About the property

Quality 6 bedroom villa on river border of Portugal & Spain - next to great town

Please note: We are currently not planning to offer bookings after 22nd December 2019; please ignore this site if it offers / allows bookings past this point.

Location, location, location!

1) Tranquillity but literally right next to a large fashionable town and opposite a river beach; you get walking distance access to cafes, restaurants, shopping, banks, a spa & more, yet only enjoy bird song and country / river / mountain views at our property.

2) Direct river access for boating / kayaking / fishing / paddling / swimming, plus a great pool (pool is summer season only - £150 / week discount if you do not want to use it). There is also an all year indoor heated public pool within easy walking distance.

3) Spain and Portugal; 3 minutes drive and you are in Spain. Enjoy Portuguese and Spanish cuisine, wines, shopping, etc. Best seafood, traditional Portuguese food and tapas!

4) Privacy, luxury and more; secure grounds (not overlooked), advanced security system (night time mode and allows certain open windows), luxury furnishings, quality bedding, insect screens.

On the River Minho border with Spain; this is one of the few properties on the Iberian Peninsular with direct river access for boating, kayaking and fishing (trout and salmon). Fully furnished to a very high standard with all amenities, large (12,000 sqm) walled secure grounds, full sized swimming pool with children's section, fruit orchard, vineyard, family garden, there is even a stream going through the grounds. Adjacent field / horse paddock available. Bring your own horse or boat if you want, or boat / kayak rentals to your river entrance gate easily arranged.

6 Bedrooms (master en suite), 4 bathrooms in total, large family lounge (with TV), large screen TV lounge, UK Sky HD TV (most villas in Spain and Portugal use low quality Internet TV boxes; we provide full HD for your favorite BBC, etc. shows), dining room, large kitchen (with TV), additional large breakfast room, extra guest / children's lounge, study, office, laundry (drying) room, separate laundry room, full sized swimming pool, large vineyard, gated vehicle and pedestrian security with video entry, large BBQ serving family garden and outdoor dining area. Gate house, dog pounds, triple garage and workshop area, summer house, granite pergola, established grounds with all the fruit (cherries, plums, apples, citrus, peaches etc) & flowers you can think of, granite cubos / cobblestone driveway goes all the way from the entry gates past and around the villa / garages, then down to the river access gates, large parabola, intelligent alarm system, Spanish and Portuguese mobile phone coverage, Internet with Wi-Fi, telephone line. The kitchens are all fully equipped.

No pets or smoking inside the villa please, but dogs and smokers are welcome outside.

There are fruit & nuts for you to pick year round! Easter, July, August and December are festival times in town (bands, music, events, fairs, etc.)!

There is a cot, play pen, baby rocker and baby feeding high chair at the villa, plus many toys and children's books (in English and Portuguese). If you want to work / stay connected while here and bring your lap top, no problem; we can provide a fax / printer. We have a general use PC anyone can use (no camera though).

The section of river our property is on is the last navigable section going upstream (it is possible to take a boat all the way down the river to the Atlantic). Just east of us is a white water section of the river. If you are a boating enthusiast, this gives you the best of both worlds. You could take a boat down (and back up) the river one day, and then go kayaking the next. If you like kayaking, you could start all the way to / at Melgaco, and then kayak all the way down the river to our property, along some of the most beautiful and unspoiled river scenery on the Iberian Peninsular, if not Western Europe. Along the course of the river from Melgaco to our villa, you will experience tranquil, faster moving and white water sections; some local adventure companies also offer white water rafting.

The river water is still exceptionally clean at our property, with superb chad, trout and even some salmon fishing (low cost seasonal permit required, easily obtained). It is also great for a dip / swim (with caution), as many Spanish families do on the other side where there is a popular though seldom overcrowded river beach (praia fluvial). Unlike much further down the river towards the estuary end which has a typical muddy smell and of course is subject to the output of the towns along its course, the river water quality at our property is exceptionally high. And, unlike the local beaches on the Atlantic Coast, though well worth a visit to buy fresh fish direct from the fisherman, some superb fresh fish restaurants, and Atlantic rollers (popular with surfers) / white sandy beaches, the river beach / access sections around us do not get so busy, even during the height of summer.

We provide a housekeeper every two days to come in (bedding and towels); can do your laundry for extra payment. All mattresses are regularly steam cleaned. We use comfortable bed protectors which are washed and replaced before each new guest visit. Our duvets and pillows are also washed in between guests. Our bed linen is quality poly-cotton. Our towels are 100% cotton.

