Beautiful house and garden

  • 5 of 5

We visited this place with our familiy and enjoyed it very much. The interior of the house is modest but cosy and equipped with furnitures in 'Andalusian style'. Behind the house there is an amazing garden with orange trees, an old figue tree and many other plants. From here you have a fantastic view over the whole village, the surrounding hills and the sea.

Apart from that Frigiliana is a picturesque village. Of course it is a bit touristic, but nothing compared to the cities along the coastline.

Close to Heaven

  • 5 of 5

The location is one of the most beautiful I've experienced. The owner's information was accurate and helpful. The property was well-maintained, well-furnished, pleasant in every way. We took advantage of the excellent restaurants, some of the local sites and hiking opportunities. Be forewarned however (as the owner explained to us) that access to the apartment is by steep cobbled streets - strictly on foot. This is simply part of the package for many locations in this delighful town. Pack what you can comfortably carry and don't let the schlepp deter you. It's worth it!

Don't miss Frigiliana!

  • 5 of 5

From a distance the sun drenched village looks pasted to the hillside, a stretch of whitewashed medieval houses terraced against the face of a small mountain. The house, built on the highest level of the town, looks over red-tiled roofs and low-lying hills to the Mediterranean Sea 5 kilometers away. Access is by foot over ancient streets, paved in Moorish designs and overhung with bougainvillea. The deep, rich history of the town demands attention at almost every step; you think about the times when Moors, Christians and Jews moved peacefully through these narrow winding streets. We found the house charming, renovated to modern standards while retaining some quaint touches--the worn stairway with its uneven risers won our hearts. The place was clean, the furnishings comfortable for our party of three adults, and the neighbors friendly and helpful. In the garden behind the house we picked oranges for breakfast and lemons for afternoon drinks; we ate in outdoor splendor or walked for dinner to one or another of the nearby restaurants. In the village the pottery store featured pots from different Spanish locations--all of it appealing. It was so pleasant to be in Frigiliana that we hardly wanted to leave, though the Mediterranean beaches and caves in Nerja, and the magnificent Alhambra just an hour away couldn't be missed.

Don't pass up the chance to stay in this unbelievably beautiful spot!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your charming and insightful review of your vacation in my house and garden. The house does have an exceptional location, and it takes exceptional guests to recognise what they have found, and this warms my heart! I am taking a trip myself next month and will indeed be squeezing lemons from the garden. Best wishes, Penelope

A true Spanish oasis!

  • 5 of 5

Frigiliana is a gem, and the chance to stay at the top of this hilltop town, with amazing private gardens out your back door, and a phenomenal terrace-view out your front door, is not to be passed up. Granted, the trek up isn't ideal for grandparents, but for all that fancy themselves hill climbers, this is the place to be. The house has a non-traditional arrangement, with the full bath on the first floor and the kitchen/living room/bedrooms on the second floor - but it make for great evening cups of tea, gazing out over the rooftops and to the Mediterranean in the distance. As someone who has lived in Spain for five years, I can tell you that Frigiliana is a rare find...with a year-round population that can keep the various bars, restaurants, and small shops open, without succumbing to a fundamental loss of identity due to foreign influence. The terrace restaurant, 100 feet from your door is phenomenal, and there are numerous art galleries, bodegas, and hidden cafe/bars within a few blocks. I highly recommend a stay here to anyone who is a true hispanophile.

Garden of Eden

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this beautiful, traditional style house. The garden is definitely worth it on its own. If your idea is to relax and read then you can go right to the top of the garden where there is a shaded area, with a cool breeze, with beautiful sea views. It's a pleasant experience, especially when sipping on a lemonade, made from lemons picked from the tree!

The roof terrace is also ideal for eating your evening meal, when the sun becomes a bit cooler, with wonderful views of the village below.

A perfect getaway for a couple who want to get away from it all and a great location for visiting the bars and restaurants in the village.

The walk up the hill to the house also gives your legs and bum a good workout!

Car: recommended

Frigiliana overlooks the Med from its perch in the mountains about 4 miles from the coast. It is recognised as one of the prettiest Moorish villages in Southern Spain, has a wealth of excellent restaurants and remains relatively unspoilt.

As a resident in the village you will have access to a brand new local health club & Olympic size swimming pool. Small cobblestone streets and steps will connect you to Frigilaiana's many breathtaking vistas. There are also many interesting trips to be made into the surrounding country side, by mule or by car.

Local wines, oliveoil and fresh fruits and vegetables are abundant. With the mountains to the north and east and the sea hypothetically at your fingertips, it is hard to find a village in the South of Spain that is more enchanting.
