1000 years old. It has a unique past and an ongoing story that seems to build with every room you walk in to.

What makes this apartment unique

To much to tell so we will wet your whistle:

Sculptures of the chief knight for the abbey of Lagrasse ( the true location of the Cathar trial);

Painting's of the battles dating back to the 13th century. The first 26 paintings have been restored with some on display at the village 'Maison de Patrimone;'

15 arches with the last 13th century arch finally put in situ in the early part of 2014 completing a loving renovation of an immensely historic house;

Great company, cold local wines and our legendary BBQs!

Guestbook comments from the manager

So sad to be leaving sunny, laid back Lagrasse for wet England. We;ve had a wonderful week and really enjoyed exploring the area from this beautiful studio. We couldn't have been more comfortable and you've been so welcoming, thoughtful and knowledgeable hosts. Thank you both so much.

All the ingredients for a wonderful holiday

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful holiday in Guy and Claire's gite in Lagrasse. We stayed in the Garden apartment, which opens straight out onto it's own outside dining area and also provides direct access into the beautiful garden complete with above-ground pool. Not only was the gite itself characterful, immaculate and well equipped, but so was the outside space. There is a sunny lawned area complete with sun loungers, and also several covered shady spots including a summer kitchen, BBQ area and even a pizza oven. Guy and Claire are the most welcoming, hospitable and fun hosts, and as their guests we were welcome to be as sociable or a private as we wished. Lagrasse is a gorgeous village, full of history, with it's own abbey a 5 minute walk from the gite. There is a boulangerie, small supermarket, pharmacy, GP surgery and a variety of little artisan shops in the village. We loved the fact that as a sporty family, we could hike, cycle and powerwalk from the door. There is also a beautiful river running through the village, warm (!) and great for swimming - there was even a lifeguard on duty. When we cycled, we were able to hire bikes from the village - 10 euros for a conventional hybrid for half a day, and 20 euros for an electric hybrid. The electric bike was great, and meant we could all cycle together as a family - the hills were no problem! The terrain offers something for everyone - flatish valley roads, long extended hilly routes and tracks throughout the forests and hills. For anyone wanting to take their own bikes, Guy has a workshop, cleaning facilities and safe storage at the gite. Apart from the "outdoor activities" the village also has many music festivals - it is definitely a place which manages to be both vibrant and laid back. We loved eating out in the village - everything from tapas to Michelin starred - and also the wonderful pizzeria in the neighbouring village of Fabrezan. There are some fantastic places to visit within a max 1 hour drive of the gite - a beautiful abbey at Fontfroide, spectacular cathar castles - we loved the Chateau de Peyrepertuse perched high on the hillside, where we were lucky enough to see a falconery display, and beautiful medieval towns including Minerve, Narbonne and the spectacular Carcasonne. Even the Med is only an hour away if a beach trip and dip in the sea is your thing. We had the most wonderful holiday, and we have no hesitation in giving "Holidays in Lagrasse" our unreserved recommendation. You'll love it!

Owner's Response: Wow what a review. It was lovely to meet you all. Great fun and very energetic with all the walking, cycling and power-walking you did. You put us to shame although I'll never forget my power walking experience to the Notre Carla and back again! I must get fit. We really enjoyed your company and so glad that you enjoyed staying in the Garden Studio, relaxing in the garden and exploring the village and surrounding area. Your review really spells out that that there is so much to do within a 1 hour drive. We also enjoyed the memorable evenings sharing a glass or two! We wish you all the best for the future and hope to see you in the future. With our very best wishes Claire, Guy the boys and Chilli

A hidden gem

  • 5 of 5

As we entered the courtyard for the first time through the large, wooden doors we knew we'd discovered a hidden gem. All the properties are accessed off this courtyard and our garden studio, which was on one level opened directly onto this calm oasis. The spacious studio exceeded our expectations in all ways with its modern kitchen and shower room, comfortable sitting and sleeping area. The tastefully decorated property was spotlessly clean, very well equipped and maintained.

We loved medieval Lagrasse with its narrow, cobbled streets and centuries old Abbey. The area offers excellent walking, cycling and sightseeing of pretty villages, Cathar castles and Abbeys. There's the opportunity for wine tasting in Lagrasse and the locality, together with a number of venues for lunch or dinner.

Claire and Guy are very amicable, helpful and knowledgeable on the area. We definitely plan to return to this hidden gem and next time stay longer than a week.

Great, well designed studio suite

  • 5 of 5

The garden suite is very well designed and spacious. The kitchen has all the utensils needed. The courtyard is wonderfully sunny, spacious and brimming with flowers. We loved sitting out reading or having an apero. Lagrasse is a lovely small village, not too busy. The Saturday market is small but local with good cheese and veg. Cathar castles and hiking trails are plentiful. We will return.

