(PLEASE NOTE THAT THE VILLA CAN ACCOMMODATE FROM 2 to 18 PEOPLE - DIFFERENT WINGS OF THE VILLA CAN BE RENTED ACCORDING TO THE NUMBER OF GUESTS AT DIFFERENT PRICES - We can accommodate up to 18 guests at extra cost). Up to 12 guests we charge £1600 per night. Any extra guest over 12 will pay £80 per night.
This is a very special home, originally a 1st Century AD Roman residence (there are archaeological remains in the upper garden that form part of the National Collection of Archeology ain the archives of the Museo Altemps in the centre of Rome, near Piazza Navona). We have a document with full historical documentation at the villa available for our guests. The Villa has undergone several changes, from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, through to the 18th Century, when the Villa became the hunting lodge of a Cardinal from the Torlonia family, hence the name Il Cardinale. This wonderful residence has four units that can be rented together or separately. Its highlights are the two elegant reception rooms, a wonderful portico, patio, terrace and garden. There are three kitchens, two luxury master bedrooms, both with antique fireplaces, one with a bed that is bigger than a super king size bed (a Caesar size bed!), an en-suite bathroom (with a jacuzzi bath tub) and its own large terrace. One of the other very large double en-suite large bedrooms has a bathroom with shower and access to the portico, patio and garden on the ground floor. There is a further beautiful en-suite bedroom as well as three more bedrooms on the upper floor. The upstairs sitting room has a lovely antique fireplace.
The upper floor opens onto a delightful garden with an ancient Roman archaeological area, complete with comfortable garden furniture, lights, and a small cellar with a refrigerator for Summer drinks.
There are several areas for outdoor eating under spectacular Roman pine trees.
There is also a vegetable garden that is looked after by our 'ortolano', Raffaele.
On the ground floor, down a ceramic and marble staircase, there are two large reception rooms, each with a traditional fireplace, travertine marble floors, and high ceilings. One of the reception rooms, boasting two ancient Egyptians columns with Roman capitels, can be used as a dining or sitting room.
There is a very spacious kitchen, with a professional 'Ilve' gas cooker, and a large electric thermo-convection oven ideal and cooking/grilling plates for cooking at very high level.
The kitchen has a large fireplace perfect for roasting food or sitting around sipping a glass of good wine. The cellar, which is also off the kitchen, is stocked with excellent Italian wines that can be purchesed by our guests.
The rear kitchen door opens onto a functioning bread/pizza oven and a small fountain. The pizza-oven area is lit and has a seating area that allows for fun evenings for children and families making pizza. We can provide a 'pizzaiolo' to make the pizza for you.
Behind the kitchen there is a further single bedroom, with its own shower room (and separate entrance by the pizza oven).
The lower garden is wonderful, with a patio, and a portico that allow for outdoor dining, and entertaining. At one end of the large patio there is a built-in brick large barbecue and a fountain, garden lights and space for entertaining for up to 200 people. We also have an area in the lower garden that functions as a badminton court, and we provide all the necessary for playing badminton. There is a ping-pong table in the upper garden.
All around there are fruit trees and wonderfully secluded areas of the garden.
Il Cardinale is ideal for lovers of style and space in the close vicinity of Rome.
Own car recommended. However there is also public transport, two buses, 5 minutes walk away, and a train from the Settebagni station to Stazione Tiburtina and other stops in the centre of Rome only 7 minutes drive away.
There is an additional property in the upper garden. This is a lovely cottage with two further double bedrooms, shower room, kitchen, and, in one of the two rooms, a 'reversable', ingenious fireplace that can be used indoors or outdoors for cooking whilst sitting in the reserved area overlooking the vegetable garden.
The lower garden can accommodate parking for up to 10 cars. Upon special request more cars can be accommodated in the adjecent parking area that belongs to the restaurant.
I was born in Rome, live and work in London, and inherited Villa Il Cardinale from my parents three years ago. I am now looking after this wonderful property continuing the family tradition of hosting guests from all over the world with ethusiasm and in style. I WAS SELECTED AS AN EXEMPLARY OWNER BY HOMEAWAY. WE ASSIST OUR GUESTS WITH SPECIAL ATTENTION AND CARE.
Marina Wallace purchased this villa in 1960
Villa Il Cardinale is a very special residence, that makes its guests feel at home from the moment they walk in. It is very close to Rome, only 8 km from the centre, and yet it feels like a country home, with its beautiful gardens and its location at the bottom of a hill. The VIlla has a rich history and my family have loved looking after it. It is very much a family home, with all comforts and a real soul. It is great to be able to share its beauty with our guests.
The ancient Roman ruins in the upper garden are truly special. The villa used to be the home to a Roman family in the 1st century AD. Its history is overwhealming and it will make you fall in love with the villa adding a special flavour to its other wonderful features.
We have the full record of its history, and a fascinating archaeological report that is available to our guests.
The Villa has also been used by artists as an inspirational residence. We are very attentive with our guests, establishing a personal contact with them and ensuring that we fulfill their special requests and ensure the perfect stay.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would love to visit again.
We had a splendid time and the family saw a great deal of Rome, including my old schools (!), Galleria Borghese, Pincio, Pantheon, Forum, Colosseum, Maxxi Gallery, Museums (we did get to see Livia's room) and lots more on foot. We drove out to Hadrian's Villa but sadly the Acque Albule nearby closes at 6.00 (?); we also drove up to Villa Lante and swam in Lago di Vico. As you told us, driving into town was fine and we were always able to park - but then, it was August.

