Water supply!: An important question to ask when staying in rural Spain is 'What happens when the water is cut off?' as this happens a lot - there may be a repair needed or a shortage of water in the area - and you rarely get any warning!. We have a back up system of 1000 litres at the flick of a switch -so there is no inconvenience to our guests. Check this point before booking your holiday!
Home Produce & Green/ Eco friendly: A substantial vegetable garden supplies us and our guests with plenty of fresh produce. We also have our own fruit; oranges, lemons, limes, apricots, plums, nectarines, pears and kaki for all to enjoy!
We are very keen to reduce our affect on the surroundings and we now have a highly efficient solar system for our hot water
We have hens and ducks for our own supply of eggs and pigs also make an appearance at our place from around June to January! Turkeys, peacocks and tortoises complete the menagerie!. Don't worry, they are all at a short distance from the casita but great fun to visit - especially for the children.
Birds abound! So many different species of birds can be seen and heard- from Nightingales to the amazing Golden Orioles and Eagles.
We moved to Spain from the Surrey / Hampshire area of southern England. There we both had normal jobs and brought up our 4 sons, played plenty of tennis and had a very busy life. Our sons, now all adults, visit frequently but live either in the UK, Hong Kong or the States! We have been described as a variation on The Good Life's Tom and Barbara but I am not so sure!! We do have 2 dogs, 4 cats a dozen hens, turkeys, a variety of ducks, peacocks, llamas and July to Feb we have pigs. We now spend most of our time tending the garden and the animals plus producing vegetables when we have the time!
Kay and Bernie purchased this cottage in 2004
The 360º views and the proximity to the coast, the mountains with the ski-ing and Granada city.
Now only 1½ hours from Malaga airport it is so easy to reach. Only 1 hour from Granada
The property is presented to an excellent standard with all mod cons yet having the feel of a truly rustic Andalucian home. The views are spectacular from every window and the property is nestled in a lovely secluded garden with a beautiful outside pool and seating area. The hosts are charming and are always looking to make sure your stay is enjoyable but yet not intrusive on your stay. The home is spotless with all mod cons such as WiFi, TV etc. If you want a break from the hassle of life and need your batteries recharged this is the place to stay. Excellent all round!
Our third stay in what feels like a home from home. The casita has everything we need and our own cat to fuss every day. The garden continues to develop with new projects every year and the setting can't be bettered. What else did it need- well llamas of course!
Sit by the pool, go to the beach, or up the mountain, or potter around the garden, it's always too soon to come home.
This is a very comfortable, impeccably clean cottage, which has everything that you might need for your stay. It is attached to the owners', Kay and Bernie's, house but feels entirely separate. We ate the figs off the tree outside the entrance to the property and welcomed the shaded areas to eat in in the garden - the sun shone throughout our stay, and in fact we ate every single meal outside, which was lovely. The pool was brilliant - there is nothing like having your own pool to mess around in - crystal clear and a great size. It is also surrounded - as is the rest of the garden - by climbing vines such as passion flower as well as bushes of plumbago - so attractive! We really enjoyed walking through Kay and Bernie's garden of an evening, such a tranquil and relaxing environment, while our two children became somewhat hooked on being present when Kay put her animals to bed at night - namely the ducks, turkeys and the llamas - this was one of their favourite parts of our entire holiday! Kay was very welcoming of their interest and was a very helpful and personable source of information throughout our stay.
So a very lovely time was had by us at Las Chimeneas. I can't describe what a relief it is when the cottage that you hire is even better in the flesh than it looks in the photos.
We had a fantastic holiday! The cottage was clean and comfortable with beautiful mountain views from every window.
We arrived late on a Sunday with two hungry children and it was a lovely touch that we were provided with basics like bread and cheese (and wine!)
The house has a private pool and Kay and Bernie have created stunning gardens which we never tired of wandering around. With chickens, ducks, a turkey, cats, dogs and a table tennis table, there was plenty to entertain our 7 year old and 12 year old.
The house itself really does have everything you could need - our son couldn't believe there were even boxes of lego! As for the kitchen, unusually for a holiday rental, it was amazingly well equipped.
We would thoroughly recommend Las Chimeneas and hope to return soon.
Kay and Bernie are the most hospitable and welcoming neighbour's-they were incredibly generous in sharing their knowledge of the local area, their beautiful garden complete with animals with our children, and even their hen and duck eggs. The house itself is very comfortable with everything you could need, and the pool was the icing on the cake. Thank you for a memorable stay-we'll be back!
What a fabulous house. Beautiful location (overlooking the mountains and the lovely pool), peaceful and quiet, totally relaxing, plus gorgeous gardens. Well placed to visit Granada (do book the Alhambra well in advance, which we failed to do), the coast and the mountain village. We were very well looked after by Kay and Bernie who were both helpful and entertaining (and even helped us change a flat tyre). They also have the 2 best dogs in Andalucia - and an amazing collection of turkeys (my particular favourite), geese, chickens - lovely. On a more boring note, the house was clean, well set up with everything you could need (including wifi) and a great wood burning fire (which was much needed on a few of the evenings).
Plenty of space, good facilities - including a nice swimming pool - and an authentic feel. Kay and Bernie rebuilt this casita in the original style. Their house (and fascinating garden) are next door, and they are on hand to help and advise if needed. They are both charming and friendly folk who have lived in the area for many years. There is a special feel to this region and you will (quite rightly!) be advised to read Chris Stewart's Driving Over Lemons to really understand it.
Orgiva is 3km or so away and has all the facilities you need except maybe the sort of nightlife teenagers might be looking for. Granada and the coast, respectively, are each about 45 minutes drive away. You can also explore the interesting mountain villages with their unique architectural style.
There's quite a breeze that blows along the valley, but we didn't mind it even at Easter, and in the summer it would keep you cool.
We adopted three of the cats for the week, and if you're more of a dog person, they are friendly too.
Country location between the coast and the Sierra Nevada mountains. Soak up the atmosphere of Chris Stewart's 'Driving Over Lemons'. Situated in the natural park of the Alpujarra, Las Chimeneas [the chimneys] has the tranquility of the countryside with magnificent 360º views with unbelievable sunsets. Fantastic for painter too!
The amazing routes up through the mountain villages are an absolute must with incredible views around the mountains. Enjoy the local cafes for your taste of the area + free tapas [ small plates of tasty food] with every drink!
Granada- 1 hr- see the magnificent Alhambra Palace and discover the wonderful small intimate historic city. Have a Turkish bath! Walk through the old Moorish quarters.
Only 40 minutes to the coast with loads of different beaches and villages with the Chiringuitos [restaurants actually on the beach] for lunch watching the Mediterranean in front of you.
1½ hours door to door to the ski resort . [ You can see the snow topped mountains from the casita almost throughout the entire year!] Great ski-ing and sledging for all the family - frequently so warm you can ski in T shirts
Other Activities: On your doorstep (literally)enjoy homemade tea and cake at The OrgivaTeaGarden [www.orgivateagarden.com]plus the magnificent gardens; children's trail, painters' delights and all the animals including llamas, peacocks, pigs, hens, turkeys, ducks and geese!
