Beautifully restored 14th century Provencal village house near Vaison la Romaine

Lovingly restored, Provencal village house built into the ramparts of a medieval village, situated between the Mediterranean and the Alps, especially popular with the discerning traveller who enjoys quality accommodation with every modern convenience, history, cycling, walking, wine and food. The peaceful and beautiful village of Sablet is approximately a ten minute drive from the Roman town of Vaison la Romaine.

About Louise Nelson

Happily spending our time between two of the most beautiful places in the world, Sablet, France and Ballintoy on the Causeway Coast, N Ireland.

Both of us grew up in N Ireland and over latter years we holidayed in France where we have family connections. We enjoyed our trips so much that we started to search for a potential holiday home. After a couple of years search and continually being drawn to this one property, we finally put in an offer and were overjoyed when it was accepted approximately ten years ago.

As we were often at home in N Ireland, initially due to work commitments, we decided that there was an opportunity for holiday lets. Our business has grown over this time and we have many guests who return year after year.

Three years ago we were lucky enough to acquire a second holiday rental property back home in N Ireland. We purchased a beach side cottage in the popular harbour village of Ballintoy, situated between the famous Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge and The Giants Causeway.

Two very different parts of the world, not least of all the contrasts of weather, however, each having it's own charm.

Why Louise Nelson chose Sablet

We viewed this property several years ago and were blown away by the views (180 deg plus) which was the predominant reason for making the purchase. Upon arrival and without exception, guests are taken aback by the vista. The quality of the recent renovation - the house was lovingly rebuilt from a ruin by a committed German couple, as can be seen in the quality of amenities, fixtures and fittings, this was our second reason. Last but certainly not least, the picturesque, medieval, village itself. We visited an antique market in Sablet several years ago where we purchased an old French chair which was shipped back to N Ireland - we liked the atmosphere and location of the village, rural France but close to road, rail and air infrastructure for sight-seeing and travelling. We felt it was just right!

What makes this house unique

Location, location, location! This spacious village property offers guests a piece of French history, tastefully furnished with all the conveniences of modern life. High ceilings, large rooms, wide staircase, four terraces with unrivalled views, three living areas, five bedrooms, three bathrooms with roomy walk-in showers and cloakroom toilet. Room for families and couples alike with space for privacy when the need arises.

Guests who arrive are blown away by the views that are so difficult to capture in image. On one occasion we were offered more rental such was the reaction of one traveller to the view!

Guests love the house and it's spaciousness. The kitchen and it's appliances are second to none for a rental property. I have food writers and critics come to stay to prepare meals from the Provencal produce purchased at the market and served on one of the two adjacent terraces to the kitchen.

Many a glass of Cote du Rhone wine has been enjoyed as we soak up the view of the sunset in the hot, dry, climate from the library terrace.

Depending on budget and party size you can rent our apartment with the garden leading onto La Place des Barrys, the top unit with three bedrooms and four terraces or for larger parties the whole house approached from Grande Rue. Price will depend on numbers in party and season of year. Advertised price is a guide only.

On occasions John and I will be in residence if only part of the property is let, specifically, Summer and Autumn.

Admission up front: we are long time and relentless Francophiles, having visited France on more than 40 separate vacations commencing in 1972 and continuing nearly yearly thereafter and sometimes several times a year. About 20 years back we began to rent apartments or houses from which we pursued circular tours of the vicinity for segments of a week or multiple weeks (including two sabbaticals where we were in France for 2 to 4 months). We found that the exceptional convenience of unpacking only once or twice and the space afforded by renting far eclipsed hotel stays and allowed for our passion to cook in our rental property as well as visit a variety of local restaurants noted for the pleasure of dining there. During all that time, we never stayed in a place we enjoyed more than yours. Our latest visit to Sablet was our 4th to that immediate area. The town is as typical, picturesque and enjoyable as any small Provencal wine town can boast. But it is the home itself that is the highlight. The views from the 4 terraces of the house (set at the points of the compass) allow one to pick the view and the sun direction one desires at the moment. The views from the main terrace are to the north and west over an immense distance of some of the most attractive vineyards that France has to offer. The house itself is near the top of the hill crowning the village and the general views are spectacular. The village has all the amenities available that a visitor could want and the immediate area provides a rich and varied choice of restaurants ranging from simple bistro style dining to epicurean delights. The rooms are cool and spacious with high ceilings. The bathrooms (rarely notable in much of France), have all been reconstructed to a very high standard as has the whole house over a span of nearly 20 years. The most distinguished component is the updated kitchen (with everything needed supplied), next to the main spectacular terrace that affords an ideal place for outdoor dining amid a profusion of beautiful flowering shrubs There is even a locked garage. But it is the English speaking owners and the local property manager that impressed us the most. Their combined input on local attractions and kindly hospitality is a huge plus. We certainly intend to return periodically to Sablet if Les Quattre Terrasses is available going forward. We recommend it as one of the very best we have ever visited in all our numerous trips to France.