For the security conscious, we are in one of the lowest crime rate areas of Europe and at the end of the village no through road (our neighbours make excellent guards) In addition, we have 2 meter walled and security fenced gorunds and our property can only be accessed via the village road, unless you walk or have a tractor. In addition, we have one of the most advanced security systems there is with a button that takes you through to an emergency centre if you need an ambulance, fire truck or policeman! We fell comfortable sleeping with the wondows open and the screens down, though a neighbours cat might decide to come and say hello. However, you can close the secure shutters and still leave two strategic inaccessible (from the outside) windows opened for those superb nighttime river breezes. The main doors (front and lower floor kitchen) have easy access key entry locks so you can breeze in and out without worrying about univited guests.

There are also many popular river beaches nearby (these normally have high season cafes and restaurants). If it gets very hot, drive up into the mountains with a picnic hamper (there are summer season only restaurants in the mountains too). The local bottled mineral water Fastio from the Serra do Gerês is comparable with Scottish mountain spring water (very, very good). The national Peneda-Gerês park, where this water is from, is within easy driving distance.

Our grounds are full of flora, plus a lot of fruit. First out come the plums, then cherries (oh my goodness, our cherries are good), then nectarines and peaches, then apricots, then apples and pears. Oh, and we have blueberries, and guava, and eating grapes (you can reach grapes from the side of the pool even), and figs, and lichi, and persimmon, and two regional fruits called nispero (loquat) and the so called "strawberry tree" (arbutus unedo), pomegranate, and hazel nuts, and sweet chestnuts, and pistachios, and passion fruit, and did we mention the cherries! During the winter months, December and January, our citrus tress are laden with oranges, nectarines, lemons, limes, and satsumas. If you see ripe fruit, go ahead, pick and eat it.

In the family garden is an old, huge, legally protected cork oak tree which gives superb shade during the summer months (you will see where cork comes from when you look at the bark). In the grounds we have oak, chestnut, pine, wallnut and even pican nut trees (sorry, these are youngsters, no pican fruit yet) and even a macadamia nut tree (will never produce nuts as it tries to flower and fruit over winter). There are also raspberries and strawberries around normally.

The property is built on the top of a steep bank, and is therefore well above the flood plain. The granite cobblestone driveway goes all the way down to the double river gates. Also down there, there is a natural spring and small stream (previous owners used to have this feed a small tank to sit in, but it was too cold for us, so we extended it and turned it into an irrigation tank, which is now full of carp - next to a summer house where you can sit and listed to birdsong).

About Suci & Mark

This has been our primary family home for 11 years, from 2004, and we love it. We have moved abroad for business and specialist schooling for our daughter. We visit regularly and enjoy the villa still. We once owned and operated a small villa beach eco-resort in remote Northern Bali, so we know about what guests want and expect, we think and hope.

Our friend is our housekeeper and gardener; her husband is the handyman that maintains the property for us. They do not speak much English, but you will get by, for sure. After you arrive, we will call you, and talk you through everything if you like. The phone has International call barring but you can call our Portuguese mobiles if you need us (we are not in Portugal); we can liaise with the housekeeper and sort out anything that needs to be.

Suci & Mark purchased this chateau / country house in 2004

Why Suci & Mark chose Municipality of Monção

Easy walk to a great antique town full of cafes and more, or a lazy day paddling and swimming in your own private pool or the river bank below. Tons to do for all the family. Spend a few days out on trips; once to the Atlantic Coast of Portugal to buy some fresh bonito (small species of tuna) at a real fisherman's market, to walk along the white sandy beaches (also rock pool areas with great mussels; pick your own!), maybe take in luch at a great seafood restaurant (the squid is exceptional). Or go shopping in Vigo (some great shops and waterfront cafes). A few mornings to nearby Ponteareas (Spain) for sure; best seafood supermarket counter, patiserie / bread & cake shops, superb cafes and restaurants. A lazy day milling aorund the local town called Moncao (market day is Thursday); plenty of cafes and more. Wednesdays are good to go to the larger local Portuguese town of Valenca, as they have a huge market (buy English clothing store overruns at a fraction of the UK shop prices) and great fortified old town. A day in the mountains is good to cool down (it can get very hot here in the summer); there are even summer only mountain restaurants to enjoy (the lamb is exceptional). The Spanish coast maybe another day (fancy some scuba diving maybe). Kayak down the river; go on, try (there are supervised group outings or you can rent a kayak if you are experienced).

Avoid the mass tourist hoards; less fish and chips (although they sell fresh cod here at around half the price you can buy it in the UK) and more authentic regional cuisine. There are many tourists here, but they tend to be Portguese (what does that tell you, we are in the area that the Portuguese themselves chose to holiday at), Spanish and French.

