Overview

About the property

3 Bedrooms, 2 Bathrooms, Sleeps 5 (+optional ensuite room available for 2)

Classic Tuscan villa in the gracious hill town of Barga, a lively center of the arts with celebrated jazz and opera festivals, extraordinary restaurants, cafes and shops. The villa is set in a private compound, surrounded by an enormous terrace and walled garden planted in grapes, herbs, olives and fruit trees, with stunning views over the Lucca countryside and the marble Apuan Alps.

Old Barga is largely a pedestrian town with steep narrow streets little changed since medievil days. All roads seem to lead to the impressive cathedral at the top of the hill. Vicolo Del Duomo is located very close to the cathedral with which it shares fantastic views.

Inside, Vicolo del Duomo's terrace level offers a spacious living area with terracotta floors, divided into a comfortably appointed living room, kitchen and dining room. A full bathroom is located off a foyer to the rear. The second story of the house offers three bedrooms, (two double-bedded, one single) and a second full bath. All of the rooms have wood parquet floors, and much of the furnishing is in antique local chestnut.

Equipment includes a laundry room, a fully-outfitted kitchen with stainless steel range (five high-power gas burners and electric convection oven), dining service, ironing facilities, towels and linens.

A separate 16th century Annex and 800-year-old Medieval convent with four-meter-high arched windows also stand in the compound. For parties of up to seven, 2-3 additional guests can be accommodated in a family style suite with separate wc in the Annex.

Available from 5 days to one month.

About Michael Richardson

Michael & Jane bought the house from a long serving National Geographic correspondant and author who had made it his home.

Though originally from Liverpool, they have lived in Aberdeen, Scotland for many years but love to get to Italy whenever they can.

Michael is an engineer and Jane an art teacher.

Why Michael Richardson chose Barga

Breathtakingly beautiful views, from the summit of the most welcoming and unspoiled hill town with shops and restaurants in Western Tuscany. A food lover's paradise.

What makes this villa unique

Walking distance from a dozen superb restaurants and caffes, at prices that defy credibility. A nearly undiscovered gem of a Medieval/Renaissance town, its streets and piazzas lined with elegant palazzos and churches, its commercial district a cornucopia of local culinary products. A stronghold of ancient traditions -- in food, in customs, and in the generosity of its people.

Northern Tuscany is a beuatiful forested and mountainous area with great food and traditions. However it is not remote as there traditional industires and commerce based around the Serchio river which provide prosperity and keep the community alive with activities, traditions, markets, restaurants etc. Careful planning control means the area retains it appeal with chocolate box ancient villages clinging to the sides of steep hils. Fantastic!
