Huffman Pond Cabin is without a doubt the most remote and secluded vacation rental in the Terlingua area. This is THE place to be if you truly wish to escape the trappings and stresses of “civilization”. This is NOT a typical vacation rental home. It is an off-grid home powered by solar electricity and relies on a “passive cooling” design instead of modern air conditioning.

The remote location may scare off some tourists, but true outdoorsmen and nature lovers that aren’t deterred by a rough road and lack of modern AC will be richly rewarded. Bonuses for the rugged adventurers include unparalleled seclusion, amazing views, diverse wildlife and plant life, stunning night skies, rugged hiking, a spectacular canyon, several bluffs, impressive and varied geologic features, a large private pond (currently dry due to extended drought). Guest will also enjoy access to miles upon miles of rarely traveled desert roads for driving, ATVs, biking, or walking. You will also have access to the pool (a small fee is required) at the Terlingua Ranch lodge and the Christmas Mountains hiking trail.

When you’re done exploring and enjoying the natural wonders of the Huffman Pond property and surrounding area, you can retreat into the cabin. The cabin is built with stone and steel and designed for comfort, convenience, and relaxation. The original stone cabin and the flagstone floor for the entire house was built in the 70’s. The current owner expanded the original stone cabin by adding a modern living area and kitchen on what had been the large flagstone patio.

The original stone cabin was converted into a very comfortable and spacious bedroom and bathroom. Because it is all built with thick stone and shaded by the living room addition, it remains surprisingly cool on even the hottest summer days and warm on the coldest winter days. Large windows on the south and east walls of the bedroom provide excellent views of Dynamite Bluff, Little Sombrero Peak, and panoramic desert scenery.

The modern living area was added in 2010 and features an open floor plan living room, dining and kitchen. The most impressive thing about the living area is the amazing views through the many large windows. No need for wall art here. The desert provides ever changing and inspiring beauty. Less noticed, but very important are the awning windows on the northern wall, above the stone wall of the bedroom. During the summer, these windows allow hot air to escape and create a cooling convection current when one or two lower windows are opened on the shaded sides of the house. If you’re addicted to modern AC, this is not the place for you during the summer, but most people attracted to this type of property and the Big Bend will enjoy it year round.

A little history about Huffman Pond Cabin: The original owner, Ben Huffman, started building the stone cabin in 1971. He also built a stone shed just behind the small hill beside the cabin. The stone shed was behind the hill because it was used for storing dynamite. That’s right, dynamite! The rather eccentric Mr. Huffman was determined to create a pond in the valley below the cabin. He tried, and tried, and tried to accomplish this by blowing up and collapsing the bluff at the end of the valley. His hope was that it would form a natural dam. Despite his repeated efforts, the bluff, now named “Dynamite Bluff” did not yield. He ultimately hired a bulldozer to dig out the current pond and create an earthen dam. Ben had quite a reputation in the area and could often be seen riding around the ranch roads or cross country on a small motorcycle with a rifle strapped to the handlebars and dynamite strapped behind the seat. All the dynamite has been safely removed or long since detonated. However, walk out onto “Echo Ridge” that overlooks the valley, the pond and Dynamite Bluff and you may just hear the low rumble of explosions long past. If not, just shout or clap and listen for the response.

About Janet Eby

We don't own Huffman Pond Cabin, but we wish we did. Janet and I run Big Bend Vacation Rentals and manage eleven vacation rentals -all listed on VRBO. Janet takes care of all the reservations and customer inquiries. Daryl handles maintenance, websites, and facebook pages for all our properties. We both handle the cleaning and often have help from our sons, Josh and Zack and the companionship of our little dog Riley. If someone drives up to the house while you are here, it will most likely be us. If you have questions or concerns while you are here or while planning your trip, we'd be glad to help. We truly love our business and enjoy helping our guests.

