About the property

Self-catering cottage with Accessible accommodation, local walks, golf courses

Nature lover’s secret hideaway, Birchcroft nestles at the end of a winding lane, surrounded by rhododendron bushes in over an acre of land and enjoys walks into the local woodland. This beautiful chalet bungalow offers Accessible accommodation with ground floor bedrooms and bathrooms and is large enough for two families. There is a new ramp to the front door with large turning circle. All rooms are of a good size with a particularly large lounge. Step onto the ample terrace and enjoy breathtaking views of the local landscape, with Longham lakes in the distance. Wild life including deer, foxes, rabbits, and many species of birds are often seen in the garden. For the children there is a large rear garden laid to lawn but the boundaries are unsecured and lead directly into 19 acres of woodland. Though secluded, Birchcroft is only 6 miles from Bournemouth beaches and all the town’s facilities, has an ample supply of excellent pubs and restaurants in walking distance, [you can walk to The Angel Pub though the woods at the bottom of the garden but remember a torch for the return journey!] as well as many well known golf courses [Parkstone, Ferndown, Isle of Purbeck].

Accessible Accommodation: Quality In Tourism has awarded Birchcroft Mobility 1 & 2, Hearing 1 and Visual 1, so we can accommodate part time wheelchair users as well as people with hearing and visual difficulties. We have a wet room with wheeled shower stool, electric single bed, electric stand-up chair and a loop system. We have flashing smoke alarms and a personal alarm. There is a ramp to the front door and easy access to the terrace and the back garden. The front garden is flat with tarmac driveways. We have a perching stool for the kitchen and an armed dining room chair to help the elderly. The paddle staircase to the first floor is not suitable for those with disabilities, but we have 2 downstairs bedrooms, one with an extra wide door to accommodate a wheelchair. Please email owner for our accessibility statement for more details and items that can be provided free of charge to make your holiday so much easier for less able people.

Walkers and Cyclists Welcome Awards: We at BIRCHCROFT are very proud to announce that we have received from Quality In Tourism both of these prestigious awards and now look forward to welcoming Walkers or Cyclists to our property.

For Walkers we have boot removers and a bench to sit on at the front door as well as Ordnance Survey maps of the area for your use. The wet room is very useful for hanging wet coats, over trousers and muddy boots with a special folding wall hanging rack. A First aid kit is always available. For those who prefer a gentle stroll in the immediate vicinity, the back garden has paths into the local woodlands and rights of way to the local pub where a good pub lunch is available. There is also a very pleasant walk by the nearby River Stour and one to Dorset Lakes and the picturesque Hampreston Village Church.

For Cyclists we have a secure storage for up to 8 bicycles at no extra expense and Ordnance Survey maps of the area are available for your use. There is a bicycle repair shop just 1/2 a mile away.

We recycle all suitable waste products, use organic cleaning products and monitor water usage. We have our own septic tank that processes all sewerage waste. We encourage our guests to book via email and our websites and do not print any brochures unless specifically asked by our clients. We are replacing all light bulbs with energy efficient ones and use low voltage lighting in nearly all areas. Our gas hot air central heating system is one of the most efficient systems.

Our latest addition is the conversion of our summer house into a play area for children complete with toy kitchen, table and chairs, safety dartboard and toy cars, etc. This has proved very popular with our younger visitors.

Beach hut hire. Birchcroft is located only 6 miles from the 7 miles of golden sands that make up Bournemouth beaches. They stretch from Hengistbury Head [NT] overlooking Christchurch harbour, passed Bournemouth and Boscombe piers to the world famous Sandbanks peninsula with its luxury houses. On the quieter Southbourne stretch we have our own Beach Hut. It is 7 miles from Birchcroft and can be hired on a weekly basis. It contains chairs, gas stove, cutlery, china and some beach toys. Please contact the owner for more details.

About HolidayInDorset - Mrs S Hall

I have lived in the Bournemouth area all my life and my family goes back 3 generations of local people.Though I have travelled the world I am always drawn back to the safe beaches, lovely woods, lush valleys and rolling plains of the Dorset countryside.

HolidayInDorset - Mrs S Hall purchased this cottage in 1962

Why HolidayInDorset - Mrs S Hall chose Ferndown

I am the owner of Birchcroft and it has been in my family since my father bought the land in 1962 and then built the house himself. The outstanding views down the Stour valley with magnificent sunsets always amaze me. My children adored visiting grandparents at Birchcroft because there were so many paths to wander through the woods, so many places to play hide and seek and so much wildlife to watch.

