About the property

3 bedroom bungalow in a small hamlet in the heart of the Dordogne countryside

“Petit Reve” is situated in the picturesque hamlet of Braulen Haut with splendid views of the surrounding Dordogne countryside. It is just 10 minutes drive from Sarlat, which is regarded as the tourist capital of the Perigord Noir, and within easy reach of the many attractions in the area.

Guests say the spacious covered patio and pool, right next to the house, are key strengths of our property. Whether relaxing with a good book, sunbathing, dining ‘al fresco’ or having fun in the pool, you have the perfect facilities you need for an enjoyable holiday. The garden has grassed areas where children can play safely.

Indoors, the rooms are modern and light. The lounge has plenty of space for relaxing and dining. A good-quality TV receives the range of English channels on Freeview, with a DVD player and a good range of films. The internet connection is a good speed. The three double bedrooms ensure that sleeping arrangements are separate from the rest of the house.

It’s modern living in a beautiful rural setting!

Getting there:

By car – Takes about 8 hours, in one stint, from Calais. Find the A20 motorway heading south to Limoges and Brive. Take the exit 55 for Souillac, just south of Brive, and the house is about 25 minutes away. We’ll send you clear directions.

By air – If you do not fancy the drive, there are cheap flights available from various British airports to Brive (30 mins) NEW RYANAIR SERVICE FROM STANSTEAD TO BRIVE began April 2014, Bergerac (90 mins) and Limoges (2hrs) where you can hire a car.

If you are prepared to travel light, the cost of flights + a hire car can be much cheaper than driving, particularly out of season. My last 9-day visit, October 2015, Liverpool to Limoges, flights = £45 return (Ryanair), parking at airport = £40, hire car = £190 (VW Polo).

About George Crowther

We had camped and caravaned near Sarlat since 1987. We fell in love with the area almost immediately. The beautiful villages and country markets; the stunning scenery; the wide range of events and activities, particularly in the summer. So ... we decided to buy a house.

George Crowther purchased this bungalow in 2003

Why George Crowther chose Calviac-en-Périgord

We wanted a property that would be easy to maintain and great for summer holidays with our family; it had to be near Sarlat, because it's the most fantastic town; and it had to be in a peaceful rural setting. It took us almost two years to find the right house, but 'Petit Reve' (Little Dream) fulfilled all our needs, and more!

What makes this bungalow unique

Location, location, location! Braulen Haut is a very sleepy hamlet, but it's smack bang in the centre of the most beautiful tourist area. Ten minutes to Sarlat (follow my route on the back roads to avoid the summer traffic), five minutes to the river, and close to lots of the main tourist attractions in the area. Ironically, as we've seen it all, we're not great sightseers now. Give me a cold beer, a game of petanque, a dip in the pool and a good meal, and that's my idea of a great day!

The house has a large living room, with a dining area at one end, and a stone fireplace with a wood-burning stove for cosy evenings. The south-facing aspect of the house has a spacious covered patio. This is next to the large 10mx5m swimming pool which, with its roman steps, is ideal for young children. The outdoor area provides perfect facilities for a relaxing holiday, where you can cool off, snooze or read your book in privacy. The kitchen window looks out over farmland and woods, with glimpses of typically-Perigordian houses and farms. It is suitably equipped with fitted units, a cooker and fridge (washer, tumble-dryer and freezer in the garage), with ample space for cooking and occasional dining. A small room next to the kitchen acts as your larder, drinks-cooling room (another fridge) and a place to keep the loungers.

Beautiful house, within a very peaceful location.

  • 5 of 5

The house is very well set out with the sleeping area at one end and the living and outdoor at the other. The sitting room opens out to the deck, leading to the pool. the pool the pool is wonderful and the children young and old enjoyed a dip every day! Such a calm and peaceful location with lovely views to the back of the house. There is everything in the house for a very comfortable stay, the beds were made and sustenance in the fridge, which was very welcome after a long journey. George, the owner could not have been more helpful. He sent us information before we set off so that we could plan our holiday and there was plenty of information when we got to the house. We would go again in a flash, but we have exhausted the area now having been many times.

Genuinely terrific

  • 5 of 5

Just back from two weeks at Petit Reve. We looked at the Homeaway reviews and decided to trust them and we’re delighted we did. It was our eighth Gite holiday in France and a strong contender for best ever. The reasons are pretty straightforward.

1. It was clean. Really clean. We were getting a bit sick of “character French gite” translating as “it’s filthy dirty”. Petit Reve was spotless.

2. It was incredibly well equipped. Small touches as well as the big things. First gite ever to have a stock of English plug adapters. Okay we’d brought our own but it shows the thinking that’s gone into trying to anticipate guest needs. Incidentally - best wifi in France to date.

3. The welcome pack was terrific. So we REALLY didn’t need to go to the supermarket first night (and could have left it until Monday).

