About Pat and Tod O'Connell

Pat and I moved to Essex MT in 2003. We had both worked in Glacier Park for 4 years in the late 60's and later went to the U of MT in Missoula. We both love the Glacier Park area and moved back here from St. Paul after the kids left the house. They found us shortly thereafter and come out frequently to visit. Pat and I love the mountains and the 4 seasons and enjoy going into Glacier hiking and animal watching.

Tod O'Connell

Pat and Tod O'Connell purchased this house in 2010

Why Pat and Tod O'Connell chose Glacier Park

The Essex Mountain House came up for sale in 2010. It was formerly owned by the Great Northern Railroad and used by the roadmaster years ago. It was moved to this site, I'm told, 30 to 40 years ago. We liked the look, layout and history of the place and bought it when it came up for sale. It was in need of TLC so we totally updated the kitchen and bathrooms and did a lot of finish work while retaining the a lot of the old character. We're both really happy with how it turned out.

What makes this house unique

Totally updated large kitchen, laundry and a full bath upstairs and downstairs make this 2 story house great for families and groups. A big yard on a double lot allows plenty of room for bbq's and relaxing on the property. Essex is located half way between East and West Glacier and across the highway from the Walton entrance to Glacier. We're near the Amtrack train platform so there's great train viewing also.

Comfy location for Glacier Park touring

  • 5 of 5

This comfy, spacious, well equipped home was a perfect headquarters for touring Glacier Park! We brought our new Canadian family (our daughter's brand new in-laws and aunt/uncle) here to show them Glacier Park after our daughter's wedding. It has the perfect location on the south side of the park to tour the east and west sides and do the Going to the Sun Road. We have cross-country skied at Izaak Walton before but were looking for a place where we could be together. This home has been beautifully restored and modernized and has a great yard with a fire pit in the back to enjoy star gazing and marsh mellow roasting. Couldn't have been happier!

Our mini vaca

  • 5 of 5

This was a charming and cozy home and was just right for our family mini vacation. Our host was friendly and helpful with Glacier Park info. The trains were surprisingly enjoyable and our granddaughter loved waving at the passengers on the Amtrak. We stay at this home again. So book it and enjoy.

Living in History

  • 5 of 5

WOW!! What an experience! Once you step into the Essex Mountain House one can feel the love and labor that Todd gave this historical structure. The house was very clean and perfect for 4 seniors from South Georgia. The upstairs bedroom had a big comfortable bed and with open windows, you could hear and feel the cool wind rustling thru the trees. We only had two nights here but it restored our strength and renewed our love of the "good old days". Can't wait to return!!Todd was great to work with and wasn't upset with our 10PM arrival!! Many thanks Todd!!

Terrific Place to Stay!

  • 5 of 5

Thanks to the Sheep Fire, we had to wait 2 days before we could get in to Essex and the Mountain House. It was well worth the wait. The house was clean, well-maintained and well-stocked. It served as the perfect home base for our daily excursions into Glacier NP. And on the day the region received some much-needed rain, it gave us a comfortable retreat for resting our hike-weary feet. The O'Connells went the extra mile to make us feel welcome and comfortable. Leading up to our stay, they provided regular updates on the fire so that we could make other arrangements for the first 2 days of our trip--all during a time when they had to pack up and evacuate Essex. We're very thankful the town and its residents stayed out of harm's way, and we would highly recommend the Essex Mountain House to anyone planning a trip to NW Montana.

Owner's Response: Thank you both for your kind comments and your patience in waiting to get into the Essex Mountain House. Fortunately, the winds didn't do as predicted and there was no harm to the Essex area. Pat and I are happy you were able to see a lot of Glacier Park and take a lot of hikes. I hope you get a chance to come back with some of the family. Thanks again. Tod and Pat
