|Minimum Stay||2 nights|
A private rural retreat located in the enchanted high desert forest of northern New Mexico, this beautiful abode is tucked away amongst old-growth junipers and piñon pines. If you like being in nature, but prefer not to rough it much, this place is for you. A sense of serenity is pervasive as you wind your way through the compound. You will notice the retreat is designed for you to deepen your connection with the land and allow the tensions from daily life to dissolve. The property itself is on 37 acres, with 2 hiking loops in the natural surroundings.
LOCATION: The town (village is more like it), consists of about 150 residents, a general store and a post office. The three miles of dirt roads to the retreat are passable year-round and give the feeling that you are 'out there'. A 4-wheel drive vehicle is recommended in the snow and in the springtime mud. Although television is non-existent and cell service is sketchy, there is WiFi at the Main House, as well as a land line. If you'd like some off-site adventure, Taos is 40 minutes away, and Santa Fe is about an hour and a half. The Ski Valley is one hour door-to-door, and Ojo Caliente Spa and Mineral Springs are within a 25 minutes. You can visit ancient Indian cliff dwellings, hike in the mountains or on the mesa, and river-raft in the Rio Grande Gorge.

I'm originally from the East Coast, and I fell in love with northern NM on my first visit here in 1990. I'm an interior designer and artist by profession. I enjoy hiking, camping, skiing, rafting, and all of the arts. Museums, galleries, cafés, and restaurants are also high on my list of fun activities. I have travelled extensively in the US, as well as Europe, Asia, Central America, and most recently, South America. I love exploring new lands and cultures, and coming home to the peace and serenity of Carson.
Elizabeth Brownrigg purchased this house in 2010
I chose to create a vacation rental retreat in northern New Mexico primarily because of the amazing land and its location. Over 20 years ago I was drawn to purchase property here in Carson, knowing that one day I would make this place my home. The remote, peaceful location provides a respite for the most harried of people. And, it's also a wonderful spot for those who want a variety of day trips and activities. The location of Vista Verde Retreat is ideal. Taos and Santa Fe have many unique draws for tourists who love the Southwest: shopping, gallery touring, dining, the Pueblo. The local culture is flavorful. For the more outdoorsy types, rafting, skiing, and hiking provide plenty of exercise and magnificent views. Soaking in the nearby mineral springs is a great way to end, (or start) any day. The location and layout of this property is ideal for a family or group with diverse interests, or for those who want no activity at all.
I love this property because it's so serene and so rural. Surrounded by national forest, it's located amidst beautiful old-growth juniper and piñon pine trees. The nearby mountains provide an incredible backdrop. When I need an 'urban' fix, Taos is less than 40 minutes by car, and Santa Fe is about 90 minutes. Love it!
My siblings met me at this home because we needed a place to stay while visiting family. It felt as though we were on a retreat. The house was clean well organized. It had everything that you would need in a kitchen. Plenty of room and places to hang out if you need a quiet spot. There was even a hiking trail around the property, a chance to take in the beautiful surroundings.
We have tried a number of retreat locations in New Mexico, and this is the only one that has everything we look for: a beautiful, quiet, scenic location away from people and traffic; an inviting and comfortable facility (Vista Verde "Q" is elegant and simple, very lovely and in top condition); not too far from Albuquerque (two and a half hours); abundant outdoor opportunities nearby; a reasonable price; a full kitchen; and an owner who is responsive, friendly, and professional. The owner returns emails and phone calls promptly, has everything ready when you arrive, provides timely information regarding maps and directions, and welcomes you when you arrive with a gentle kindness that is so refreshing. I am thrilled to have found this beautiful location, managed by such a gracious and personable owner. I can't wait to come back. At last, our search for the perfect spot is over.
We stayed at the Q for four wonderful days! The retreat is in a dream location that is surrounded by the beauty of nature. You could not ask for a better hideaway. We are already making plans to go again.
Excellent! Secluded but close to great restaurants and shopping in Taos. Beautiful setting and interior design. Fully furnished and equipped with modern kitchen and bath facilities. Living areas beautiful and very comfortable.
Very relaxing! This place allows you to see some scenery that will just take your breath away. The houses are unique and fun to be in.
We stayed at "The Q," a warm, beautifully decorated house nestled in the pinyon forest. It's worth the drive down a long, muddy road to discover this hidden treasure. The house is spacious. The grounds are lovely, with winding trails that lead to mountain vistas.
The kitchen is well-appointed, the bed is quit comfortable. The rooms are sunny and gorgeous. The owner's artwork is inspired.
