About Thom Zerhusen
Susan and Thom are originally from Baltimore, Maryland but they met in Cayman. Thom was working as a dive instructor at Don Foster's Dive and Susan was visiting Cayman on a dive vacation. 'We met on a dive trip to Stingray City and the rest is well...history.' They decided to call Cayman home and bought a dilapidated beach house in the heart of Bodden Town that they renovated and have lived in for over 20 years. 'After Hurricane Ivan destroyed most of Bodden Town and the Island we had to sart all over. We were lucky to find Castaway and decided to renovate the existing structures and make them available to visitors.' The lodge was first to be finished and became available to guest in 2011 and now the cottage is ready too. 'We have tried to make them unique and special and if you come to Castaway we hope you will find our little piece of paradise as magical as we do.'

The Most Relaxed we’ve ever been!!!!
When looking for a vacation spot, you have to ask yourself what you’re looking for. Do you want the hustle and bustle of seven mile beach with the insane traffic and typical condos? Or do you want laid back, peaceful, charming, and PRIVATE BEACHFRONT? We chose the latter. The Castaway Cottage is all those things and more. To get up in the morning, have breakfast/coffee outside overlooking the south sound as the waves wash beautiful shells and coral ashore, to jump in that gorgeous turquoise water and see the marine wildlife all around you as you snorkel just steps from your back door.....words just don’t do it justice. Thom and Susan are fantastic people, not just hosts. They are kind and helpful, without being intrusive. We learned so much about the Cayman culture and history from them. And Thom’s rum cake did not disappoint. It was phenomenal! Some tips from us: 1. Rent a car....you’ll want the freedom to see the island as you wish. 2. Don’t panic about backing out of the driveway. It’s really not that bad. 3. Wear water shoes when going into the ocean. The sea grass hides a lot of things, including conch, and other pointy critters. 4. You MUST eat at least once at the Czech in just down the road. I think we ate there six times during our stay. Seriously. It’s that good.
We had our wedding/honeymoon during this stay. I can’t think of anything I would change. It was the vacation of a lifetime. We had our wedding on the private beach behind the cottage and everything went so well, even though we though it would rain us out. Fortunately, it seems to rain in spells. And they don’t usually last long.
Thom and Susan, thank you both so much for your kindness and your excellent hospitality. We hope to be back soon.
To those reading this review, book this place now. You will NOT regret it. We only regret we waited so long to do it ourselves!!

Castaway is truly paradise!
The Castaway Cottage is a fabulous place to stay. I just could not get over the fantastic view. It looks like something you'd see on a postcard! The best part is the beach is essentially your backyard and it's very private! I loved the snorkeling right out on our beach at the Cottage! The Cottage provides you with everything you need and the owners, Thom and Susan, are very sweet and helpful. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone. One of our friends is already planning a trip to the Cottage based upon just our photographs! We hope to someday be able to return to our little slice of paradise at Castaway Cottage!!
As advertised (and reviewed)!
My wife and I came down to celebrate our ten year anniversary. What a great way to slow life down for a bit. The previous reviews are spot on. We absolutely adore the cottage, and as importantly, we loved our brief yet meaningful conversations with Tom and Susan. Thanks for a great experience...hope to be back soon!

Castaway by the Sea - Doesn't Get Any Better!
Castaway by the Sea is a dream cottage, perfect for two, clean as a whistle and stocked so all you need is your bathing suit, shorts, tees, flip flops, toothbrush and a good book! Thom and Susan are perfect hosts and are a wonderful couple who aim to please. The location of the cottage is perfect, the beach is right there and there is also a place it sit in the shade. It's no wonder guests want to return, it's like a home away from home and Bodden Town is close enough yet far enough away from the crowds! Castaway is a gem indeed! Loved it.
Postcard View of Gorgeous Caribbean Sea under Patio Umbrella/Comfortable Decor Inside Cute Cottage
We stayed in a seaside condo in St. Croix 3/2017. It didn't compare to the view, beach access, privacy, etc. of this gem on Grand Cayman! The deck and patio furniture here were new and so comfortable that we spent much of our week (3/3-3/11/18) there. We've been on Caribbean cruises & stayed in B&B's in Aruba & St. Thomas. This has been our favorite by far! We loved the view from the deck so much that we hated to leave to go to restaurants, the grocery (We liked Hurley's better), etc. Tropical breezes were wonderful as well as the lack of humidity and bugs! Sitting by the water was wonderful to hear the roar of the surf hitting the reef, to watch the breakers, and to see the variations of blue in the water. Thom kept the beach nicely raked and the landscaping just frames that $1,000,000 view!
Thom & Susan are very friendly, helpful hosts without being intrusive. The rum cake Thom gave us qualified him for being a great baker too! They have their homey cottage well stocked with beautiful coral patterned china and all the utensils you might need to cook in. Susan's artwork was displayed throughout...from her amazing cutwork on the wall to her paintings on the barstools to samples of the tropical note cards renters can obtain. Their cute pet rooster can be heard sometimes, but he certainly didn't keep us from sleeping on the comfy mattress. We loved resting in the hammock by the patio. When we did decide that we wanted to sit inside, they have a very comfortable leather sofa that is also great for naps. The cottage was immaculately clean and was in Bodden Town, which made it less stressful for us to navigate since it doesn't have George Town's busy roundabouts & traffic. Driving on the right side of the road with the driver's seat on the right side of the car was enough of an adventure for us most of the time.
When we did decide to venture away from the gorgeous sunrises, etc., we loved eating at Czech Inn, just down the road. George, who's been a chef with the 4 Seasons restaurants all over the world, opened his fun restaurant made with the freshest ingredients. It's lower in price because you bring your own wine or beer. His grandmother's recipe for potato salad was great as was everything like the jagerschnitzel. My husband said his NY strip steak was 1 of the best ever! We also loved the freshly caught fish fry that you can walk to on weekends at Grape Tree Café. Red snapper...yum!
We've rebooked for 3/19. Can't wait, Thom & Susan! Thanks!!
Castaway did not disappoint.
Much of what I will write would be repetitive of others, but there is a lot to be said for a private cottage that overlooks beach and ocean with well-kept grounds, great hosts, and central location away from congested Seven Mile area. The availability to just walk down and snorkel out front was a wonderful option. The cottage leaves you wanting for nothing and Thom and Susan are wonderful hosts. Cons: Noise. We were aware of being on the main road (and the somewhat treacherous driveway passage), so we understood that in making our reservation. Everything else about this place is too awesome to give it less than 5 stars, despite the loud road noise (and frequent rooster crowing :-/). Give it a try!
