An old farm house, recently fully modernised, it has spacious accommodation and provides a well-equipped and comfortable base for a relaxing holiday. This part of the Charente boasts one of the best climates in France, with the highest number of sunshine hours after the Mediterranean. Surrounded by gently rolling hills and sunflower fields, Gendaine makes an ideal base for a wide variety of outdoor pursuits.Nearby villages are full of activity, with places to visit, dine and drink. Our local bistro restaurant is only a short walk. Full details and more photographs can be found on our website but there are 3 bedrooms, two bathrooms, a large lounge and dining area and a fully fitted kitchen with all modern conveniences. Outside on the large secluded veranda there is a shaded lounge and dining area and Weber Gas BBQ. There is a superb salt water private swimming pool (12x 6m) with a large patio for basking in the sun in complete privacy. There is also a log burning stove and central heating for the winter.
Have had a wonderful two weeks in your lovely home. Weather fantastic if not a little too hot on a couple of days hitting 36C. Hence lots of time spent lazing around the pool! Aubeterre and its lake beaches were lovely and we had a fun hour on the canoes trying to paddle in time together. The Intermarche at Chalais had everything we needed and the markets at Chalais and Riberac were worth a visit. Many thanks again for a great holiday and all the help from Emma with any queries we had. Would definitely recommend this to our friends.
We are a family of five with three girls aged 13, 11 and 9. As parents all we wanted was total R&R in the sun and the girls wanted to swim and eat Moules et frites, have space to run about and also do their own thing! It's hard to get that balance. Not at Gendaine. It ticks every box.
It's a beautiful villa, perfect size for us, the rooms are spacious and light and have everything you could possibly need. We cooked every night and found the kitchen very well equipped with all the necessary gadgets. We then ate outside on the veranda, all but two night and would sit out until late playing games.
The setting is stunning, the pool is fantastic, with an alarm and lockable gate for peace of mind and spacious sunbathing area. It also has a large grassed area where we played badminton most nights, there was pick up sticks, boules, giant dominoes, table tennis and lots of games. The girls loved the hammock as it was a little sanctuary for them.
The weather was beautifully hot (highest was 34 degrees in the shade) with a breeze on most days - perfect.
We had a perfect holiday and we recommend you look no further. We ventured out only a handful of times for a couple of lunches, sightseeing, a market, to shop and there is lots to close by but we were actually surprised how contented we were to just stay put and enjoy what Gendaine had to offer.
Thank you David, Jane and Emma for a wonderful, most memorable holiday, we hope to be back.
Gendaine seemed to be ideal for our holiday requirements, based on our web-based research. When we got there, the updating really made it - great outdoor living area and an amazing shower. We really capitalised on being able to do virtually everything outside in the great weather. There was bread, cheese and wine left as a welcome for us - a nice touch.
We were ideally located between Chalais (great tapas at La Bodega) and Riberac for shopping and Aubeterre for evening meals, canoeing and other attractions. Also Le Grand Etang de La Jemaye was easily accessible for the beach, walks and canoeing. Saint Auylaye was also well worth a visit with a amazing crepes at La Muscadiere, river beach, high ropes and water slides. For older kids (8 yrs upwards) there was high ropes at Base De Loisirs De Poltrot, plus many other things to do there. Bonnes was a few km away with a terrific boulangerie and patisserie and an amazing pizzeria, loved by all.
The pool is where much of our time was spent as temperatures were around 30C in the shade, though not overpoweringly hot with a lovely breeze. An ideal size and great for swimming. Being a saltwater pool, it was kinder on the skin and eyes and left no chlorine smell. Plenty of shade provided with big parasols and plenty of comfortable sunbeds.
The accommodation was well appointed and really a home-from-home, with everything you could possible need. The bedrooms were light and airy with lovely beds and linen plus nice towels provided. The only slight improvement that could be made would be a larger fridge. Manageable, but often pushed to it's limits as we didn't shop that often, preferring to do weekly, big shops.