Our French home from home

  • 5 of 5

We first came to Lagrasse in September 2016 and were back again in March 2017 which we think says it all. We cannot wait to go again and are now saving our pennies. Only one complaint: we did not want to go home! The apartments are cosy in the winter and cool in the summer. Claire and Guy are really the perfect hosts and made our holiday, again, something we shall not forget. The village is great and if you want a lazy day, a walk round the abbeyand river with lunch at one of cafes/restaurants cannot be beaten. Thank you Claire and Guy, we hope to see you again.

Until the next time. With our best wishes Claire, Guy the boys and Chilli.

The Perfect Place for Christmas

  • 5 of 5

My husband & I wanted to experience Christmas in France as we've been researching properties to purchase. We had stayed with Guy & Claire a few times before so it made sense to return for Christmas. This time we stayed in the Garden Studio - waow !! this truly was deserving of 5 stars. There was absolutely nothing more that we needed for our stay. The log burner was such a welcomed extra and very fitting for the season. We were warm and comfortable with everything at hand (including extra logs). As usual, a warm welcome awaited us complete with our own christmas tree and wreath and bottle of bubbly in the fridge. Everything was taken care of. From booking and payment to locking up and leaving, our stay was excellent. Staying in Lagrasse ? It's got to be with Guy & Claire - thank you both so much.

Perfect, relaxing, tranquil

  • 5 of 5

A lovely, homely little oasis. The Owners Claire and Guy are so friendly and knowledgable about the area. We hired bikes from just around the corner, which is the best way to see this area, the roads are so quiet and safe, lots of river swimming in crystal clear waters. The local restaurants and cafes are brilliant never had a bad meal. Not a touristy area either(didn't feel it when we were there end of school holidays). Our apartment was the garden studio which was perfect, very french, clean and well equipped. Definately recommend this as a place to stay and Lagrasse as an area to explore and enjoy.

Owner's Response: Thank you for writing a review, we very much appreciate the time taken to do this. It was lovely to meet you both and it was great to see you explore the area on bikes - made Guy and me feel very unfit! Thanks for the tip on the swimming location. One we must try out with the boys. Good to hear that you enjoyed the local cafes and restaurants and staying in the Garden Studio. We wish you both the best. Kind regards Claire and Guy

With consistent temperatures in the mid to late 20's from May to September this part of Southern France has something to offer everyone, with its colourful landscape which changes dramatically through the seasons.

Lagrasse is situated just 30 minutes drive from Carcassonne and 40 minutes from Narbonne. Both these wonderful cities are steeped in history with many beautiful and interesting places to explore. Lagrasse has something for everyone - bars, restaurants, local artisan shops, local supermarkets and a boulangerie to name but a few. During the summer 'brocantes' are held where you will pick up all sorts of wonderful and quirky artifacts. There is a market every Saturday in the village square where fresh regional produce can be sampled and purchased. Throughout the year you will find many events are held in the village, live music and classical concerts such as En Blanc et Noir. During July a internationally renowned music festival is held that engulfs the entire village. There are of course fireworks and live music to celebrate Bastille Day on July the 14th and in August there is an international ‘Banquet du Livres’ situated within the old stone walls of the medieval banqueting hall All these lively and fun things will ensure a typically French atmosphere is found and most definitely enjoyed!

A two minute stroll up the main street will bring you to the tennis courts & the football & boules pitches. Sailing & windsurfing can be found 30 minutes drive away, so there is also something to occupy the more sporty! Skiing is only 2 hours away too. For those wanting a truly relaxing French village experience there is the pretty beach on the river Orbieu which is only a stone's throw away through the cobbled streets. Superb fishing is also found on this river & with the Canal de Midi close by, tranquil boat trips are a must. Wonderful walks can be found in and around the village which can be tailored to suit individual needs. So whether you are wanting an invigorating hike high up in the hills or a gentle stroll along the river bank this region walking will suit all. Cycling is a fun way to explore the cobbled streets of the village and the surrounding areas we have bikes available to use. The Tour de France passes nearby each year and the tree lined roads are filled with spectators who travel from around the globe to cheer the cyclists on their way! Within easy driving distance you will also find a myriad of Cathar castles and ruins to explore.

The beautiful beaches of Leucate, Gruissan and La Franqui are located approximately 35 minutes drive away and offer all you would expect from French seaside towns. Port Leucate and its weather conditions are perfect for wind surfing, bringing keen surfers from all over Europe to hop on their boards here! There are 2 fun Aqua parks located within an hour of the house and a pirate theme park in Gruissan. In Carcassonne and Leucate there are the O2 Aventura Parcs where older children and adults can test their climbing skills - and their head for heights - in the tree top adventure park. In Sigean there is an African Safari Park which plays host - to amongst other things - elephants, lions and rhinos.
