We're in London's historic Gibson Square, which is an oasis of calm just off of Islington's lively Upper Street, where you'll find literally dozens of upscale bars, restaurants and shops. We're convenient to the major bus and tube lines running quickly to all the sights and tourist attractions you'll want to visit in this great city. The flat is on the Ground and Lower Ground floors of a Regency terraced town house. Travel back in time with us: all sides of the Square, and the park inside it, look just as they did when George III was busy losing the Colonies. This quiet, cozy, comfortable holiday rental flat features high ceilings in the principal rooms, cornice mouldings, and the original butler-buffed wood floors. The furnishings feature elegant Georgian mahogany, polished English silver and brass, and Colefax & Fowler fabrics. The kitchen is very well-equipped for cooking the gourmet treats to be found in the abundant local markets. Children over 12 welcome. The Bus: Several key buses stop just three minutes from the house, giving convenient scenic access to all the museums, tourist sights, markets and historic neighbourhoods you'll want to see on your vacation, cheaper and often quicker than the tube. Unlike in most cities, here the bus is your friend, with its dedicated express lanes and incredibly low cost -- just £1.50 (or less) with the Oyster Card that you'll want to get the day you arrive! (OR, if your credit card is "contactless-enabled" -- as evidenced by four curved bars on the front, looking a bit like a radar signal -- then it IS your Oyster Card and you're good to roll. You get all the same benefits, like a £6.50 cap on your daily fares after which you ride free until midnight.)
Take the splendid double-decker #4 red bus to Sadlers Wells, St Paul’s Cathedral, the Millennium Bridge to the Tate Modern and Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, Fleet Street, Oxford Street shopping, Covent Garden and the West End theatres, and finally Waterloo Bridge across the River Thames to the South Bank (National Theatre, Royal Festival Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, British Film Institute, Hayward Gallery, the London Eye), Imax, Waterloo Station, and the Old Vic. The Tube and Rail System: It's just a 7-minute walk to the Angel Islington tube station (Northern Line, Zone 1) for quick connections throughout London – just 1 stop to the King's Cross / St Pancras transport hub for further tube connections, the Eurostar to Paris, and mainline trains to Scotland, the North of England, and Gatwick and Luton Airports. And yes, King's Cross does have a brick wall bearing the sign 'Platform 9 3/4".
It's a 10-minute walk to the Highbury & Islington tube station (Victoria Line) connecting to the Stansted (Airport) Express, and looping through Central London to Victoria Station with connections to all lines. Arsenal's Emirates football stadium is at Highbury, as are National Rail's overground North London and Northern City Lines. Canary Wharf, the Financial District and the 2012 Olympics heritage sites are quickly accessed from here as well.
Heathrow Airport, by the way, is best accessed by the 15-minute Heathrow Express train, which you get from Paddington Station, less than 20 minutes away by Uber or taxi.

Now retired, my partner and I now live our life-long dream of having four sweet homes and living in whichever strikes our fancy at a given time. Since the stock market crash of 2008, to cover the bills, all the properties are rented on HomeAway whenever we're not in them. Managing the rentals has turned into quite a pleasant, though very time consuming, new profession for us, wherein we meet (or at least correspond with) the loveliest people from all over the planet. We've had more than 400 guests in the past nine years, and not a single bad experience. Phew! And we have great local staff for each property, so each home is always up to our own high standards for comfort, cleanliness and beauty.
Before retiring in 2005, I spent more than 30 years working on Broadway and in London's West End -- first managing, then producing, big musicals (mostly) plus dozens of plays and concerts. I was part of the original productions of GODSPELL, DREAMGIRLS, LA CAGE AUX FOLLES, and many dozens more, and producer of the Broadway musicals The Who's TOMMY and JEKYLL & HYDE, to name a few. Broadway concerts include Bette Midler, Michael Crawford, Frank Sinatra and even a very elderly Josephine Baker (a New Year's Eve concert, at the Palace, of course), whose chateau is just down the road from our house in France.