There was plenty to explore in the lanes and trails around the accommodation - abundant wildlife and a chapel in the valley.
As everything was so well thought-out we had no need to contact Emma, but we did meet her on departure and she couldn't have been more friendly and approachable.
We'd like to really thank David,Jane and Emma for a wonderful two weeks, and we'd definitely be back. We thoroughly recommend Gendaine as a perfect holiday rental. We'd also be interested if there are plans to provide another bedroom - when we holiday as an extended family, there's 9 of us.
Lovely house, and so peaceful. Would highly recommend to anyone wanting a relaxed and peaceful holiday
We had a wonderful two week holiday, and felt so at home in this beautiful house. We were so surprised to see that many areas of the house and garden had been renovated with a wonderful new terrace area, which had a fantastic seating area, gas BBQ and huge dining table!
The house itself was immaculate, and our children (3,6 & 9) were delighted to find many books, board games, DVD's and videos to entertain them, although the icing on the cake for them was the heated pool! Which was great when our first week was a bit cooler! The pool itself was very secure with a fenced gate and 2 alarms on the poolside. The house inside was lovely and cool and the kitchen was very well equipped.
We didn't travel far from the house, as we wanted a holiday that we could just chill and relax, and this was definitely a relaxing destination!
We did venture out occasionally and found a fantastic treetop climbing place in Nabinaud, and enjoyed pizza at the beach at St Aulaye. But the majority of our evenings were spent barbequing on the new, and very swanky BBQ!
We would highly recommend this as a family holiday, and we will definitely be back again! Thank you Jane and David for sharing your home.
Everything about this holiday and villa was perfect. We were travelling with young children (2 year old and 6 month baby) and this house catered fantastically for our needs. With a highchair, children's toys and books all available, it meant less for us to pack! The heated pool was very securely locked with a fence round it, alarm on the pool and a padlocked gate. The facilities in the house are excellent with everything from a very well catered kitchen to a stunning Webber bbq on the veranda! The house was very clean and well maintained. The area is perfect for families with canoeing close by and a fantastic man-made beach a few kilometres away. There are also wonderful local markets on which are definitely worth a visit.
We had a really lovely holiday at this Gite. The house was as described on the website with comfortable beds and a nice cool (as in temperature) interior. We had good weather, mid twenties most of the time with two days over 30...a bit hot for us. The pool in particular was lovely. A good size and salt water so much kinder on our skin. We mostly went for walks in the morning and lazed around by the pool in the afternoons. It's a shame there wasn't a bakery in Les Essards so there was a bit of driving or long walks involved in getting fresh bread every day but all very manageable. Aubeterre sur Dronne is definitely worth a visit with a lovely market on Sundays. We were there with teenage daughters and the Wi-Fi was up to the job.
David's daughter and son-in-law were in touch to make sure everything was okay and the pool was well looked after. There are two very nice neighbours near the house who gave us tips for where to eat out and bowls of fresh figs. They were friendly but we only saw them when we wanted to so plenty of peace and quiet.
All in all a very nice holiday gite and I would recommend it.
The old Roman town of Aubeterre sur Dronne, recently voted one of the prettiest villages in France, is only a short drive away. A favourite place to shop, eat, drink and relax under the lime trees in the square. Slightly further are the market towns of Chalais and Riberac (with one of the biggest markets in France!).There are a variety of local festivals, fetes and firework displays that take place throughout the Summer. About a 45 minute drive, are the capital towns of Angouleme and Perigeux which offer a wider and more sophisticated range of shops in a typically French setting. Also within easy reach are towns such as St. Emilion, Bergerac, Cognac and Bordeaux, all famous for their wines and spirits and equally beautiful places to visit. Beyond Bordeaux are the unspoilt beaches of the Atlantic coast with several superb resorts within a reasonable drive. Families with children will enjoy day trips to the popular attractions of the Aqualand Water Park, La Palmyre Zoo and Futuroscope.
