There is a small wardrobe in the lounge area.. The oak stairs lead up to the mezzanine among the beams where you can relax and plan your days ahead with maps, books and chill out listening to your favourite music on a docking system. On leaving the building you step right into the heart of Sarlat, surrounded by Shops, Restaurants, Cafes, Markets, art galleries and the Cathederal of St Sacredos.

SARLAT : Sarlat dates back to around the 9th Century and some say before , but it was probably at the beginning of the 9th Century, with the founding of a Benedictine abbey that the real history of the city began. As time went on Sarlat evolved even coming under English rule for 10 years in 1360.! following repeated episodes of plague, famine & flooding and local uprising - Sarlat remained unchanged - indeed forgotten and slowly fell into dis-repair, totally unsuited to modern day living with narrow streets & lack of sanitation. But this handicap was to become an asset when the city was one of the first to benefit from the Malrux law of 4th August 1962. This law on protected areas quickly led to extensive renovation work. Today, this restoration work carries on an architectural heritage that remains the main treasure of Sarlat, indeed Sarlat is often used as a backdrop for Films such as Les Miserables and holds 'The Sarlat Film Festival' each November.

SURROUNDING AREA: Once outside Sarlat you are surrounded by some beautiful countryside and stunning views. Take a trip along the Dordogne river on a gabarres, or if you fancy a bit of exercise the canoes are worth a trip, bring a picnic and spend a day on the river. Explore the many caves and grottes in the area, and the cave paintings of Lascaux 2, not the original but worth a visit , for original paintings there is Font de Gaume which is in Les Eyzies and the caves of Rouffignac. See the sights from above by taking a balloon ride or a trip in a plane ! The rock formations of Les Eyzies are well worth a visit and the beautiful Chateaux/gardens of Les Milandes,( the home of Josephine Baker) Marqueyssac, Castelnaud,Fenlon and D'Eyrignac. Step back in time(100 years) and take a trip to Le Bournat, enjoy the fairground rides and workshops, visit the aquarium, or the new zoo reserve. Rocamadour about an hour away is well worth a visit, - a monkey park ,falconry, zoo, caves, fantastic views, and the pilgrim walking route, with beautiful churches. And for RELAXATION - the lakeside beach of Tamnies is ten minutes away from Sarlat.

Restaurants, cafes and markets are a speciality and In this region if you like Duck you will be in heaven along with Sarladais potatoes as well as other local produce.

The superb markets have an array of fresh mouth watering produce such as:

Truffles, foie gras, wild mushrooms like cepes, girolles and morels, also walnuts, chestnuts, strawberries, confits (meats preserved in fat) Cheeses, bread, sausages, wines and local liquors.

The Dordogne enjoys a more settled weather pattern than UK or Ireland, it does have rain, enriching the region with green fields and can be cold in the winter months. In the Spring and Autumn it has a varied temperature, starting off cool in the mornings and heating up as the day goes along…layers are the best clothing to bring. In the Summer June ,July and August the average temperature can be around 30 ‘C.. so shorts, T- shirts are a must, not forgetting sun hats, sun glasses and sun cream.

About Paula & Barry Grainger

We arrived from Ireland in 2005 and fell in love with the region and wanted to enrich our lives with a new culture, language and of course take in the local food and wine...

Paula & Barry Grainger purchased this apartment in 2009

Why Paula & Barry Grainger chose Sarlat-la-Canéda

We loved this apartment as soon as we saw it's high beamed roof and position looking over the other roofs of Sarlat. We could not wait to experience this property ourselves and we have spent a week or two enjoying the apartment, knowing that we were in the heart of history , a location for film sets and a superb market and ambiance.... We love the area as there are always suprises around the corner and Sarlat is a great base to explore other areas and villages. We love both the fact you can have a quiet relaxing visit wandering through villages and relaxing by or on the river/ lakes or enjoying the summer fetes... or delving into history and art and of course the food and wine and trips to vineyards.... something for every one.

What makes this apartment unique

So many benefits.... Location,Location,Location.... being in the heart of the medieval a perfect base for visiting the sites knowing that when you return to Le Grenier you are only seconds away from the shops, cafes, restaurants, galleries and tourist office to plan your next visits ...... Le Grenier itself is self contained and set in a 15 century building with original stone spiral staircase taking you to the apartment full of original oak beams and stonework, perfect to whip up some great meals from the fresh produce from the Wednesday and Saturday Markets which are right on your door step.... along with the restaurants and cafes, and in the Summer the street entertainment...

