About Pat and Tod O'Connell

Pat and I moved to Essex MT in 2003. We had both worked in Glacier Park for 4 years in the late 60's and later went to the U of MT in Missoula. We both love the Glacier Park area and moved back here from St. Paul after the kids left the house. They found us shortly thereafter and come out frequently to visit. Pat and I love the mountains and the 4 seasons and enjoy going into Glacier hiking and animal watching.

Pat and Tod O'Connell purchased this house in 2010

Why Pat and Tod O'Connell chose Glacier Park

The Essex Mountain House came up for sale in 2010. It was formerly owned by the Great Northern Railroad and used by the roadmaster years ago. It was moved to this site, I'm told, 30 to 40 years ago. We liked the look, layout and history of the place and bought it when it came up for sale. It was in need of TLC so we totally updated the kitchen and bathrooms and did a lot of finish work while retaining the a lot of the old character. We're both really happy with how it turned out.

What makes this house unique

Totally updated large kitchen, laundry and a full bath upstairs and downstairs make this 2 story house great for families and groups. A big yard on a double lot allows plenty of room for bbq's and relaxing on the property. Essex is located half way between East and West Glacier and across the highway from the Walton entrance to Glacier. We're near the Amtrack train platform so there's great train viewing also.

Terrific Place to Stay!

  • 5 of 5

Thanks to the Sheep Fire, we had to wait 2 days before we could get in to Essex and the Mountain House. It was well worth the wait. The house was clean, well-maintained and well-stocked. It served as the perfect home base for our daily excursions into Glacier NP. And on the day the region received some much-needed rain, it gave us a comfortable retreat for resting our hike-weary feet. The O'Connells went the extra mile to make us feel welcome and comfortable. Leading up to our stay, they provided regular updates on the fire so that we could make other arrangements for the first 2 days of our trip--all during a time when they had to pack up and evacuate Essex. We're very thankful the town and its residents stayed out of harm's way, and we would highly recommend the Essex Mountain House to anyone planning a trip to NW Montana.

Owner's Response: Thank you both for your kind comments and your patience in waiting to get into the Essex Mountain House. Fortunately, the winds didn't do as predicted and there was no harm to the Essex area. Pat and I are happy you were able to see a lot of Glacier Park and take a lot of hikes. I hope you get a chance to come back with some of the family. Thanks again. Tod and Pat

BEST vacation ever in the mountains

  • 5 of 5

Our group of 6 stayed at the Essex Mountain House for 7 nights and I am not sure we could have picked a better location or a nicer home. Upon arrival, Pat showed us around and Tod met up with us after a few minutes. We were floored at how beautiful and clean the house was. The inside was immaculate and exactly what you picture when you think of renting a home in the mountains. We brought most of our own items but it was stocked with everything we could possibly need for our week long stay. The bedrooms are spacious, the kitchen is accommodating for a group, bathrooms, amazing. The house had a ton of info on the area and if we had any other questions we asked Tod and Pat and they happily pointed us in the right direction. The yard was very nice and large as well, set right in front of the train tracks, which didn't bother us at all even though it was used frequently. There as a nice BBQ, picnic table and fire pit even though we didn't get to use it due to the Fire warnings.

Our group departed every morning around 4:30 am to get a head start on the crowds for hiking. It's not a bad drive to the Two Medicine area but is a bit of a trek up to Many Glacier, which is where we spent decent time. However, the drive is nice. Due to the wildfires, GTSR was impassable from St Mary's to Logan Pass. This made us VERY thankful we picked Essex as the central location as we could easily access the East or West side of the park. We were originally going to stay in Babb and the drive to get to West Glacier would have been a LONG one having to go around the entire park. Though we were gone for the majority of the days, it was incredibly nice to come home and relax at the house. The weather was perfect so we were able to enjoy the outside, and Malley, Tod and Pat's adorable dog, even came to hang out with us a couple times, which we loved.

As if Tod and Pat needed to offer any more hospitality than they did, Pat brought over delicious chocolate chip cookies one evening. Icing on the cake!

Its my hope that eventually we can get back out to the Glacier area and stay at this house again. Thank you Tod and Pat for everything. Our group is still and will continue to talk about how great our trip was, all thanks to you guys!

Owner's Response: Alicia, Thank you very very much for taking the time to write a much appreciated review. Pat and I are also impressed with your love of Glacier Park and the trails and other opportunities and how you and your guests really took advantage of what the Park had to offer. I hope you get a chance to come out again and, if so, don't forget returning guests get a discount. Have a great rest of the summer. Tod and Pat

Wonderful vacation spot!

  • 5 of 5

What a great vacation spot and a lovely home. The house was perfect for three 'old' friends to have a reunion. Kitchen was well stocked; we each had our own large and comfortable bedroom; and the living room was a excellent place to sit and relax, if we weren't outside at the fire pit in the backyard. After the first dozen trains went by, we didn't notice them much after that. Lots to see and do in the area and well situated between the east and west sides of Glacier National Park. Hosts were readily available to answer questions and very friendly, along with their very happy Golden Retriever, Mallie. Highly recommend this house.

Owner's Response: Pat and I want to thank each of you for the great comments. And Malley thanks you for her first review. We really like it when guests use and appreciate the house and yard and take the time to write a review. It was a lot of work to get this house and yard fixed up but it's like a Christmas present when people appreciate and make use of it as you did. I hope you can come back someday. Tod and Pat

Fantastic spot!

  • 5 of 5

This place was perfect. A bunch of us descended upon Essex to celebrate our 40th birthdays. A few of us stayed a this cottage while the rest stayed at the Hotel. The cottage was very spacious yet cozy and has an excellent FULLY stocked kitchen. The ski trails are a few minutes walk and the setting is very tranquil. Pat and Tod were available to answer questions and are very friendly folks.
