Lovely apartment, incredible location

  • 5 of 5

A very comfortable and well-maintained apartment, but the location around the corner from the beach really makes this a must. Go and look at the beach often -- low-tide, high-tide, blustery, calm, cloudy, sunny, dawn, sunset, sea and sky always changing! Location was excellent for walking to restaurants and pubs in town. We'd rented a car (the apartment owners provided us with a parking permit), and the apartment was an excellent base for excursions to the Burns birthplace and museum, Cuzlean castle, and the ferry to Arran. Don't miss the Rozelle Center--terrific arts exhibits in a lovely park.

Quaint flat by the sea

  • 4 of 5

This little flat was our first experience staying on our own in another country. It took us a little time to work out the little idiosyncrasies, but we had it down by the end of our 3 day stay! You must know that the flat is literally a block from the sea and it is a short walk downtown to great restaurants. Our main goal was to explore the area and that we did. Much of the town (at least by the ocean) was closed and we are assuming that is because it was not summer. That was fine for us. The kitchen has a small refrigerator which worked for our few items that needed cooling. We did no cooking -- just had small breakfast items to start our day. We were usually out and about for the rest of our day.

I am giving my review 4 stars vs. 5 only because the flat was VERY chilly when we arrived. It took us awhile to figure out the heating system (definitely not what we are used to seeing) and then my husband had to override the program to get us warm on a consistent basis. If someone could have come over earlier (the lady who cleans/manages would really be ideal) to heat the place, there would be 5 stars. We were huddled in our coats and hats because it took a really long time for it to come to temp -- more than 24 hours. This is the only "bad" item we have. It is probably very unusual to have guests during that time of year so this is just something to be aware of.

If you have issues going up stairs, this is not the place for you. Stairs lead up to the flat, stairs lead down to the washer/dryer/utility room and there is quite a lip going through the front door. Not a problem for us...

We had a really great time seeing the sites around Ayr. It is beautiful country and we did not want to leave as soon as we did. Close by are Culzane Castle (grounds only this time of year -- beautiful) and Dunure Castle (a gorgeous cliffside ruin where we saw a fantastic sunset into the ocean). We made the journey to Caerlaverock Castle and felt it was worth the trip. Smith's and Saffy's had wonderful dinners!

Thank you for the use of your Quaint Flat by the Sea! We did have a fabulous time!!