My partner Bill Rosenfield was for many years what Time Magazine wrote of him: "RCA Victor's Man About Broadway". He produced more than 65 Original Cast Recordings -- just pick one up at home if you have one -- if it's from the 1990's or 2000's, his name is probably on it: CHICAGO, TOMMY, RAGTIME, CABARET, and on and on. Billy's now retired from that and actively engaged in his one true passion: writing plays. This new career is just budding, but already showing great progress. Until recently, he did most of his writing in a cute little shed at the bottom of the garden behind this flat. But now he has an office across town and the shed is all yours!

We love the Regency (late Georgian, pre-Victorian) architecture that is so prevalent in this part of town -- simple terraced houses with strict symmetry and Palladio's cube-and-a-half proportions which somehow create a great sense of calm, order and sophistication. Our house, on a perfectly-preserved square containing nothing but its original homes, features large windows and big open sky -- plus that pristine little park right across the square, with something in bloom every month of the year. And we greatly appreciate that very 'London' phenomenon, which is that all we hear is birdsong here in the Square, notwithstanding the fact that we're just a 90-second walk to the very busy Upper Street, which abounds with the kind of life and energy that only a world capital can offer.
Immerse yourself in real life here -- our neighbourhood isn't the least bit touristy, just a breath of energized fresh air among real Londoners. Google 'Islington' and just see what good stuff comes up!
This flat is our primary home, but we travel some 12 to 20 weeks per year now, so it's always got an opening for you. Sometimes we even coordinate our travel to suit our guests' timeframes. Thanks to a large walk-in "vault" under the sidewalk out front, we can remove every bit of our personal stuff in two hours, leaving all the cupboards, closets and bureaus dead empty for your own stuff. We rent HomeAway homes ourselves, and just hate it when the owners' clothes and desk clutter is lying around. NOT so in our flat, I assure you!
I returned to my London home, as I like to call it, for the second time and sincerely hope that it won't be the last.
Certainly a stay in Gary & Bill's apartment is not only about the stylish and comfortable setting.
It is a lot more than that. The prompt responses, the real care and understanding of my needs are greatly appreciated.
Admittedly I have not had many other stays in privately owned properties in London but now I prefer it to staying in a fancy hotel, especially for 2 weeks or longer.
I could not recommend this beautiful apartment any more but I am a bit 'selfish' and and would always like the opportunity to return.
Flat is beautifully decorated, outfitted, and location is all we could ask for in London. We were surrounded with more outstanding restaurants than we could possibly visit over three weeks. And transportation is readily available for nearly all spots we wanted visit. This flat is outfitted with luxury amenities only available in an owner's primary residence. My wife and I could not have been more satisfied in our home, if just for a three week moment, in London.
We had one week at the Gibson Square and we loved the garden. The accommodations were perfect for the four of us. It was situated in a great spot easy access to the tube and many, many great restaurants around the area. But we were both impressed by the attention Gary gave us answering emails and always being available to help us have a smooth holiday. If ever in London again, this is our place.
From the minute I walked into Gibson Square, I was enchanted. I love beautiful surroundings, and Gary's house was an immediate feast for the eyes: gorgeous and immaculate. Exquisite woodwork and rich colour on the walls, the old plank wood floors gleam, and everywhere you turn there's something to delight the eye. I wandered around admiring everything until exhaustion overtook me, and then sat down on a beautiful armchair that turned out to be so cosy I took a long nap in it one day after a long outing. I'd been traveling for several weeks by the time I arrived, and was thrilled to do the laundry - using a real tumble dryer! Gary's precise directions gave me clean and sweet smelling clothes again, in just a couple of hours while I drank my morning coffee. If you know England, you know how rare that is! Wonderful shower - I luxuriated every day. Can't testify to the television and electronics - I never turned them on! There are marvellous books to read, and If I could have lit the whole place by candlelight, I would have left the electric off, as well. But the lighting is so subtle and artistic, with dimmers on everything and thoughtful spotlights everywhere: the Georgian gentlemen in their frames on the walls, the gleam of silver trays, the sunlight through the leaves in the beautiful garden - it was almost the same thing. The beds were exquisitely comfortable, and the square is so quiet - especially being so close to Upper St. in Islington. Gary provides all the information you need on everything in the home and in the area. Go to Ottolenghi's for dinner and takeout - amazing food, and a great way to meet people at the long communal table. If you're a vegetarian like me, indulge at The Gate - lovely food and atmosphere. Take Gary's advice and use the buses - especially from the stop at St Mary's Church, just a short stroll away. I took buses everywhere - great way to learn neighbourhoods. In Islington, great Vietnamese and Thai food abound, as well as every kind of omnivore's delight. Take in a performance at the King's Head Theatre Pub - what a hoot! I wandered home at nearly 2 am and felt absolutely safe. After a long day out exploring, Gibson Square was always bliss to come home to. I had friends come to stay for a night, and the marvellous Maria was a godsend in getting us sorted for parking (which I hadn't even thought about). t absolutely loved it, and miss it, still. It was an incomparable experience, and I'll be back.
