Description

Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday cottage in Gloucester - The Cottage

Grade II listed self-catering rental suitable for families, walkers or lovers!

The Cottage, at Green Court Holiday Lets is on the ground floor of the East Wing in a very special Grade II listed, holiday let in the beautiful Cotswold village of Chalford. Just a short drive away is the 'Capital of the Cotswolds' Cirencester, Painswick, Cheltenham, Stroud, the antiques center of Tetbury, the World Heritage City of Bath, Bourton-on-the-Water, Stonehenge, Cardiff, The Forest of Dean and much more. The recently refurbished accommodation comprises a small porch, opening into a modern kitchen/living area complete with wood burner. There are 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom sleeping a maximum of 6 with 1 double, 1 twin and an overflow double sofa bed in the living room area. The property benefits from a small private terrace and garden. The cottage annex forms part of a large listed property, once occupied by the owner of one of the local mills. The cottage part of the house is believed to be about 400 years old in contrast to the more 'modern' Georgian West Wing of the house added around 1820 by the mill owner. Note: Also lovely 2 bed/2 bath Loft available, also listed on HomeAway (sleeping 6 max).

Chalford - the Alpine Village of the Cotswolds: Chalford is in some of the most beautiful countryside in the whole range of the Cotswolds. Nestled in the Golden Valley, one of Stroud's Five Valleys, Chalford is described as the Alpine Village due to its deep, well-wooded valleys. A walkers paradise with beauty around every corner.

Chalford was once a centre for the wool industry, with many beautiful old mills dotted through the valley, and the old Thames and Severn Canal running along the Valley bottom. Many houses you still can't drive to and the community of Chalford has a network of old donkey tracks for delivering goods and groceries.

The Cotswolds : The Cotswolds is 'quintessentially English' and still unspoiled. From Chalford and beyond you can enjoy the honey-coloured stone of the area, the dry-stone walls, the beautiful manor houses and quaint cottages both on and off the tourist trail.

Nearby are a myriad of activities from lazing around close to home, walking the Cotwold Way or the Five Valleys, enjoying the sights of places including Bath, Cirencester, Stow-on-the-wold or Bibury, playing golf, visiting Cotswold Wildlife Park, Prinknash Abbey or frolicking in The Cotswold Water Park ....

Please note: There is also a beautiful 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom loft available to rent either with the Cottage or separately. Check out listing # 1056073.

About Anna Simson

My husband and I fell in love with our beautiful Grade II listed home in the Cotswolds. We bought it in 2005 and have been lovingly refurbishing it since along with occasional help (and hindrance) from our young daughter, Freya, and our playful chocolate Labrador, Revel.

Anna Simson purchased this cottage in 2005

Why Anna Simson chose Cotswold district

We already knew the village of Chalford - the Alpine Village as it is often known - and loved the strong community feel, the beautiful valley and walks plus being so accessible from across the country.

What makes this cottage unique

Where to start? There are so many things to do from staying nearby and enjoying the walks, the river, the fresh air and beautiful Cotswold villages to travelling a little further and seeing the regency town of Bath or the spires of Oxford or the race courses, the polo, the wildlife park, playing golf, fishing ..... Even a day-trip to London is possible with a 1.25 hour train journey into Paddington.

Chalford Cottage

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here with our 3 children (aged 14, 11 and 4) and we all had a wonderful time. The cottage was very traditional and cosy but also had everything that a family would need. It was very clean and tidy, and we would definitely recommend it. The location is ideal with plenty to see and do in the area and the village of Chalford itself is very picturesque. The owners are a very friendly and accommodating couple. Excellent all round.

Warm Cotswold Welcome, Wonderful Experience

  • 5 of 5

We were two retired Canadian couples on a three week motoring adventure through the UK. This was one of our most memorable stops. The cottage was well equipped and very comfortable. Owner Anna went out of her way to make us feel at home, offering to stock the kitchen for us before arrival, giving us excellent advice on finding our way there, and greeting us warmly on our arrival. Very knowledgeable about the local area, she soon had us pointed to a wonderful pub further up the hill, and giving us careful directions on how to find other attractions nearby. There was an excellent grocery store in Stroud, so self-catering was a breeze. We drove extensively in the countryside, visiting the Bombay Sapphire Distillery in Laverstoke, the SS Great Britain in Bristol and Stratford-upon-Avon. As it turned out, Stroud was an ideal "centre of operations" for our visit.

One word of caution - the road leading up to the cottage is a single lane, and is narrow in places. If you meet another car on route, it is sometimes necessary to back up and pull off in order to let the other car pass. Everyone is very good about this, and it keeps speed and noise to a minimum, but if you are driving a large people mover or van that you don't know well, it might prove challenging.

In all, a wonderful visit. I would love to return to this cottage again, and would certainly recommend it to my family and friends.

Beautiful and charming cottage

  • 4 of 5

We had a delightful stay at Green Court. The cottage is extremely charming and very comfortable. Everything we needed was there including some groceries that Anna picked up for us. Anna and Chris could not have been more helpful. They were available for whatever questions we had. They gave us excellent information for making the most out of the area. The location was a perfect place to base ourselves as we explored the Cotswold's.

We really enjoyed our stay.

Charming place in nice location. Owners live in adjoining house and were very helpful. The other rental unit is above -- we were a bit annoyed that it was apparently being cleaned rather late one night. Access is via some very narrow streets, so driving can be an adventure.

Quaint cottage in an idyllic Cotswold setting

  • 5 of 5

Had a really nice, comfortable weekend here with friends. The cottage is perfectly sized for a party of four adults (more than that would be a bit of a squeeze) and two little ones, and has everything you need for a weekend stay, including a barbecue (which we made good use of!). The town of Chalford is picturesque, if a little hair–raising to drive through, and the view from the cottage itself it beautiful. Very reasonably priced too, would definitely recommend to others.

Chalford is in some of the most beautiful countryside in the whole range of the Cotswolds (and even the country). Nestled in the Golden Valley, one of Stroud's Five Valleys, Chalford is described as the Alpine Village with its steep hills and houses perched along small donkey tracks. The narrow High Street winds its way through the village past an amazing array of characterful cottages. Chalford was once a centre for the wool industry, with many Listed mills dotted along the old Thames and Severn Canal. Many houses you still can't drive to.

In the village is a small shop run by volunteers selling a selection of lovely organic goodies and a short walk away are some great pubs for beer, wine, good food and stunning sunsets.
