Description

Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday chateau / country house in Cragsmoor

Country House, 3 Bedrooms + Sunroom, 2.5 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

Cragsmoor, a tiny mountain-top hamlet on the Shawangunk Ridge 1800 feet up in the the Shawangugk Mountains is a magical place. Now listed in the National Register of Historic Places, the hamlet is an oasis of calm and natural wonder less than two hours from New York City.

Many of the buildings in the district date to Cragsmoor’s founding as an art colony in the late 19th century, where Hudson River School Painters were inspired.

Our pristine home, The Crows Nest, is one of these original stone and cedar homes, restored with care not to lose the original “Cragsmoor feel”. The centerpieces of the house are the massive stone fireplace, the Orchard porch and stone patio which wrap around the house and the fully renovated kitchen with sliding glass doors which open to the apple trees outside. The Bear Hill cliffs and nature preserve are a 5 minute walk from the house.

Our 2300 square foot home sleeps 6. There is a master queen bedroom with views, a full guest room with views of the orchard and 2 twin beds in a room with views . The great room upstairs also has a pull out couch. One bathroom has a shower. Another bathroom is conveniently located downstairs off the kitchen.

The kitchen features Vermont slate floors, a Thermador double oven and cook top, a Rancillo espresso machine, a large kitchen table, dishwasher and full complement of All Clad cookware.

Breakfast lunch or dinner on the porch is hard to beat. Overlooking our tiered orchard of apple and cherry trees, it is the perfect place to swing on the hammock or enjoy pancakes full of blueberries picked on the Ridge the day before.

For music lovers we have a Baltimore Knabe grand piano situated by a picture window with a view of the meadow below. The large Tree Room upstairs has cathedral ceilings, a foosball table and windows on all sides that literally put you “in the woods” when you relax there.

Cragsmoor is a place of special natural beauty. It is home to pristine and protected hiking and cross-country ski trails, the premier hang-gliding launch on the East Coast, streams with waterfalls and quiet paths.

Cragsmoor is a 2-hour drive from New York City, and 40 minutes from New Paltz.

About letizia gentile

We have raised our family at this house on weekends year-round. We drive up from NYC on the weekends to relax with family and friends. Our children spent most of their weekends here growing up and enjoying the outdoors with other families. We have many many memories of times in Cragsmoor and look forward to many more.

Why letizia gentile chose Hudson Valley

Create memories with family and friends.

We wanted a place to relax that was close to NYC and had a small community feel. Cragsmoor is a tiny hamlet of artists, musicians, nature lovers and outdoors types that provides a sense of community. Our house is a renovated original historic Dellenbaugh house. Beautiful wood floors and views from every room.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

We have entertained many guests here over the years who have come to love our house and look forward to returning year after year. You can walk to the Bear Hill cliff area in 5 minutes. You can get on a bike or a pair of skis and leave the property for the day returning to cook a big meal and relax on the porch. The kitchen is great for cooking and the piano provides a nice touch for people who play.

Terrific Home for a Gathering of Family and Friends in the Cragsmoor Area!

  • 5 of 5

We rented this home for a family gathering and it exceeded our expectations. We were five adults and the house was a real joy from the moment we pulled in the driveway until we locked the door on our way out at the weekend's end.

The house is very welcoming and comfortable. Some of us spent hours cooking meals in the kitchen, which was very well equipped for a rental home and had great appliances, if somewhat limited counter-top space, while others either enjoyed the very inviting fireplace in the living room or took in some sun and nature on the porch. Both the living room and the porch are adjacent to the kitchen. So, you are never too far away from the action.

There is a comfy T.V. room upstairs, but we never did figure out how to get the channel playing the Cleveland Indians game (a lead-up to the grueling World Series, ultimately lost last night in a nail-biter) . Rather than call Leticia (owner), who was available and receptive to any questions we might have, we took advantage of the house’s Wi-Fi and listened to the game on internet radio. It was such a fun throw-back. I think we enjoyed the Cleveland win that night all the more, as a result.