My wife and I travel frequently and have rented numerous properties through VRBO and I can honestly say we have never stayed at a more sublime home than Gary's Gibson Square town house. It is impeccably furnished by which I mean it is both attractive and comfortable, and has a well equipped kitchen. The shower, though small (it is England after all) works well and there is an efficient washer and dryer in a separate laundry room (a rare luxury in the UK). The paintings on the walls are really good, a rarity in rental properties. The flat is on a quiet, elegant square but only two blocks from Upper Street which is chock-a-block with restaurants, cafes, small theatres and upscale retailers. It's a short walk to the tube station, Boots, Marks and Spencer, Waitrose and Sainsbury. Best of all are Gary and Bill who are charming, responsive and concerned hosts. I could go on and on but just read the Gibson Square website: everything on it is true.
We could not have been happier with this flat. It was the perfect home base for our month in London; its convenient location made it easy to walk to shops, grocery stores, restaurants, and public transportation. The flat itself was beautiful and well-eqipped, and the garden sitting area was an added bonus. Gary, the owner, is very helpful and easy to work with and will respond quickly if you have a concern. Definitely recommend!
Ideally situated to explore London for a great city break, Islington itself is a hip, sophisticated destination on the northern edge of Central London, politically and aspirationally resembling Manhattan's upscale Upper West Side. The renowned Almeida Theatre and Kings Head Theatre Pub are just steps away, as are all the main supermarkets, plus endless boutiques and really fine food and antique shops. Stroll or jog along Regents Canal. Easy transport links, fine restaurants, gay friendly. You can even walk to the Eurostar terminal and day trip to Paris in luxury for £59 return !!
Local celebrities include James McAvoy, Lily Allen, Dido and, formerly, Vladimir Lenin, Heath Ledger and Sir Walter Raleigh. Gibson Square alone boasts an Oscar-nominated film composer, a Booker Prize-winning author, a renowned stage director, a nationally known comic and a Member of Parliament. Former neighbour Tony Blair formed New Labour with Gordon Brown in one of the Upper Street restaurants
Other Activities: Theater, theater, theater (or theatre, theatre, theatre!). Antiques, casinos, flea markets, designer clothes, you name it. HEY, it's London !!!
Golf: No golf here in central London, of course, but many of the nation's legendary courses are within an easy day-trip from the many train hubs easily accessible from our flat.

We have a formal Booking Agreement which you will find attached to your Invoice. Please do read it carefully, as it lays out many items of interest to you. When you click "Accept" and make your first payment, we will both be committed to the agreement described therein.
Please note that the flat is not suitable for pre-teens. Also, the entire building and front steps are absolutely no smoking. And much as we love a great dog, we just can't accept pets here.
There are no other charges whatsoever unless you decide to run up a large phone bill, or rent premium Movies or Sporting Events on our Sky Satellite TV system. If it takes Maria longer than 3 hours to clean the place after your departure, overtime will be deducted from your deposit at the rate of £15 per hour (but please note that this has NEVER yet happened!)
