Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday home in Charente - Gendaine

Situated near the medieval town of Aubeterre in the Charente

An old farm house, recently fully modernised, it has spacious accommodation and provides a well-equipped and comfortable base for a relaxing holiday. This part of the Charente boasts one of the best climates in France, with the highest number of sunshine hours after the Mediterranean. Surrounded by gently rolling hills and sunflower fields, Gendaine makes an ideal base for a wide variety of outdoor pursuits.Nearby villages are full of activity, with places to visit, dine and drink. Our local bistro restaurant is only a short walk. Full details and more photographs can be found on our website but there are 3 bedrooms, two bathrooms, a large lounge and dining area and a fully fitted kitchen with all modern conveniences. Outside on the large secluded veranda there is a shaded lounge and dining area and Weber Gas BBQ. Guestbook comments from the owner

Have had a wonderful two weeks in your lovely home. Weather fantastic if not a little too hot on a couple of days hitting 36C. Hence lots of time spent lazing around the pool! Aubeterre and its lake beaches were lovely and we had a fun hour on the canoes trying to paddle in time together. The Intermarche at Chalais had everything we needed and the markets at Chalais and Riberac were worth a visit. Many thanks again for a great holiday and all the help from Emma with any queries we had. Would definitely recommend this to our friends.

Fantastic fun family holiday

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful two week holiday, and felt so at home in this beautiful house. We were so surprised to see that many areas of the house and garden had been renovated with a wonderful new terrace area, which had a fantastic seating area, gas BBQ and huge dining table!

The house itself was immaculate, and our children (3,6 & 9) were delighted to find many books, board games, DVD's and videos to entertain them, although the icing on the cake for them was the heated pool! Which was great when our first week was a bit cooler! The pool itself was very secure with a fenced gate and 2 alarms on the poolside. The house inside was lovely and cool and the kitchen was very well equipped.

We didn't travel far from the house, as we wanted a holiday that we could just chill and relax, and this was definitely a relaxing destination!

We did venture out occasionally and found a fantastic treetop climbing place in Nabinaud, and enjoyed pizza at the beach at St Aulaye. But the majority of our evenings were spent barbequing on the new, and very swanky BBQ!

We would highly recommend this as a family holiday, and we will definitely be back again! Thank you Jane and David for sharing your home.

Stunning villa, perfect family holiday!

  • 5 of 5

Everything about this holiday and villa was perfect. We were travelling with young children (2 year old and 6 month baby) and this house catered fantastically for our needs. With a highchair, children's toys and books all available, it meant less for us to pack! The heated pool was very securely locked with a fence round it, alarm on the pool and a padlocked gate. The facilities in the house are excellent with everything from a very well catered kitchen to a stunning Webber bbq on the veranda! The house was very clean and well maintained. The area is perfect for families with canoeing close by and a fantastic man-made beach a few kilometres away. There are also wonderful local markets on which are definitely worth a visit.

Gite near Les Essards

  • 4 of 5

We had a really lovely holiday at this Gite. The house was as described on the website with comfortable beds and a nice cool (as in temperature) interior. We had good weather, mid twenties most of the time with two days over 30...a bit hot for us. The pool in particular was lovely. A good size and salt water so much kinder on our skin. We mostly went for walks in the morning and lazed around by the pool in the afternoons. It's a shame there wasn't a bakery in Les Essards so there was a bit of driving or long walks involved in getting fresh bread every day but all very manageable. Aubeterre sur Dronne is definitely worth a visit with a lovely market on Sundays. We were there with teenage daughters and the Wi-Fi was up to the job.

David's daughter and son-in-law were in touch to make sure everything was okay and the pool was well looked after. There are two very nice neighbours near the house who gave us tips for where to eat out and bowls of fresh figs. They were friendly but we only saw them when we wanted to so plenty of peace and quiet.

All in all a very nice holiday gite and I would recommend it.

Lovely relaxed stay

  • 5 of 5

The let is really well furnished and there is loads of land for children to play in. The pool is big and has a good shallow end. It is very peaceful - you do need a car to get to places but places to eat and supermarkets which are between 10 to 20 minutes away. we had a lovely stay, the weather wasn't great but it didn't matter. The owners were very easy to contact and helpful.

Perfect holiday home

  • 5 of 5

Gendaine is a fantastic property, extremely well maintained and equipped and perfect for a family holiday. We had a great week chilling by the pool, sleeping in the hammock and drinking pimms in the garden-perfect! Aubeterre is a lovely little village with some great restaurants if you want to venture out for dinner. It was great to have Emma on hand if we needed any help, but everything went smoothly. Thoroughly recommended!

La Grande Detente!

  • 4 of 5

We had a very relaxing three weeks at Gendaine this August, with the only disappointment being the weather. We had some hot sunshine nearly everyday, but it did play hide and seek with the clouds and rain. According to the French people I spoke to this summer has been unseasonably bad.

Gendaine is a pleasant house with a lovely large garden and pool, just as described on the website. It has clearly been built with the sun in mind- the pool ( very private) and terrace are orientated East/West so that it gets the sun ( when it deigns to come out!) all day. The house has lovely thick walls to keep it cool in the heat - unfortunately in the cool evenings we experienced it was a little chilly. We felt it would be somehow wrong to come to Southern France in August and ask to have the heating on, so we snuggled under duvets in the living room!

We had several great excursions - Gendaine is practically in the Dordogne with its wealth of holiday activities- Aubterre ( v pretty), Perigueux (great Gallo-Roman villa/ museum, cathedral and medieval quarter), Brantome (river, abbey founded by Charlemagne, cute shops) and the castle at Boudeilles were highlights. We ate out

many times- the most memorable meals being at the Relais du Chateau (actually over the drawbridge and in the castle for a gastronomic treat!) and the Sunday night at the Brasserie de la Place in Aubterre, sitting on their terrace in the square while a live jazz band played. Magic!

The old Roman town of Aubeterre sur Dronne, recently voted one of the prettiest villages in France, is only a short drive away. A favourite place to shop, eat, drink and relax under the lime trees in the square. Slightly further are the market towns of Chalais and Riberac (with one of the biggest markets in France!).There are a variety of local festivals, fetes and firework displays that take place throughout the Summer. About a 45 minute drive, are the capital towns of Angouleme and Perigeux which offer a wider and more sophisticated range of shops in a typically French setting. Also within easy reach are towns such as St. Emilion, Bergerac, Cognac and Bordeaux, all famous for their wines and spirits and equally beautiful places to visit. Beyond Bordeaux are the unspoilt beaches of the Atlantic coast with several superb resorts within a reasonable drive. Families with children will enjoy day trips to the popular attractions of the Aqualand Water Park, La Palmyre Zoo and Futuroscope.

Other Activities: Canoeing and quad biking,