Children are welcome but must be supervised at all times particularly on terraces especially if they are inclined to climb! Small, well-trained, family pets only will be considered and must at all times be kept within the boundaries of the house, garden or terraces. Smoking is only permitted on either of the four terraces or the garden. For the short swimming pool season, there are two public swimming pools at Beames de Venise where, for a couple of euros, you can enjoy a swim, however, morning is best for the serious swimmers. Located off the main car park. (Distance 11 km). This property is for the serious cook with a well equipped kitchen fitted with high quality Gaggenau appliances.

This property in Sablet is to die for.

This was our second time at this property. After our short first visit we fell in love with the four terraces, spacious facility and well appointed kitchen so had to come back. Louise and John are caring hosts who answer all questions and are very amenable to all requests. If you need them they are there but respect your privacy and space. They are so pleasant to deal with which only increased our desire to come back. They treat you like family.

Sablet is perfectly situated to explore the Vaucluse. With short drives you can visit so many places like Gigondas, Vaison, Crestet, Cairanne, Rasteau, Roaix, Chateauneuf de Pape, Tavel, Lyrac, Pont D'Arc, Avignon and many other environs all within an hour drive or less. If you use the highways you can even explore further in a day. Of course for us it is being surrounded by world class wine villages and of course provencal markets every day of the week to people watch.

Our first visit was only 4 days and we left feeling deprived so this trip booked for 12 and treated the Sablet rental as a Canadian cottage where we go to re-create and ponder the wonders of the world. With more days to explore we weren't rushed or harried in the least. Of course having excellent fall weather helped. We missed the scorching heat of the summer and left before the French fall weather moved in.

Highly recommend this location and its owners.

Not sure when but we will be back.

Sablet, we will be back!

This was our third year in Sablet and the second time we stayed in this house.

And we already have booked for next year.

What more can I say that will recommend this holiday home.

First, Sablet is a perfect village to spend the summer holiday.

It is quiet but has all things needed at hand and when you are willing to drive around a little, there is enough to see and do for everybody.

The house itself is perfect.

In our first year, we stayed in 'Le petit Jardin' because we were planning a holiday for 2.

However, during our stay my son, his wife and little daughter came over and stayed with us.

There was enough room available and we all enjoyed this very much.

This year, since the family had grown to a party of 6, we rented 'Les Quatre Terrasses'.

An ideal environment for a group of 2 young children with their parents and some elderly people.

It is very spacious and has enough room to enjoy some quiet moments, if wanted.

The kitchen is very well equipped and offers all the space needed.

The four terraces all give a different view on the surrounding and the village of Sablet.

Our hosts, Louise and John, stayed in 'Le petit Jardin' during our holiday.

They make you feel very welcome, are never in the way and are available when needed.

In short, a very fine holiday home, we are looking forward to our stay in 2018.

Good House, Bad Surprises

Les Quatre Terrasses consists of two separate rental units; the house and the basement apartment. My wife and I rented the 2-bedroom house for three weeks in October, 2016 during which the owners occupied the basement apartment. The house and its furnishings are very nice and the owners were hospitable and helpful. There were, however, a couple of surprises.

The first surprise came before we left home but after we were financially committed (final payment, airfare, train fare and rental car) when we learned that we really hadn’t rented a 2-bedroom house, but rather the house with only one useable bedroom. And if we wanted to accommodate visitors for a few days (which we did) we would have to pay a substantial additional fee (in cash) for use of that second bedroom. Over the past few decades, my wife and I have rented 14 vacation houses across the U.S. and Europe, including 3 other houses in Sablet. They were all multi-bedroom/multi-bath houses and there was never any discussion about notifying the owners that friends would be visiting or paying extra to accommodate them. Since we were financially committed and had extended the invitation to our friends, we had no choice but to succumb and agree to the extra cost.

The second surprise came when we arrived at the house and saw that the common staircase connecting the 3 floors of the house extended down to the basement apartment with no door separating the two rental units. Anyone occupying the basement unit can enter the house unit by simply walking up the stairs. It became clear that we hadn’t really rented a house; we had rented some of the rooms in a house. This is not made clear in the description of the house and had we known that beforehand, we wouldn’t have rented it.

And by the way, the house has a clothes washer but the clothes drier included in the description of the house is a wire stretched across one of the terraces.

If we return to Sablet for a fifth visit, it won’t be to Les Quatre Terrasses.