Villa Cardinale II is a real gem! One of those places that you just know you need to come back to. I've had a wonderful time during the 4 days Yoga retreat back in October. Marina has been an excellent host and a fabulous Yoga teacher, making sure everyone felt great during their stay. I loved every minute of my stay, including the freshly home-made food, welcoming, warm and friendly atmosphere, morning Yoga exercises, mindfulness, evening talks with a glass of wine and our trip to Rome. Thank you so much for making this such an unforgettable experience for me!
Proffessional, extremly helpful and friendly staff
Wonderful Roman villa wiht great garden
Quite simple bathrooms and toilets
What a truly amazing weekend in this beautiful house leading my first yoga retreat. The house and hosts were so warm and welcoming, both myself and all my students felt instantly relaxed and at home. The house has everything you could wish for and more, all set within stunning gardens.
Teaching in the yoga room overlooking the gardens was a real pleasure and made so much easier with all the yoga mats and equipment available. The house is really easy to reach from the airport and the whole weekend flowed effortlessly and better than I could ever have imagined. My students were very happy indeed.
I'm already looking forward to returning here next year and I'm recommending it to my fellow yoga teachers and any friends looking for a break in a beautiful setting.
I can't thank Marina and Stefania enough for their hospitality.
I organised a Crossfit retreat in June for a group of 9 and we had a wonderful stay.
The photos of the property adequately reflect what the villa is like. You can see the charm and beauty that the property holds, yet in person it is even more stunning. It feels like you're stepping into someone's villa in Ancient Rome rather than the 21st Century. Despite it being clearly full of history (which you'll find out about!) it is very well maintained, meticulously clean and all of the facilities are modern and function perfectly well.
The host, Marina, was exceptional. She made us feel so welcome that we felt like old friends by the end of the trip. I would highly recommend this location to anyone who wants to experience Rome at it's best.
Our meals were mostly catered by the restaurant across the street which I would give a high rating to also. Our breakfasts were self served buffet style which was nice and relaxed. There is a great pizza place up the road too
Here's a bit more about my experience...
On our first night Marina, the host, gave us a tour and history of the property which made you feel like you were stepping back into Ancient Rome. Despite the luxurious feel of the property, you can't help but feel comfortable and at ease in this special family home.
Our retreat was set to include a small amount of Yoga in the studio with Marina, but everyone liked it so much that we had to request more. In between Yoga and training sessions, our guests would relax around the property or take a short trip into Rome for sightseeing and shopping. There is also a pool just up the road which is ideal in the warmer months.
We had a fully catered menu which saved us the hassle of cooking for such a large group. All of the food was delicious and they did an excellent job at catering to various dietary necessities. In our group we had one person who was Gluten Free, two vegetarians and someone who was allergic to nuts and someone with allergies to shellfish.
The property itself is as stunning as it is large. It's ideal for large parties wanting to celebrate something special, but since you can also rent small parts of the property out, it's also great for small groups too.
The host recommends a local taxi company to get around and they offered us very fare rates for getting around, much cheaper than if we tried to organise transportation ourselves. I would recommend using this company for airport transfers.
I stayed at Villa Il Cardinale as part of one of Marina's yoga retreats. From the moment we started to ascend the bel poggio toward the villa, I felt like I was coming home. Super comfortable. Steffania's infectious smile and warm hospitality. Cooking meals and dining together and hours of yoga made it a perfect retreat for the week.
I stayed in the villa as a part of a fitness and yoga retreat and was incredibly impressed by the building itself - it has age, style, a sense of family and warmth of welcome. Marina and Stefania made us all welcome, settled and we were fed with beautiful local food. I cannot recommend the Villa highly enough for any type of trip to Rome - it is a special place.
Villa Il Cardinale is located right by a green hill, Bel Poggio, off Via Salaria, North of Rome, exit 9 when driving towards Roma from the motorway or form the aiports. The centre of Rome is only 8 Km away, and the nearest train stations, Settebagni and Saxa Rubra, are only 5 minutes drive. It is possible to park the car by the stations and take the train to the centre of Rome, Piazzale Flaminio, or to one of the main stations in Rome, Stazione Tiburtina. The Villa is situated opposite an excellent restaurant, Ristorante Bel Poggio, that can also cater for our guests at the Villa.
Up the hill, 10 minutes walk, there is a tennis club, Club Bel Poggio, with a swimming pool, open air in Summer and covered in Winter, open from 10 am to 7pm (prices - to be paid directly to the Tennis Club-Mon-Fri €10 for the whole day; €8 half day after 2pm; week-end €13 for the whole day; €10 after 2pm). The Club also includes tennis courts, a playground, a small gym, a restaurant and a coffee bar. The ringroad, the GRA, is very close to the the Villa, making it possible to travel to other sites outside Rome without entering the city and thus avoiding the urban traffic. There is a large shopping centre, Porta di Roma, 10 minuets drive from the Villa. The closest inhabited area is called Settebagni (it takes its name from the Seven Cisterns, Sette Bagni, that used to provide water for the gardens of Villa Il Cardinale in the 1st Century AD!) is 5 minutes drive away, and it has groceries, a pharmacy, a church, a doctor's surgery, an optician, a dentist, a patisserie, a newsagent, a great supermarket, and small shops for all daily necessities.