What makes this cottage unique

The sunsets over the Stour valley, the amazing wildlife and the quiet mornings with the mist rising and the sun filtering though never cease to inspire me. You feel in the middle of the countryside and yet you are only 5 miles from the centre of Bournemouth with its shops, cinemas, piers, beaches and night-life. Access to the rest of Dorset, many National Trust properties, miles of golden sands, 2 harbours and the magnificent New Forest is very easy. Birchcroft an ideal base for so many different types of holidays. And don't forget we are Mobility 2 rated so bringing elderly relatives on holiday with you is so easy. Also we can now provide extra items to help the elderly [and save you boot space!] at no extra cost. We have just turned the summerhouse into a playhouse for children under 8 years old. It has a play kitchen, complete with play food, plates, etc, table and chairs, safety dartboard and some toy cars. The kids are thrilled with it so come and try with your grandchildren or small children.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Great few days. Lovely setting and kids had a great time in the garden and woods, as weather was cold but dry. House was very good – loved the log fire!! Would definitely recommend and come again. Feb 09. Date: May 21, 2010. Review by - Marion, Peter, Rosaline & Newy. We had a wonderful second visit. The house is extremely well equipped and spotlessly clean with all the comforts of home and the grounds that the house stands on have to be seen to be believed. The wild life and scenery is breathtaking. The land is teeming with rabbits, squirrels, foxes and many varieties of bird life. The Birchcroft TV was utterly amazing and we felt humbled in being able to watch the baby Blue Tits in their nest with both parents popping in and out but especially the Mother who was kept busy all day long and snuggling down with her babies at night. We made the most of the veranda where we could relax all day long. Mrs Hall and her team were only a phone call away for help or advice."

Lovely stay in a lovely property

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our weekend stay in this property. Very comfortable accommodation, everything necessary for a great stay, including children's plates, cups etc. Well stocked with helpful books, maps etc. The grandchildren really enjoyed the summerhouse and the play kitchen equipment and play food, also the set of cars. The large garden was enjoyed by all, our grandson thought it was amazing. Enjoyed the wildlife that came into the garden, rabbits, squirrels, woodpeckers, finches and wrens. Also a good location, lovely views and a short drive to the beaches at Bournemouth, Boscombe and Poole. A big thank you to Sonia for all her help in making our stay so enjoyable.

Owner's Response: Dear Rosemary Many, many thanks for all your lovely comments. We had only just converted the summer house for the children to use and we are so pleased that it works and they really enjoyed it. New curtains in the lounge and bedrooms are on order and will be fitted later this year. We look forward to welcoming you back at some time in the future and would like to tell you that return guests booking direct with us get a 5% reduction on the current price. Regards Sonia, owner

Amazing & Wonderful cottage

  • 5 of 5

Birchwood Cottage in Ferndown, Dorset was so beautiful. The driveway would have fitted two or three cars but we came in my dad’s 7 seater Chrysler. There were 7 of us in total; me, my husband Kris, my stepdad Philip, my two sons aged 3&7 and my niece aged 6 and my nephew aged 5. The cottage itself was massive and could have fitted another family. On the front garden beside the long driveway was a big playhouse which contained everything the children needed to keep themselves entertained. Inside the cottage there were 4x big bedrooms and we all stayed on the ground floor where the children shared their granddads bedroom with him; which also had an ensuite with walk in shower and toilet. The kitchen contained all the necessities including washing machine & drier as well as a dishwasher which is ideal for travelling with so many kids. The back garden is big and contained a walk way to the woods( which i unfortunately didn’t get to walk through but my husband Kris and my stepdad Phil did walk through and stated that it took them about 15-20 minutes to walk to the Angel pub and another 15-20 minutes walk back)

The only thing which may just need amending are the amount of signage inside the cottage; there maybe a bit too many (?) Other than that, Sonia the owner is lovely as she introduced herself on our first day and Mary the keeper was also there on our first day and came again on Thursday to finish the gardening. The cottage was 7 minutes drive to Wonderland Adventure (ideal for a day out for kids aged 10&under) and Bournemouth beach was amazing and only 20-30minutes drive from the cottage.

We would definitely recommend this cottage and book this again if were to stay in Dorset again. Thank you Sonia and the team.x

Beautiful, peaceful setting.

Very comfortable house with everything you could need. Excellent attention, care and advice on local facilities given by Sonia and Mary, right down to leaving wine, biscuits. And a birthday card for my daughter’s special birthday.

Hopefully, we will be back.

Beautiful house, very well equipped , fantastic helpful owner.

  • 5 of 5

The house is set on beautiful well kept grounds with amazing views. Everything you could possibly think of has been provided in the house down to the very finest details.

The owner and her assistant were always available for anything we needed or wanted and to offer helpful advice about places to go and things to see. We were caught in quite a large amount of snow and the driveway was gritted as if by angels in the morning, a large broom and pot of salt was also left for us incase we needed.

Thoroughly enjoyable weekend in a great house. Highly recommended.

Owner's Response: Thank you for a lovely review. We cannot do anything about the weather but we do try to lessen the effect on your holiday - the snow clearing being an example. Luckily we don't often have snow but we do have rain! The hanging rail in the wet-room is very useful for drying wet walking clothes and the children's playhouse is a great distraction when they cannot play outside. We look forward to seeing you again and please remember that if you book direct with us you get a return visitor discount. The rhododendron woods are beginning to bloom, along with the camellias so the garden is looking at its best now and in the coming months. Thank you again, Sonia [owner]