Owner's Response: Gracious of you taking the time to write a review. Thank you for your kind comments regarding our hospitality, helpfulness and quality of accommodation. We very much appreciated meeting Mary and her taking the time to call with us, not only to say goodbye and thank us for her stay, but to assure us she would recommend our holiday home to her friends. The Rental Contract was agreed at a heavily discounted rate for TWO adults and deposit paid December 2015 with balance paid after a hiccup August 2016, both via HomeAway payment system. After an uncomfortable discussion, a supplement was agreed for an additional two people - you TOLD me you would ‘pay 150 euros cash’. (For future reference, holiday home owners pay Taxe de Sejour based on number of adults x number of nights x rate - sorry to disappoint, people cannot just randomly turn up as intimated in your review). Our rental quotes are based on, season, section of the house booked and number of guests. This pricing strategy facilitates smaller parties, like yourselves, who wish to have 2,000 sq ft space, living rooms, dining area, four terraces, laundry room (dryer in vented area - available to all) sleeping for six persons, ensuites, dressing areas etc. This booking flexibility is working with much success despite the open stairwell, as we never let out to two parties simultaneously (note other reviews). We, the owners, may or may not be present during a reservation but as a recent reviewer highlights, if we are, we are ‘always respectful of privacy and space’. I understood our access into you ‘space’ was welcome given the number of times you knocked on our apartment door to ask for assistance with the remote control and lighting the wood burning stove. Once again, I am confused, however, I apologise if our presence was actually unwelcome. Within forty eight hours of your arrival, I detected your ‘unhappiness’, vented through an embarrassing verbal outburst over an emergency telephone call made from our stairwell. I immediately offered you a FULL refund as well as assistance to find more suitable accommodation in the village. My offer was unfortunately declined which would have been the better solution for both parties, given this additional outburst in the form of, a not unexpected, scathing review. Overall a most unpleasant experience and certainly not one we would ever wish to repeat! I am reminded of the words of R Burns 'Gathering his brows like gathering storm, Nursing his wrath to keep it warm.'

A most incredible stay in a beautiful home in a wonderful village in Provence

Our stay at Quatre Terraces was beyond any expectation. Louise and John, the owners of the home, are very friendly and helpful. Louise always responded to my many questions in writing both when I first inquired about the home and after we decided to rent it but had not yet stayed there. She answered each question in a very thorough, detailed manner. Upon our arrival into the town of Sablet, we were a bit lost and so John immediately drove his car to where we were and had us follow him to the home. Louise and John were never intrusive but we enjoyed our talks with them when we saw them.

Now to the home itself: PERFECT! What a beautiful home in a great village! My husband and I stayed for a week with another couple. We stayed on different floors of the house, each having a beautiful bedroom, wonderful bathroom and a magnificent view of the surrounding countryside. The kitchen was beautifully designed with high quality appliances and cabinetry and a big dining table and it was equipped with all that anyone would need. The library and living room were also comfortable rooms in which to relax. The highlight however is the QUATRE TERRACES. We walked into the village most mornings and bought delicious pastry at the boulangerie and neighboring grocery store and then ate our breakfasts on two of the terraces off of the kitchen and living room and also enjoyed late afternoon cocktails on the terrace off of the library. There is also a small fourth terrace off of the bedroom on the top floor in which those people staying in that room can enjoy. The view from each terrace of the surrounding countryside, neighboring hilltop village of Seguret and of homes in the village was absolutely breathtaking. While it is a very old home that is a part of the village ramparts, it has been totally updated and furnished beautifully. We loved the tile floors, light colors and beautifully decorated rooms.

Our hope had been to experience life in a beautiful home in a small old village in Provence where there were few tourists ( no one spoke English in the village--this is a "real" French village). Sablet is such a town and Les Quatre Terraces is perfect!

Fabulous Luxury and Value in Rhone Wine Country

From initial contact to check out our hosts, John and Louise were tremendously helpful and friendly.

They answered all our questions promptly and even stocked our kitchen prior to our arrival on a Sunday when the local markets were closed!

Les Quatre Terraces is a fantastic place for couples travelling together. There is plenty of space for everyone, all amenities needed for gourmet meals along with multiple options for dining nearby. The place was immaculate and no detail was overlooked. We feel lucky to have found such a great place.

I strongly recommend this amazing home!

Everything as advertised, an excellent experience.

We stayed two weeks with some friends and family. Caroline, the property manager took very good care of us. The facilities were far and away above expectations. We have ties to the area and this will be our first choice for accommodations in the future.

Enjoy the traditions of French village life in Sablet, in the heart of the Cote du Rhone wine growing region, approx .9 km from Vaison-la-Romaine, where you can soak up the market atmosphere every Tuesday morning. Walk to the picturesque village of Seguret, stop for a tasting at one of the renowned Sablet Wineries. Explore the well known neighbouring villages - Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, Vacquyras and Beaumes de Venise! All your daily needs can be met in the village: bakeries, butcher, grocery store, fish market (Thursday morning), newsagent, pharmacy, tobacconist (gifts), bank and post office. Enjoy an aperitif, coffee or lunch in the cafe, a simple meal in the restaurant in the square or, for those special occasions, some typical Provencal cuisine in Les Abeilles. The major 'fete' held in July is the 'Journee du Livre' or book fair, a two day event, hosted by the residents of Sablet, when well known authors from all over France come to the village.