4. Geographical location. If you drew a map with say Rocamadour in the east, Hautefort in the North, Bergerac in the west and the Lot river in the south and then stuck a pin in the middle you’ve pretty much got Petit Reve. Sarlat 10 minutes.

5. Actual location. A small peaceful hamlet. No neighbour noise (our sincere apologies to the neighbours for our nine years old’s volume in the pool)

6. The pool. Look, each to their own. It’s not heated but we found it plenty warm enough. Oh - and beautifully clean

7. Is it really private? As we explained when we booked we’d had a couple of experiences where ‘private pool’ actually meant either the rare occasions when the owner wasn’t in it or feeling as if you are depriving the owner/family of use of their pool. George struck the perfect balance between interested/helpful/making sure we had everything, with discretion. Given that he was across the Atlantic during our stay that was good going!

8. Cost and value for money. Hesitate to put this in really as we’re strongly considering a repeat booking and very much hope George holds his prices!

Two things to mention. The photos don’t do the place justice. When we first looked at the photos we thought it seemed a bit – well pre-fab - possibly because the log shot of the pool doesn't do justice to the garden space. It isn’t pre fab at all. It’s a lovely single storey cottage. Also for example there are cushioned pool loungers and enough space to put them out in the sun round the pool.

Secondly the only suggestion would be to have some outside lighting for the pool patio area (or maybe we didn’t find it!).

A really good holiday.

Fantastic quiet rural location

  • 4 of 5

The bungalow was spotlessly clean on our arrival and was in a beautiful, peaceful rural location. The large pool was a hit for all the family, warm enough and well maintained. George provided great advice and instructions prior and during our stay. WIll definitely recommend to friends.

Wonderful holiday in a lovely property

  • 5 of 5

We had the most blissful stay at Petit Reve this summer. This beautiful, well-cared for property with a lovely pool was the ideal base for a holiday for a family who love peace and quiet as much as they do the chance to get active!

Petit Reve is situated near Sarlat, so we were spoilt for exquisite scenery, delicious local food and the chance to kick back and relax in one of the most beautiful parts of France. We loved the of being able to stay somewhere quiet and idyllic, but we also explored ancient castles, churches and towns very nearby. Add to that the numerous cycle paths (and potential to hire if you haven't brought your own), canoeing along the Dordogne River and delicious local food and we had the dream holiday.

Owner, George, was the epitome of thoughtful and helpful, making the booking process easy. He gave us tips, not only on great local spots to visit, markets to experience and restaurants to try but even on the best route to drive through France to reach Petit Reve.

We really have had an excellent holiday and would recommend a stay at Petit Reve to anyone.

Lovely stay, great pool!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I had a lovely stay at Petit a Reve. The main draw for us was the amazing pool and terrace. This was exactly what we were looking for from a holiday. Set in a peaceful location we could relax and read, then keep dipping in and out of the pool without being disturbed by others. The house itself is very well kept. It had all of the items you would expect and was very clean on arrival. As well as "chilling out" we also did a bit of exploring and visited a few of the local towns and villages. We used the information provided for this and it was really useful as a starting point. The house also has wifi so we used this for a bit of research as well. Domme was one of our favourites with amazing views over the dordogne river. We would definitely recommend this house and are already contemplating a return visit next year. Thanks for a lovely stay!

“Petit Reve” is located in a quiet hamlet, just out of earshot of the road between Sarlat (10km) and Souillac (20km), which makes for easy access to the many places to visit in the area.

Sarlat will be your abiding memory of this holiday - it's the prime location in the Perigord Noir. It has more medieval buildings per square mile than any other town in Europe and an abundance of restaurants, cafes and bars. The market each Saturday is amazing and, in summer, the street entertainers in the evening are marvellous.

Far too many day trips to mention them all, but canoeing (for softies) on the Dordogne is popular, there is an outdoor pursuits centre 5 minutes from the house, more chateaux than you can shake a stick at, and a country market in one town/village or another on almost every day of the week.

The local food is scrumptious - we'll recommend lots of places to eat to suit all budgets.

Musts – Saturday market in Sarlat; Lascaux Caves (30 mins); Domme (30 mins) market on Thursday and viewpoint over the Dordogne valley; Rocamadour (1 hour) a medieval town perched high on a rocky outcrop, is the most visited site in France after Versailles; Monpazier a bastide town with a medieval festival in July.

The local English-speaking paper, 'The Connexion', had this article in July 2012.

'Sarlat footpath network opens - Around 300km of footpaths have been officially opened in the 13 communes around Sarlat. There are several circuits, which are linked together by adjoining paths. Maps for each commune can be found in the local tourist offices. There are plans to publish a map showing routes for the whole of the Sarlat area.'

Footpaths in the area are well marked, and the GR6 (Grand Randonee), a trans-France footpath runs through this area. Great walking and great grub in the villages; particularly good in spring and autumn when the weather is not too hot.
