Traditional cottage with pool in rural location

Bedrooms 1
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 6 nights

Photos and Description of this 1 bedroom holiday cottage in North Portugal - Casa da Fonte

Close to forest walks, sandy beaches and Spanish border

Built in 1868 the granite stone cottage has been sympathetically restored and retains many original features, including the open beamed ceiling and shutters.

Overlooking the rural hamlet of Tarrio, the property has stunning views across a river valley to the mountains beyond. The cottage is adjacent to the farmhouse where the owner lives and has a private patio with lemon tree and rustic barbecue. The pool and surrounds( occasionally shared with the owner) overlooks terraces of lawn, flowers and vegetable gardens that guests are welcome to explore. Car-parking is available under shady vines that are still used to produce wine on the property.

The accommodation is laid out as an open plan studio and has a double bed plus sofa beds suitable for children. In winter there is a cosy wood-burning stove and a fan is available for the summer months. The well-equipped kitchen has a gas hob/oven/grill and a microwave. The bathroom is spacious and modern with a thermostatic shower, wc, bidet and wash-basin.

The cottage has free wi-fi coverage and the flatscreen TV is connected to a satellite receiving all UK channels. There is also a DVD and music system.

There are many tracks for walking and mountain-bike riding leading from the property and the owner has bicycles for guest use. In the old stables of the farmhouse there is a games room with a table tennis table, table-top football, boules and badminton equipment, and a paper-back library.

There is a shared laundry area with washing machine, tumble dryer and iron for guest's use.

The local town of Paredes de Coura is 6km away and has a river swimming area, shops, cafes, restaurants and a Saturday market. In addition to the forest and village walks on your doorstep and the property is ideally situated to explore the coast and it's sandy beaches, the market towns of the Minho/Lima valleys or the Peneda-Geres National Park. The Spanish border is 30 mins and Porto airport is 1 hr drive away.

Canoeing/Kayaking: The owner has details of canoes for hire on the River Lima and River Minho. The canoeing is suitable for beginners and children.

About Mike Wild

Moved to Portugal from the UK in 2005 to enjoy the peace, climate, lush countryside and uncrowded beaches of the Costa Verde. The friendly, relaxed attitude of the local population and the lower cost of living were also major factors.

Now retired, I spend my time gardening and looking after the property, cycling and kite-surfing, and of course, making sure our guests have a wonderful holiday!

Mike Wild purchased this cottage in 2005

Why Mike Wild chose North Portugal

I love the character that comes with an old granite built property - and it keeps nice and cool in the summer. The view from the pool across the valley is stunning and although we are in a peaceful unspoilt location, we are only a few minutes drive from the local market town of Paredes de Coura

What makes this cottage unique

A large, virtually private pool (as only occasionally shared with owner and wife) and well-maintained terraced gardens of 3,000 sq metres.

Peaceful - apart from the church bells, and the occasional tractor working in the fields below.

Well-located to access

-the coast and a range of beautiful sandy beaches

- the Peneda -Geres National Park

-the Spanish border and coastal resorts

-the historic towns of Ponte de Lima, Braga, Guimaraes

My 7-months pregnant wife and I came over for a pre-baby week of relaxation and quality time, and the Casita fitted the bill perfectly. Casa da Fonte is a perfect combination of traditional buildings and gardens with modern levels of equipment, comfort and convenience. Everything is in excellent condition. The casita consists of one very large room for sleeping, living and eating, plus a seperate shower room off to the side, with access to the private courtyard - a perfect amount of space for a couple and maybe 1 or 2 small children. The spacious pool area looks out over the terraced garden and vines, into the valley below.

The local hills and valleys are great for exploring, with ancient lanes and pathways, abandoned water mills and ruins, local smallholders with their traditional tools, waterfalls and abundant wildlife. These are best explored on foot or by mountain bike. Mike was an excellent guide on 2 wheels, taking me down some challenging and scenic trails while giving me the benefit of his detailed local knowledge!

Getting into the car, there are plenty of good days out within easy driving distance - I particularly liked visiting Ponte de Lima for the Roman bridge and exploring the interesting back streets and the Gil Eannes hospital ship in Viana do Castelo (we were going to go to the beach, but never quite made it!); also the fortress in Valenca, looking across the Minho river to Spain. My wife enjoyed a day in the spa at Moncao, which is fed with warm spring water from the nearby hills.

