About Shirley or Boris King

We couldn't live without family & friends, being close to the ocean and great food!!

Here are some of our favorite things to do:

*Take an early morning walk along Waterfront Park.

*Hike the North Shore trails (including Lynne Canyon and the Salmon Hatchery).

*Stroll through Lower Lonsdale neighbourhood, stop for coffee and people watch.

*Shop at the local market “Lonsdale Cay Market”.

*Watch a movie at the neighbourhood Cinema.

*Grocery shop at the local IGA or Fresh Market.

*Walk with friends through the local marina.

*Enjoy the activities at John Braithwaite Community Center

*Visit North Shore ski resorts Grouse Mountain, Seymour and Cypress.

Our life has been one big adventure and it keeps getting better. If you want to get to know us better - you can read about our travels. In our first book we describe our first sailing experience - crossing the Pacific Ocean to Australia with our 8-month old baby. It's called 'The Unsinkable Spirit - In Search of Love, Adventure and Riches!'

Shirley or Boris King purchased this apartment in 1993

Why Shirley or Boris King chose Lower Lonsdale

Location, location, location!!!

Lower Lonsdale is a historic waterfront neighbourhood – a vibrant, busy corridor of restaurants, shops, salons and specialty stores. It’s a bustling business corridor of banks and professional services. It has everything – and all within walking distance!

One block away on the waterfront is Lonsdale Quay Market (fresh food vendors, unique retail shops, artisans, restaurants), the bus loop and the Seabus terminal. (The Seabus is a high-speed catamaran that zips across Burrard Inlet to downtown Vancouver in a seven-minute trip.)

We’ve always been drawn to the ocean and anything marine-related so Lower Lonsdale the perfect place for us! You’ll love it too.

What makes this apartment unique

Not only is it convenient – the apartment is great. We love it. It’s comfortable. It’s fun. It’s oozing with charm as it's in a heritage building. It’s a character apartment with high ceilings, hardwood floors and bay windows. It's freshly painted and squeaky clean. The furniture is new. There is a big flat screen TV and fast WIFI – providing all the comforts of home!!!

A disappointing rental

  • 3 of 5

Although the location of this apartment was excellent (easy access to the Lonsdale Quay Market and Seabus, grocery stores, restaurants, etc.), the accommodations themselves left something to be desired. The apartment building is old and somewhat seedy. The coin-operated laundry is down a narrow hallway three long flights down from the second-floor apartment, and the trash room is yet another flight down. When we arrived, that room was crammed with unemptied trash bags plus a freezer filled to the brim with additional bags of trash. It was no different when we left nine days later. I was surprised not to see rats running around.

The apartment itself was very clean and adequately furnished, but the kitchen lacked basic amenities. The sink didn't have a stopper, yet there was no dish pan in which to do dishes. There was only one frying pan (without a lid) that had seen better days, and the kitchen lacked such basic kitchen tools as a collander, mixing spoons, chopping knives, etc., and offered only salt as a stocked spice. The screw on the bathroom door hook was hanging loose, rendering the hook unfunctional, and the spout on the soap dispenser kept falling off.

The worst aspect of the apartment was the lack of air circulation. Three of the days we were there boasted 80-degree temperatures, which were unbearable in an apartment with southern exposure that had all but two windows (in the living room) painted shut and only one ceiling fan in the bedroom. We ran that fan all night but had to stand on the bed to turn off the light because the pull was too short to reach. We ended up buying a floor fan that we moved from room to room; we left it behind for the benefit of future renters.

Finally, this apartment is not the best choice for someone traveling by car. The statement that paid parking is available across the street is misleading. Yes, there is paid parking, but you have to clear out by 11:59 p.m. and hope to find free parking on the street, which needs to be vacated the next morning. My husband had to negotiate two long flights of stairs several times most days to see if there was somewhere to move the car for the night. He then had to go down in the morning and move the car again, either to the paid-parking lot (if there was a space) for the day or to a free parking place with a time limit of half an hour, an hour, or (if he was lucky) two hours.

All in all, this rental was a huge disappointment.

Owner's Response: Thank you being our guest. We’re delighted that you stayed with us. And yes the location is amazing!! Our heritage building, built in 1911, is not like today’s modern buildings. We strive to preserve as much charm as possible and in effort to do so we are determined to retain the beautiful 9 ft. high windows and extra tall kitchen cupboards. We know it’s a personal preference and not appreciated by everyone. From the feedback we receive, 9 out of 10 guests love it. Our manager, being very hospitable by nature, loves to accommodate our guests (if she knows what they need) to ensure their time with us is as enjoyable as possible. Safe travels and warmest regards.

Great value and location.

  • 4 of 5

Light and spacious in a great location. Helpful and responsive hosts and building manager. If you're a light sleeper or stairs are a problem, just be aware there can be a bit of street noise and there are stairs to the apartment on the first floor. Would definitely stay here again.

Central Location

  • 3 of 5

Great photos which accurately reflect this mature apartment and its status. We found everything as described and it was clean and newly painted. The location is superb, being close to all public transport, The Quay, restaurants and food shops. This convenient access does result in a noisier setting which may not suit a light sleeper.

The manager, Lisbeth, was very friendly and helpful.

Great location getaway

  • 5 of 5

We had a fabulous stay with all the conveniences of home. The location was great - close to all kinds of transportation, Farmers market (opened all week), grocery stores, drug stores, banks and restaurants etc...

Must be healthy enough to climb stairs.

Shirley and Boris were great hosts - very helpful at all times. We would definitely consider going back to them on our next trip to Vancouver. Again, thank you - Millie and Paul
