Description

Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday apartment in Álora - The Penthouse in Alora

A self-catering rental with views a Moorish Castle, Alora town and countryside.

This is a luxurious penthouse apartment with direct lift access into the living room. It has been furnished in a contemporary style with high quality fitments and furnishings. There are two terraces one of which is exceptionally large with panoramic views of the countryside and Alora´s Moorish Castle which is perched on top of a hill and looks particularly spectacular and romantic at night when illuminated. Alora is a traditional Andalucian whitewashed village sitting on top of the hills of El Hacho which is 400 metres above sea level. As well as being able to soak in the atmosphere of a traditional Spanish working village, with its narrow, winding, cobbled streets and local shops, you will find a wide variety of restaurants and tapas bars. Alora is very popular with golfers, walkers, climbers and watersports enthusiasts as it is only 12 km from the beautiful lakes of El Chorro. It has excellent communication links with Malaga, Antequerra, Ronda, the airport and the Costa del Sol.

About Helen Matthews

We are a couple from London and decided to escape the rat race and started a idyllic life here in Alora. My husband is an ex-chef in restaurants in London and hotels back in the Far East while my line of work is public relations.

Helen Matthews purchased this apartment in 2008

Why Helen Matthews chose Guadalhorce (Costa del Sol)

We saw this property when our builder was still constructing it. All the 5 units were sold to local Spanish residents except the Penthouse. He showed the penthouse to us and we could not believe the views when we reached the top and lead us to the two terraces. We bought it on the spot because of the views and the location which is in the historic part of town, very close to the shops, banks and restaurants. It was one of the best decision we had made.

What makes this apartment unique

The top floor of the penthouse is not shared with any other flat. The lift goes straight to the living room and with the help of a key opens right into the apartment, very impressive indeed. The plot of the building is at an elevated position and so it has a commanding view of the countryside, mountains and the Moorish Castle. We will forever have these views.

Lovely apartment in Malaga

  • 5 of 5

This apartment in Alora is truly beautiful, with two terraces providing views of the castle and the white town below. The apartment is well-appointed, and Helen and Steve are very helpful. The guest is even provided with a welcome basket with items of their choice - wine, coffee, cheese, bottled water, etc. Alora is well situated for day trips to towns like Malaga, Cordoba, etc. Highly recommended apartment.

EXCEPTIONAL [ deliberately in higher case!] by all criteria

  • 5 of 5

I was fortunate enough to spend a month in this unbelievably wonderful property. If anything, it is even more wonderful than the photos suggest, not least because the photos can't show the oh so many very thoughtfully chosen extras.

All a person could possibly need is supplied - in abundance, and lots more as well. The large terrace, even in March, was a heavenly place, huge, with a sizeable retractable canopy and washline, and, most importantly, the views must be the best in Álora.

It is literally within 2 minutes from the delightful hustle and bustle of the town's centre, and the top quality eatery that is Casa Abilio.

Álora itself was for me a hidden gem - It's relatively easy to access from Málaga airport. It's large enough to have a good range of shops and eateries, but small enough such that the people are warm and friendly, and the views on any of the short walks round about are truly phenomenal.

.......and I could use all those superlatives above for Helen and Steve. They have their whole package perfected to the highest possible level. From the initial welcome to the drop off at the station, [how thoughtful is that!] everything is done soooo very well, and with such a lovely friendly manner.

Methinks I'll be back!!!

Excellent apartment.

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay in the apartment which was completely as described. It was clean, comfortable, well equipped and we were able to make use of the terraces even though it was November. The dining room was very nice and light for breakfast. Wifi was excellent and there was even the bonus of British TV albeit with a few problems with buffering.

Helen & Steve provided a high quality of customer service with great attention to detail. They found us another garage as I was a bit worried about access to the apartment with a UK low slung 2 seater - not an unusual problem for us in Andalusian hill towns. The welcome pack was great and customized for our exact requirements.

Alora is a nice Spanish hill town with a fair selection of restaurants. I'd recommend De Knas for tapas and Casa Abilio for finer dining both within easy walking distance. If you fancy a day trip to Malaga use the train, I'd recommend walking downhill to the station (20 mins) and catching the bus back up the hill. The El Chorro gorge is also well worth a visit.

Great stay, perfect location, all conveniences!