Health centre with 24 hour emergency department 3 minutes drive away. Two large and exceptionally good riverside parks with picnic BBQ areas very close by; one is huge, with boating lake, long riverside jogging / cycling track, outdoor gym, agricultural museum, etc

What makes this chateau / country house unique

Two waterfront holidays for the price of one; immediate access to both Portugal and Spain. And you will not find better views! To that end, we have binolculars and telescopes (including a large refractor to watch the night time sky). Look at the river, go down and paddle, boat, kayak, swim, fish on the river. Then go back to your own private pool and look down to the river again! Is it possible? Will you get bored with looking at the river? We think not.

Be amongst the real people of Portugal and Spain. Immediate access to Spain (our views are of the mountains in Galicia, Spain) even though the property is in Portugal. Unspoilt area, clean air, unpoluted river, quiet, tranquil, secure, bird song (some beautiful songbirds during the day, wood peckers in the afternoon and owls at night). Only an hour through some great scenary to the Atlantic Coast but only a few meters (if going across the river) or 6 minutes drive to the popular river beach on the other side of the river. Great fishing and boating, or just hang out and picnic on the river. Tradtional food in Portugal. Tapas and seafood in Spain. True tranquility but with ready if not immediate access to many supermarkets and more.

If you want the larder / fridge / freezer / wine rack stocked in advance of your arrival, let us know; we will charge you the true local price plus 10 Euros for the person who gets it all for you.

Although we are not in Portugal, you can call our Portuguese mobiles from the house phone at any time (Internal calls are barred, so please buy a calling card at the local store or post office if you need this facility), and we will talk you through anything you need.

Security, security, security. Extensive 2 meter security fenced / walled grounds, not overlooked, video entry vehicle and pedestrian gates (plus regular padlocked river gates). We are in an exceptionally low crime area and at the end of the village no through road. Plus we have an advanced security system (emergency services +).

Beautiful spacious villa with lovely views

  • 5 of 5

My family and I stayed at Marks villa for two weeks at the end of June, we arrived at a very antisocial hour but Mark made sure everything was organised and as smooth as possible for us, his housekeeper Lucia and her family were there on our arrival and briefly showed us around, she spoke very little English but we got by, especially as one of our party spoke some Spanish. Lucia and her daughter were fantastic during our stay, changing sheets, cleaning etc. and helping us with any issue or questions we had.

The villa itself is marvellous, so much more spacious than it looks in the photos, there was over 10 in our party and at no point were we short on space, there were things available for the young children which was incredibly useful too - high chair, cot, toys etc.

The location is perfect for exploring Portugal and Spain and we found beautiful beaches between 30 and 40 minutes away as well as the river beach opposite. It's worth knowing there is a walk along the river from the bottom of the villa which leads you straight into the local town Moncào much more quickly than the roads (although there are a few rocks to climb over).

I would recommend the boat trip in Vigo over to Cies Island for a day trip - the beach is breathtaking. Caminha in Portugal is also well worth a visit, we ate at a wonderful restaurant in the square that made ice cream on site. Some of our party also went to the Festival at Braga which was great fun.

We found Continente (I can't remember it's name exactly) the best supermarket locally for us.

Unfortunately the jacuzzi bath was out of action during our stay but with such a lovely pool this wasn't an issue.

We made lemonade from the fantastic lemons we collected which was delicious and the children very much enjoyed petting the cats and spotting the hedgehogs at night!

I cannot fault Marks communications during and before our stay and Lucia and her family were fantastic and always smiling.

Thank you for a wonderful and unforgettable holiday - my two year old daughter now keeps asking to go back to her 'Portugal house'!

Owner's Response: Hello Imogen Thank you for your kind words. We are truly glad that you had a great time, and especially took time to go a little off the beaten track and walk along the river. Yes, Lucy and her daughter are our stars, and Lucy's husband. Glad you enjoyed the lemons! Guests are welcome to help themselves to whatever fruit we have, though many of the trees (cherries, plums, nectarines, etc.) fruit April through May, while the citrus (oranges, nectarines, etc.) are later - the lemons you had were on the trees from the winter. But you missed the large fig trees down the bottom? The jacuzzi feature of the bath is history for now I'm afraid; it is not a simple matter to get a replacement motor and pipes (we would need to get these too). :) Mark, Suci, Lucia and Adreana

beautiful mansion in absolutely peace

  • 4 of 5

Das Anwesen ist wunderschön ruhig im Grünen gelegen. Weder die Nachbar, noch eine Straße, oder irgendein anderes Haus ist zu sehen. Man entspannt völlig. Das Haus ist gut eingerichtet. Etwas kolonial.

