About Jon Young

Owners Jon & Helene have been in hospitality for over 20 years. Jon is a restaurateur & chef, and Helene is an international flight attendant and spent over a decade as a Chicago Architectural Foundation river cruise docent.

Why Jon Young chose Chicago

We have been neighborhood residents for 15 years and have not only enjoyed raising a family while seeing a positive transformation of Chicago during that time, but also of the Roscoe Village neighborhood and its amenities. We own and operate two award-winning and acclaimed restaurants here, and realized we had the ideal setting for a bed & breakfast style vacation rental conveniently located right in the heart of our community.

What makes this apartment unique

While staying at Sopra Volo (means 'above Volo' in Latin), guests have immediate access to more than a dozen dining options to fit any budget, pretty sidewalk cafes & hidden backyard garden patios, as well as unique independently owned retail shops & boutiques (also a Starbucks on our block housed in a converted former Motorcycle Cafe 'The Ace Cafe').

Within blocks there are family friendly parks, a baseball diamond, public pool, and a park district field house (offering tennis courts & a basketball court), as well as kayaking nearby.

The neighborhood is extremely walk-able, upper-middle class and safe, has seen a wave of renovations over the last decade, and just two blocks away there is a 100+ year old Pencil Factory that has been converted to lofts, with original factory-worker row houses still intact located on adjacent blocks.

Public transportation is easy from Sopra Volo and includes the Damen bus just steps out the front door (a direct 10 minute ride to the heart of Bucktown & Wicker Park), Chicago's famous 'EL' train at the Paulina stop just three blocks away, plus the Belmont or Addison (direct to Wrigley Field- Home of the Cubs) Street Bus just two blocks away.

If you visit us in the summer, Wrigley Field is just a 15-20 minute walk (about a mile and a half) through residential neighborhoods and tree lined streets, filled with 100 year old plus houses.

Finally, the guest suite is located directly above our acclaimed wine bar, Volo. It is beautifully designed with an urban chic interior and rustic hidden backyard cabana garden in which we from time to time host weddings. Advance VIP reservations are available to Sopra Volo guests on request. Additionally, the unit is located directly across the street from our celebrated casual brunch spot, Kitsch'n on Roscoe. Decked out in colorful 1970's retro dinette sets, and filled with assorted retro and vintage decor, Kitsch'n has been featured in Bon Apetit Magazine and on $40 a Day with Rachel Ray.

Adorable Apartment in a Great Location!

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic stay at this big, bright, adorable apartment in Roscoe Village! The location is amazing - right above Volo Wine Bar on Roscoe & N. Damen, on of the main intersections in the neighborhood. (Although despite the central location it was never loud in the apartment.) The balcony is large and overlooks the street - a GREAT place to hang out during the summer. Check in and out was super and easy and the owner, whom we happened to meet downstairs (he owns the wine bar) was very friendly and helpful.

The place is clean and comfy, well stocked and decorated. The kitchen is small but well equipped for cooking (although I don't know why anyone would want to cook with all the great restaurants within walking distance). The Queen bed was quite comfortable and the pullout couch was fine for my son.

This is a very family friendly, quiet but fun neighborhood. The public transportation is great, although we did rent a car. Street parking is easy to find within a block of the apartment.

Whatever brings you to Chicago, you will feel like home at this apartment. I know we will be staying there again!

Nice Stay in Roscoe Village

  • 5 of 5

My daughter and I had a nice visit as we moved her into Northwestern. This was our first stay in the penthouse loft and it was very nice. We spent some nice time on the loving deck overlooking Roscoe on some lovely September evenings. Nice kitchen and furnishings.

We also had another killer breakfast at Kitsch'n on Roscoe. Those are the best hash browns I've every had!

Parking is pretty easy on the side streets. We had no troubles. It was about a 30 min ride to Evanston and the traffic wasn't too bad.

Roscoe Village - My kind of town in Chicago

  • 5 of 5

The apartment was spacious yet cozy and we enjoyed the rooftop deck for unwinding with a cocktail after a long day of touring the sites and interesting neighbourhoods throughout the city. Very comfortable queen bed and great shower for tired wanderers. Getting to the L or the bus going down to the Loop was super close. We walked to Wrigley many times for music events and Jon was so kind to offer to help us with some ticketing we arranged onsite. A funky vibe at Kitsch’n On Roscoe was a delicious and fun way to start the day too. Great restaurants and a friendly neighbourhood to "live" in like a local. So much fun to be had in Roscoe Village!

Charming taste of northside neighborhood life

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Jon's Volo Penthouse for 3 nights in mid August. I can't recommend it enough.

We were in town for 3 Cub's games. After having been to Chicago dozen's of times, we've had enough of the downtown Loop, Magnificent Mile, and River North craziness. This charming apartment in Roscoe Village was exactly what we were looking for.

The unit is just as described - it's on the 3rd floor above the Volo Wine Bar. You do have to go up a couple flights of stairs including a spiral staircase, but that was no big deal. We enjoyed the patio a ton our whole trip.

The rental comes with gift cards for both Volo (Thanks for the wine and the great company Jon!) and Kitsch'n across the street. We enjoyed both.

Big shoutout to Kathleen and Jon for allowing us to store our bags on checkout day before our late flight. That was a lifesaver and allowed us to enjoy our Sunday.

Our little slice of the city!

  • 5 of 5

We love this apartment -- it's cozy and in a quiet corner of the busy North Neighborhoods. This is our second time staying here. We love coffee in the mornings on the rooftop. There are many great shops and restaurants nearby - and an easy walk to the train to get wherever we wanted to go. Just enough space to relax! We'll be back!

Nice location, needs a little attention

  • 4 of 5

Overall, we enjoyed our stay here. Positives: location above wine bar/restaurant and close to other great restaurants and Wrigley Field; good layout; private deck; awesome air conditioning; and help from Kathleen with a few questions. There's also lots of natural light but summer renters may want to know that they will be up with the sun due to the skylights and sheer curtains. Negatives: We agree with the other reviewer that the decorative wood flooring on the deck is unsafe and needs to be replaced, as well as the wood bench; the lockbox was difficult to use; no fresh soap in the shower; and only 3 towels for 3 people for 3 nights. We would stay here again if those things were taken care of.