Guestbook comments from the owner

All good things must come to an end. We had decided to spend a few days away before the Christmas festivities set in, somewhere quiet but with a "Christmas feel", well we couldn't have asked for more with le Grenier and Sarlat. We arrived early evening and the magical Christmas feel to the town was wonderful. The apartment is very comfortable, well equipped with all that we needed and was lovely to return to after a day out sight seeing.. the welcome wine was very appreciated. If you are a photographer head out to the villages of Domme, Beynac, castelnaud early in the morning as the sun rising and mists from the river Dordogne create superb photos. The Christmas market if you are here at the time is well worth a visit for those extra gifts and the ice skating although we did not partake was fun to watch. All in all we have had a great stay and hope to return in the Summer months. Thank you Barry and Paula for all your help/advise especially the restaurants and not forgetting a wonderful welcome. Merry Christmas and best wishes for 2015.

In the middle of everything!

Very private, very central and full of character. We enjoyed a nice quiet week in the garret. The stairs kept us challenging our fitbits. You couldn't ask for more accommodating or friendly hosts! Thanks for everything Paula & Barry!

Just Perfect in Sarlat

  • 5 of 5

Both Paula and Barry were the perfect hosts. Friendly, helpful, nothing was a problem. The station pick-up and drop off was a great addition to their service. The apartment was great...metres to the centre of all that Sarlat has to offer, yet quite and cosy and idea to spend a raining day reading and relaxing. I love a loft and this one is exceptional. One of our best stays after being on the road for ten weeks. We will be back next year.

In the heart of a medieval town.

  • 5 of 5

First I must say that Paula and Barry were the perfect hosts. They met us at the train station so we could follow them in our car to a free parking lot. There are no cars permitted in the heart of the town but it is only a 10 minute walk to the apartment. They helped us with our baggage including going up the 74 step spiral staircase to the apartment. It is well worth the climb as the apartment is charming and full of character. The stairs are a good way to wear off some of the great food and wine you will find in the many restaurants at your doorstep. We would highly recommend this rental.

Great atmospheric location

  • 5 of 5

This is the most perfect location. - right in the centre of town. All the stairs are well worth it. The apartment is attractive, clean and comfortably furnished, also it is well equipped with all that is needed for a holiday. The owners, Paul and Barrie gave us an enthusiastic welcome and carried our heave hold case up the stairs for us ( I am 82). They were also a phone call away if we had a problem which we did not. It will be even better when the expected Wi-Fi is operational. We used the close at hand free service at the information office.

Perfect home, perfect hosts!

  • 5 of 5

I am a little late in writing this review as I stayed in May of 2013, but since I am headed back to stay in this charming little apartment again I had to share how wonderful it is! The apartment is as charming and full of character as the photos show. The location absolutely can't be beat. It is right in the middle of the old center of town, but quiet and private at the same time. The only problem I had with the apartment is that it was so comfortable that I ended up sleeping late every morning! Paula and Barry are amazing hosts and make the experience even better. Wonderful communication from the very first, and then personal attention when you arrive. They picked me up at the train station, purchased some groceries so that I had something to munch on after my long trip, left me a bottle of wine, and even helped me get to my next destination when I left. When I decided to head back to Sarlat this September there was no question on where to stay! Can't wait to get back!!!

I wanted to stay forever!

  • 5 of 5

I originally booked for 3 weeks but then extended to 5 ... and totally loved my stay in beautiful Le Grenier in the centre of lovely Sarlat. The apartment was just dreamy and had everything I needed. I cooked every day with the local treats I bought at the Wednesday and Saturday markets and enjoyed every pink sunset from that lovely window. Paula and Barry were excellent hosts, collecting me from the train station and carrying my bags up the stairs....even offering to do a little pre-arrival grocery shop! The kitchen was even stocked with a few essentials which was great! I totally enjoyed my stay and would recommend it to anyone. You'll love waking to the church bells and chit chatter of your feathery roof top friends. I'll definitely be back. Thanks Paula and Barry
