Built in 1868 the granite stone cottage has been sympathetically restored and retains many original features, including the open beamed ceiling and shutters.
Overlooking the rural hamlet of Tarrio, the property has stunning views across a river valley to the mountains beyond. The cottage is adjacent to the farmhouse where the owner lives and has a private patio with lemon tree and rustic barbecue. The pool and surrounds( occasionally shared with the owner) overlooks terraces of lawn, flowers and vegetable gardens that guests are welcome to explore. Car-parking is available under shady vines that are still used to produce wine on the property.
The accommodation is laid out as an open plan studio and has a double bed plus sofa beds suitable for children. In winter there is a cosy wood-burning stove and a fan is available for the summer months. The well-equipped kitchen has a gas hob/oven/grill and a microwave. The bathroom is spacious and modern with a thermostatic shower, wc, bidet and wash-basin.
The cottage has free wi-fi coverage and the flatscreen TV is connected to a satellite receiving all UK channels. There is also a DVD and music system.
There are many tracks for walking and mountain-bike riding leading from the property and the owner has bicycles for guest use. In the old stables of the farmhouse there is a games room with a table tennis table, table-top football, boules and badminton equipment, and a paper-back library.
There is a shared laundry area with washing machine, tumble dryer and iron for guest's use.
The local town of Paredes de Coura is 6km away and has a river swimming area, shops, cafes, restaurants and a Saturday market. In addition to the forest and village walks on your doorstep and the property is ideally situated to explore the coast and it's sandy beaches, the market towns of the Minho/Lima valleys or the Peneda-Geres National Park. The Spanish border is 30 mins and Porto airport is 1 hr drive away.
Canoeing/Kayaking: The owner has details of canoes for hire on the River Lima and River Minho. The canoeing is suitable for beginners and children.
Moved to Portugal from the UK in 2005 to enjoy the peace, climate, lush countryside and uncrowded beaches of the Costa Verde. The friendly, relaxed attitude of the local population and the lower cost of living were also major factors.
Now retired, I spend my time gardening and looking after the property, cycling and kite-surfing, and of course, making sure our guests have a wonderful holiday!
Mike Wild purchased this cottage in 2005
I love the character that comes with an old granite built property - and it keeps nice and cool in the summer. The view from the pool across the valley is stunning and although we are in a peaceful unspoilt location, we are only a few minutes drive from the local market town of Paredes de Coura
A large, virtually private pool (as only occasionally shared with owner and wife) and well-maintained terraced gardens of 3,000 sq metres.
Peaceful - apart from the church bells, and the occasional tractor working in the fields below.
Well-located to access
-the coast and a range of beautiful sandy beaches
- the Peneda -Geres National Park
-the Spanish border and coastal resorts
-the historic towns of Ponte de Lima, Braga, Guimaraes
My 7-months pregnant wife and I came over for a pre-baby week of relaxation and quality time, and the Casita fitted the bill perfectly. Casa da Fonte is a perfect combination of traditional buildings and gardens with modern levels of equipment, comfort and convenience. Everything is in excellent condition. The casita consists of one very large room for sleeping, living and eating, plus a seperate shower room off to the side, with access to the private courtyard - a perfect amount of space for a couple and maybe 1 or 2 small children. The spacious pool area looks out over the terraced garden and vines, into the valley below.
The local hills and valleys are great for exploring, with ancient lanes and pathways, abandoned water mills and ruins, local smallholders with their traditional tools, waterfalls and abundant wildlife. These are best explored on foot or by mountain bike. Mike was an excellent guide on 2 wheels, taking me down some challenging and scenic trails while giving me the benefit of his detailed local knowledge!
Getting into the car, there are plenty of good days out within easy driving distance - I particularly liked visiting Ponte de Lima for the Roman bridge and exploring the interesting back streets and the Gil Eannes hospital ship in Viana do Castelo (we were going to go to the beach, but never quite made it!); also the fortress in Valenca, looking across the Minho river to Spain. My wife enjoyed a day in the spa at Moncao, which is fed with warm spring water from the nearby hills.
Other highlights were: the wood-burning stove; drinking Alvarinho in the sunny courtyard with a good book (if you run out, the games room has a good stock, of books that is); entering the 'Draftzone' mountain bike event at Melgaco; eating local salt cod dishes; travelling on the scenic and almost deserted local roads.
I'd recommend the Casita to any couple looking for a relaxing getaway in tranquil surroundings that are great fun to explore.
The property had everything needed for us to enjoy our stay. We particulary liked the local waymarked walks and the virtually empty and winding roads - great for sports cars! Mike and Maria, our hosts, were very helpful but in no way intrusive. It was lovely to be able to enjoy the home produced fruit and eggs.
We would recommend trips to Ponte de Lima and Vila Nova de Cerveira. No doubt, we would have visited the beaches if it had not been end-of-season. The evenings do get a little chilly in October but the log burner kept us warm and cosy.
We had a wonderful time in the cottage Casa da fonte, its absolutely beautiful place with great views everywhere.
North Portugal is very green , lot of nice walking routes and charming towns and places to visit.
Maria and Mike are great hosts very friendly and warm people.
Would recommend to anyone looking for peace and quiet atmosphere.
Thank you very much for hospitality ,fresh vegetables, fruits and eggs (delicious ).

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Mike and Maria's cottage. It was clean and comfortable and had everything we needed for a wonderful holiday. Mike and Maria were always friendly and helpful. We enjoyed your chats and advice on the local area. The lovely fresh fruit and vegetable from the garden was an unexpected bonus. We managed to complete several of the many waymarked walking routes in the area and a few cycle rides. When it was too hot for walking we enjoyed relaxing in the garden or by the pool. There are many delightful towns and villages to explore in the area. We would definitely recommend this property to friends and family. Thank you Mike and Maria for providing this beautiful cottage.
We had a wonderful, restful week in the cottage. Mike and Maria were helpful, kind and unobtrusive.
The views from the cottage and pool are stunning. As a keen swimmer it was bliss to be able to have a pool available for a couple of two. The area has much to offer and travelling to Spain easy. Porto itself offers everything you could wish for.
Thank you for a fabulous holiday I slept really well too !!!
Utterly stunning location and equally superb property. Such friendly and generous hosts in Mike and Maria. I would wholeheartedly recommend the casita to anyone. We were a family of 5 for a quick 5 day break and we managed superbly in the accommodation.
The property is set in an area of outstanding natural beauty in the far north of Portugal, undiscovered and unspoilt by mass tourism. The countryside is hilly and forested, interspersed with cultivated terraces of vines and subsistence agriculture. The property is well located to access the many sandy beaches on the coast, the Lima and Minho river valleys or the mountainous Peneda national park further inland. There are several picturesque and historic market towns to explore such as Ponte de Lima and Barcelos. All along the coast are small fishing ports serving excellent fresh seafood. Spain is only 30 minutes away.