  • 5 of 5

This apartment was exactly as seen on the web-site. Well equipped with all the conveniences needed for a very comfortable stay. What the web-site does not show is the feeling of relaxation, safety and comfort once you are inside this private retreat. A really welcoming feeling after a hectic day of sightseeing and discovery at the some of the numerous locations that are available for day trips. The welcome hamper from the owners (Steve & Helen) was customized to our preferences, and all contact with them was prompt, easy and efficient. We were met on arrival in Alora and helped orientate ourselves with the surroundings and helped with our luggage on departure. If you are thinking of renting this apartment, don't hesitate.....you may miss the opportunity to spoil yourself!

Fabulous

  • 5 of 5

Everything about our stay was fabulous. Booking was straightforward and Helen and Steve responded promptly to all of our queries. We did not want to hire a car so arranged for Helen and Steve to collect us from the airport. We were collected at arrivals and taken on a quick drive around the town before they took us up to the big Mercadona to do a shop. At the apartment, they had also left a really generous welcome pack, which we had been able to choose ourselves before arrival.

The apartment itself is fantastic. It had everything we needed for our stay and the views are stunning – we never tired of looking out across at the surrounding hills. Having the lift go straight into the apartment was a fabulous novelty!

Alora is a great town – very Spanish and the locals are friendly and put up with our limited and somewhat suspect grasp of the language. We did not miss having a car because, although some of the streets are very steep, everything within Alora is within walking distance.

Helen and Steve collected us again at the end of our stay and took us back to the airport. They were great hosts – not intrusive but helpful and willing to give advice when we bumped into them in the town.

We aim to re-book for next year.

Perfect place, perfect hosts!

  • 5 of 5

We had the most wonderful time at Helen and Steven's apartment! We couldn't recommend it more highly... the penthouse itself is beautiful, with two lovely decks facing different views and sun aspects, beautiful living space and functional little kitchen, and great bedrooms. The location in the heart of Alora couldn't be better. Best of all were the kindness and attentiveness of our hosts - Helen and Steven; the airline lost one of our bags on the way, and Helen was critical in ensuring it's timely retrieval. We were so grateful!

I mentioned in their guestbook upon leaving that I so appreciated their attention to detail - the plush white robes, the binoculars, the welcome basket suited to our tastes - so many things which surprised us and made us so comfortable and happy! I only mentioned the one thing I thought was missing - umbrellas by the door for unexpected rainy days - and Helen sent me an email upon our return home with photos of their new umbrellas in their new spot by the door! We are so impressed with everything they offered us... we want to bring my parents back for another trip!

Thank you Helen and Steven!! - Renee and Ryder, California USA

Owner's Response: We search high and low to improve our service. Renee and Ryder's suggestion of providing umbrellas were not just taken on board at the penthouse where they booked but also at our other holiday let properties (villa and the other penthouse) because it is such a brilliant idea. We learn so much from our holidaymakers.

Alora is a traditional Andalucian whitewashed village sitting on top of the hills of El Hacho, which is 400 metres above sea level. Agricultural produce is mainly olive, almonds, goat milk for cheese and oranges and lemons. Alora has great train links to the Costa del Sol for the beaches, the City of Malaga, Seville, Granada and Cordoba. What is great about the place is its central location, quite accessible to Antequerra, Historic Ronda, Jerez to sample sherry in the bodegas. As well being able to soak in the atmosphere of a traditional Spanish working village, with its narrow, winding, cobbled streets and local shops, you will find a wide variety of restaurants and tapas bars.

Alora is very popular with golfers, walkers and climbers as it is only 20 minutes from the beautiful Andalucian Lake District of El Chorro, famous for its gorge and rock climbing, water sports, fishing or just go for a picnic and a dip in the lake.

Golf courses like Laura Golf, Alhuarin Golf, Parador Golf, Campanilla Golf are only 20 to 30 minutes drive away while Antequera Golf is 40 minutes drive away.

A lot of travelers use Alora as a base to do traveling around because of its proximity to the touring area of Ronda, Seville, Jerez, Granada, Cordoba, Antequera, Torcal National Park and the City of Malaga and a train ride away to the beaches of Costa del Sol.

Alora has abundance of beautiful scenery and memorable landscapes whichever direction you look. In specific terms, to the north is the Central Limestone Arch with enormously impressive ranges like to Sierra de Huma (1,191 metres) and the Pass of Los Gaitanes. To the west is the Sierrad de Aguas (949 metres). It has excellent communication links with the City of Malaga, El Chorro, Antequera, Ronda, Torcal National Park, Seville, Cordoba and Madrid. To go to the nearest beach, Malaga or Torremolinos, is just 30 minutes away while golf courses are also 30 minutes drive away in various directions.