Bedrooms and linens were very comfortable. Although, having an en-suite bathroom between 2 bedrooms may be slightly quirky, it was a non-issue for our group. Like many older country homes, walls/floors are pretty thin and you can hear other activity in the house, but that did not bother us either.

Foliage was almost peak during our visit and we enjoyed our hikes/walks around Cragsmoor and the Bear Hill Preserves.

Leticia was a terrific host. She was clear and helpful with pre-visit instructions. She surprised us with welcoming gifts of freshly cut wild flowers, local apples (which we baked up in a pie) and fresh cider - very much appreciated. While we did not have many questions, she was prompt to answer them by text, both before and during our stay. She was also kind enough to send us a text mid-stay to make sure that we were aware of the sighting potential of an impending full moon. We took her advice and, that evening, enjoyed a fire in the outdoor fire pit, in the bright moonlight.

We had a fantastic family visit, made all the more enjoyable, because of the comfortable accommodations. I would recommend this house to any close group that wishes to spend some time together in the Cragsmoor area. We loved it and intend to return.

Thank you!

Charming house and peaceful location

  • 5 of 5

A very charming house that's full of wonderful character. It was very clean and has a well stocked kitchen.

The Cragsmoor area is beautiful and very very quiet. This is what we were after, but don't go here expecting to wonder down to a cafe or shops, there are none in the town.

The owner is super helpful. We booked for the wrong dates and only realised a few days before. She changed the dates with no fuss. And then the owner even offered if we wanted to change weekends because of poor weather.

Quaint house nestled in woods.

  • 4 of 5

Beautiful setting nestled in the woods. Quaint old home with warmth and charm.

Very hospitable owner . Cozy rooms, with luxury linens and towels. Spacious kitchen and den/living area. Spacious and relaxing porch.

On downside. Very steep stairs, poorly lit Maste,Den, driveway/ entry.

I would recommend this place for younger Family group, not seniors.

Beautiful area

  • 3 of 5

Pros: the area is very serene and picturesque. The decor is very cute and the beds were comfortable. Would probably be great for anyone staying a short while but we stayed for a month and worked from home so it didn't meet all of our needs.

Cons: the lack of AC in August was miserable. The owner kindly provided a window unit but it meant we spent most of our time in one room. The two twins bedroom is through the master which is not a great layout for adults and is not mentioned in the description, the second queen room is rather small. The house is settling so some of the doors stick or the doorknobs do not work etc. The kitchen has very little counter-space for cooking but the stove was fantastic. There were a fairly large amount of bugs, spiders and such.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. Thank you for your comments about our décor. This has been our weekend home for a long time and we have renovated it with care. This has been an unusually hot August for the Shawangunk Mountain Range. However I was happy to supply you with an air conditioner to accommodate your needs. We have a kitchen table that comfortably seats 8, which could be used for additional food prep. I take personal pride in the level of cleanliness in my home. It is a country home and an occasional spider or ant does get in.

Peaceful unique house in wonderful location

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed in this house 3 times now - in spring, summer and fall - and each time has been wonderful. The house has a lot of character and feels loved and lived in, but it is very comfortable with good heating, nice beds and linens etc. It has large dining tables both inside and on the porch, perfect for big long meals. It also has a really well equipped kitchen with a big 5 burner gas cooktop, double electric oven, espresso maker, lots of great pans etc. The porch has a nice view with the garden stepping down. There is a fireplace in the living room, and nice wood floors, and a beautiful grand piano. It is so quiet, you will only see one or two cars pass in the whole day, and barely an airplane in the sky. The air is wonderful, and stars very visible at night as there is no light pollution around. You can walk to Bear Hill which has a fantastic view, in about 20 minutes, and to Cragsmoor library and the beautiful Stone Church. We also hiked in Minnewaska state park, to the waterfall, to Lake Awosting and at Sam's point. Easy to book and the house was open and clean when we arrived, and Kathleen was helpful with information about the area. Definitely would recommend this place!