We moved to Terlingua Ranch in 2004 in order the escape the rat race of the big city (Dallas). Daryl had loved this region for many years and managed to drag Janet out on a few trips. She was reluctant to leave the city but the solitude and rugged beauty of the desert and mountains finally won out. We've had some rough times since moving here, but have NEVER regretted the move. We love the land, the serenity and even the isolation. Sharing the area with visitors is our enduring pleasure. We hope to add more rentals and services in the future, but cannot imagine ever moving away.

Huffman Pond Cabin is our newest offering and we are very proud to manage it. We believe it will have a very special appeal for visitors that want to enjoy a more intense connection with the desert. This cabin is not for everyone, but those that like it will truly LOVE it.

Hiking, birding, herping, exploring and more on 88 acres of private land in the rugged Chihuahua Desert. Rugged terrain ranges from pond, valleys, arroyos, bluffs, canyons, and wide variety geologic features. The pond is dry right now due to a record drought. This is VERY unusual and we hope it will refill again soon.

Peaceful retreat, beautiful surroundings

Was beyond our expectations. Beautiful sunrises when we managed to wake up in time. More beautiful sunsets. Very quiet area. We walked around the property without any difficulty. The cabin was very well-kept and stocked with water and general spices for us to do our cooking. We were very remote from other things we wanted to see so that was the only drawback. One day the temperatures reached the upper 90s and the cabin became very warm. It took it a while for it to cool off but it was manageable.

Long drive but The beautiful scenery makes it worth while

It takes a while to get to the cabin from the highway but the property is beautiful. Great for stargazing! The cabin was clean and comfortable. We had plenty of water and were conservative with it.

Very nice and peaceful

The cabin is off the grid which is nice if you're looking to get away from city life. Took us about an hour to get to the cabin from the main hwy(118) but with the views of the mountains your really not paying attention to the time. I wasn't in any rush to get there, so I was just taking my time enjoying the ride. We drove a 2017 Ford Explorer 2wd and did fine on the dirt road. We did come to a bit of a problem going up a small hill, I called the owner and he suggested that I start at a steady pace at the bottom of the hill at about 7mph and keep it at that pace and not to stop, after that we had no issue going up. The owner was nice and helpful, thank you again. If your there and it rains then yes I highly recommend that you don't drive on the dirt road or have a 4x4 to get you through the upward parts of the road. The cabin was very nice and clean. Was equipped with pretty much everything you need. The heaters did an awesome job keeping us warm at night. The beds were comfortable to sleep on, beats waking up to a deflated air mattress.The shower was nice and they were the fastest showers I ever took lol, there was hot water which was nice. We did have cellphone service (at&t) and there was Wi-Fi as well. Sunrise was foggy and then cleared up but still enjoyed it sipping on some coffee. Sunsets were very nice. The flickering stars at night were amazing! The only thing i didn't like was that you can't have a campfire due to fire ban and the WiFi because my wife and son were on there phones 😁?. I have stayed in many nice hotels before like Hyatt, Marriott, Hard Rock, Sheraton, the list goes on but never the less, this cabin was very nice and I would definitely come back and visit again. Thank you very much for allowing us to stay there. Nov.10-12/2017

Very peaceful and comfortable!

We had a great time at Huffman Pond Cabin. The cabin was clean and had everything we needed. We were worried about the heat being that we stayed at the end of August and the cabin has no air conditioning, but it was comfortable with the windows open and the fans on. In fact, it was even chilly in the mornings.

For anyone who needs a really soft mattress, a warning that the beds are a little hard, but we didn't have a problem with them. Also, the refrigerator, while full-sized, is a bit on the small size.

The property is beautiful! The pond had lots of water in it, and there were several animal tracks around. My favorite part was the view of the Sierra del Carmen in Mexico!

We will definitely be back!

Our cancellation policy is if you cancel before 30 days of your stay, then we will refund 100% minus a $50 cancellation fee and any processing fees. If you cancel within 30 days of your stay, then a refund will depend on us being able to re-rent that time. This supersedes the cancellation policy that VRBO has on it's drop down box.