Dear mark we are happy to be able to stay with you again this year!

Superbe Maison de Vacances

  • 5 of 5

Car: recommended

There are two excellent public recreation parks, one on the Portuguese side of the river (2 minutes drive away), the other on the Spanish side (5 minutes drive away). Each have children's play areas, BBQ / picnic areas, outdoor gymns and riverside walks. Next to the Portuguese park is a public covered / heated swimming pool and gym. The Spanish park is the largest, with a cycle track, boating pool, horticultural "museum" (animals, plants, history), avery, children's cycling track, and duck pond. These are excellent places to hang out with the local families and relax.

There are two local adventure tour companies offering loads of choices, especially kayaking, horse riding and the like. The Atlantic coast is approximately 45 minutes drive away (the beaches do get busy in the summer) where you will also find a small fishing port with fresh fish market, and some excellent seafood restaurants. There is a local health center with 24 hour emergency department, plus three international standard hospitals in Vigo, 25 minutes away. The nearest golfing is at Balneario de Mondariz (a country resort in Spain - highly recommend), 30 minutes drive away with a water palace spa and childrens / infants areas / resources, or at the Ponte de LIma Golf Resort in Portugal, 50 minutes drive away. The airport in Vigo offers small plane flights. There is also a hot air balloon company.

On the Portuguese side and within 5 minutes drive are 4 supermarkets; national markets Continental and Pingo Doce (the later we prefer for tropical fruits, patiserie and wine selection), plus local markets Coca and Minipreco. On the Spanish side in Ponteareas is our favorite supermarket, Eroski (there are two; bizarly the smaller town centre one is cheaper and has superb meat and fresh fish counters - their car park is free for their own customers and the excellent patiserie "Francos" and cafe "Monet" - absolute must uses). There are two Lidl and other supermarkets within 15 minutes drive, plus huge hypermarkets and department stores in Vigo (20 minutes drive). Recently, a Burger King has opened (3 minutes drive from us).

Restaurants; you are spoilt for choice, really. Tapas bars just across the river, a superb seafood restaurant in Ponteareas, excellent traditional food in nearby Melgaco, plus a wealth of restaurants in our local town, Moncao / Monção, itself.

Good days trips includ the Peneda mountains and of course the fine Atlantic Ocean beaches nearby. Vigo is a great day out for all you would expect from a large Spanish city, and Porto is just an hour away via one of the most scenic motorways in Europe. There is an excellent spa and water palace resort around 45 minutes away (El Balneario de Mondariz), plus equestrian centres for horse riding abound.

During July, August, Easter and Christmas / New Year the local town is just one long festival; be careful though, drink driving rules are strictly enforced (luckily, you can easily walk to the town centre, though perhaps not so easily back). And you will hear as many French voices as Portuguese during this time, as many of the Portuguese emmigrants who live and work in France come home to Moncao for their holidays.

There is a riverside railway on the Spanish side; a beautiful journey, which can take you all the way to Madrid, but nearby Ourense is a great market town to sepnd a day at before catching another train home (the station is just 5 minutes drive from our property).

We reserve the right to charge for overuse of electricity, etc. Do not worry, we are only looking to protect ourselves against abusive overuse. There will be a generous fair use quantity of toilet paper and kitchen paper towel rolls available upon your arrival. If you want something, let us know. Our housekeeper is our friend and also gardener. Her English is very limited, but sign language is easy! Her husband is our handyman. If anything goes wrong, he will fix it.

Please, relax, feel at home, enjoy yourselves.

We have two Sky boxes (one feeding the larger TV downstairs in the TV lounge), the other feeding the standard sized TV in the family lounge. We only receive Freeview channels, but these include BB1 HD and others in HD. Unlike many locations in Spain and Portugal, we get an excellent satellite signal normally (if there are big rain clouds, we can lose the signal for periods), because we have a huge parabola hidden away, so you can watch Strictly, Corrie, BBC News and whatever else in HD, no problem normally. But please, if there is thunder, disconnect the router and TV's (both signal feeds and mains); we have insurance but if there is a nearby strike, you will probably be without TV / Internet for the rest of your stay (we have quick release parabola signal connectors and surge protectors). There is Wi-Fi throughout the house.

There are children's bikes and other things around, but you may need to pump the tyres up. There is a sand box for infants in the garden; we will try to make sure it has sand, but please try and keep the sand in the box. There are also swings and a children's playhouse in the family garden, plus various toys around.

We keep some wines in the adega / wine cellar (this is the only locked room in the house for which you do not have a key, sorry). If you want a bottle of wine, the house keeper can sell you one!