Other highlights were: the wood-burning stove; drinking Alvarinho in the sunny courtyard with a good book (if you run out, the games room has a good stock, of books that is); entering the 'Draftzone' mountain bike event at Melgaco; eating local salt cod dishes; travelling on the scenic and almost deserted local roads.

I'd recommend the Casita to any couple looking for a relaxing getaway in tranquil surroundings that are great fun to explore.

Rural Portugal

  • 5 of 5

A lovely place to stay with extremely welcoming and friendly owners; Mike and Maria were only too happy to provide information, recommendations, practical help and delicious garden produce. The house is very comfortable and well appointed. Outside space and pool are immaculate and very relaxing. We found lots to do and visit within a short drive. The cycling and walking in the immediate area opens up a very beautiful part of the country. We loved the area and the accommodation and will definitely return sometime soon.

House in Northern Portugal

  • 5 of 5

The property is very comfotable in a beautiful and quiet part of northern Portugal. The area is good for walking and cycling and there are many beautiful towns and villages to visit. The views from the property are good and one can relax by the side of the swimming pool. The property has many amenities such that one could spend quite a lot of time there. There is a town nearby which has restaurants and shops. The property was well maintained and clean and the hosts were very welcoming. I would certainly recommend this property to those people wishing to stay in a quiet and beautiful area.

We have just returned from ten days at this wonderful spot. Don't be fooled about the size - this property is really spacious - even the bathroom. Everything is in beautiful order and Mike and Maria have thought of everything that you could possibly need for your stay to be comfortable. The pool is just lovely and always spotlessly clean - not very deep so great for people like me and youngsters. Plenty of sunbeds which can be arranged to give the stunning view over the surrounding countryside. The area is extremely scenic and there are plenty of very interesting places to visit within a short drive. In fact, as we had a suitable cloudy day, we took the longer trip into Spain and visited Santiago de Compostela, which is well worthwhile, even if you are not religious.

We must confess, some of the roads are somewhat winding but most of all in pretty good condition. Thus it does take a little longer than you think to get anywhere - a good map and a sat-nav are helpful. We can highly recommend this property and hope to return soon.

Holiday in the sun

  • 5 of 5

We were warmly welcomed by Mike and Maria on arrival to their delightful home and beautiful garden. The Casita had everything that we needed for our comfort and a truly relaxing holiday and the pool was a delight. Maria very generously also shared some of her home grown produce. Our intention was to do little and recharge and that is exactly what we did. Lots of places to eat out and sample the local wines and plenty to explore if that was what you wanted to do. Perhaps next time?? Hoping to return.

Mountain Idyll

  • 5 of 5

My husband, 7 year old daughter and I booked this lovely cottage for a much needed break in the May half term this year.

The cottage is beautiful, clean and equipped with everything a family needs on a trip away. The location is stunning. We returned home with a hundred pictures of the view from the pool across to the mountains!

We were blessed with great weather during our stay and made full use of the pool, badminton court and games room. The games room is packed full of things to keep you occupied should the weather not be so good. My family took great delight in showing off their table tennis or table football skills. There is a good selection of reading material available should the family games become too competitive and you wish time out on your own.

My daughter particularly liked exploring Mike and Maria's vast terraced gardens and was excited to find a tree house and swing in the wooded area below. Mike and Maria take great time and care with their garden and it is full of beautiful flowers and produce. My daughter loved learning about gardening from Maria and she has now planted some vegetables back at home following her advice.

We used the property as a base to explore Northern Portugal. We visited Ponte de Lima, Caminha, Moncao and even popped into Spain for the day. My daughter loved telling her friends that she went on holiday to Portugal and Spain.

Mike and Maria were the perfect hosts. Maria provided us with fresh produce from her garden everyday of our stay. Her black current jam is to die for! They really have thought of everything to ensure that you have a perfect stay. You go there having booked a cottage with them and come away feeling that you have been to stay with friends. Highly recommended!

The property is set in an area of outstanding natural beauty in the far north of Portugal, undiscovered and unspoilt by mass tourism. The countryside is hilly and forested, interspersed with cultivated terraces of vines and subsistence agriculture. The property is well located to access the many sandy beaches on the coast, the Lima and Minho river valleys or the mountainous Peneda national park further inland. There are several picturesque and historic market towns to explore such as Ponte de Lima and Barcelos. All along the coast are small fishing ports serving excellent fresh seafood. Spain is only 30 minutes away.
