About Nick & Gemma Baker
Nick and I currently live in North Devon, England. I am a nurse and work in the local hospital and Nick is a carpenter/furniture maker. We moved here from Cantabria 5 years ago where we lived, in our van on site, while we renovated the Casa Blanca!
Nick & Gemma Baker purchased this Apartment in 2004
Why Nick & Gemma Baker chose Liérganes
Nick and I bought this house in 2004 - We were driving up this amazing valley when we saw it derelict. Nick slammed the brakes on and we stopped and looked around. We were smitten! It was Nick's dream to renovate an old property and we took on this 'small' project that was only meant to take a year. 9 years on, we finally finished it and we love it just as much as when we first set eyes on it.
What makes this Apartment unique
This house is situated on the side of one of the most beautiful valleys. The views are phenomenal and there is the added bonus of the gorgeous river below - which is just wonderful for swimming in on a hot summer's day. The road going further up the valley is breathtaking, and the village of Lierganes below is friendly, has great restaurants and some great little shops - what more could you want?!
Nice property, pictures bit misleading
Really nice place. Good location. A few downside where the road directly outside the house. The description makes it sound like the river is close. Probably a 20 min walk at least. including one section up a dangerous road. The Wifi far from being temperamental did not work at all during our stay. This was made worse by the fact there was no phone signal at all
Nice property but not ideal at this time of year
Mirones was a lovely village - we particularly enjoyed the river walk over the "roman" bridge. Lierganes was a pleasant town, although somewhat quiet at this time of the year, and a number of restaurants were closed. Trips to Santander and the prehistoric cave museum were interesting (unfortunately the caves in the area were shut). Walks in the area were very muddy and slippery - the marked walk on the other side of the river was impassable.
The property was functional, but we were disappointed to see that the infestation of bugs in the entrance and on the window ledge in the kitchen area had not been cleared away before our arrival.
It was very cold and wet when we arrived, and we were surprised that the heating was coin-metered, and logs were not supplied for the log burner - prior knowledge of this would have been useful.
Gorgeously renovated house in a peaceful environment with lovely views.
We spent beautiful stay in Cantabria with our children! We can recommend it to all travellers who love nature, history and delicious food.
Beautiful apartment in lovely location
This is a very sweet apartment and we were very happy to stay here. We stayed for 5 days and 4 nights and really made the most of exploring the surrounding areas. The apartment was very clean, comfortable and nicely appointed. It has great character and charm. The communication before our trip was excellent. The views of the surrounding countryside are gorgeous. We enjoyed listening to the river and the cows as we drank coffee on the deck in the mornings. Internet is a bit spotty but it was nice to disconnect for a while. There is so much to do in this area. Nick and Gemma's recommendations about what to do and see are perfect! We visited the caves of Monte Castillo which were amazing. We also spent some time in Santillana del Mar, Santander, Suances, Comillas and San Vicente de la Barquera. Our absolute favorite spot was Los Picos de Europa. It is best to give yourself plenty of time if you plan to visit because there is so much to do and see in this area. This is a gorgeous part of Spain and we enjoyed our time here and the property very much! Thank you!
Amazing tranquillity nestled in the Spanish Hills.
Absolutely beautiful rustic place to stay for some peaceful relaxation. The building is well thought out to accommodate all your needs and lovingly restored to ensure your stay is authentically Spanish. The view is spectacular to wake up to everyday whether it's rainy or sunny. The town of Lierganes is very quaint and laid-back which may not suit some, but if you want a place to match your sleepy relation then this is it! A good range of restaurants and excellent supermarkets to make sure you can stock up for plenty of BBQ's. There is plenty to do and see locally or a short drive away. The drive along the coast and through the mountains is particularly picturesque, we would highly recommend visiting The Capricho De Gaudi and the little town of Santillana del Mar. Can't wait to go again!
Appartement idéalement situé
Appartement très bien rénové et décoré. Le balcon est très agréable et la vue y est magnifique.
The Casa Blanca is situated 3 miles up the River Miera from the historical spa town of Lierganes. Famous for the fabled 'Hombre de Pez' (fish man); its role in the Spanish Armada, and its beautiful buildings, Lierganes is a bustling lively town all year round. Home to good cheap restaurants, great bars and many small shops it's a perfect place to be situated. If you want to travel further afield there is a direct train line to Santander, a beautiful city with great seafood and fantastic beaches.
Straight from the door are fantastic walks, stunning scenery and the river Miera, perfect for swimming and exploring. It is an ideal spot for cycling and great terrain for mountain biking.
Jump in the car, and within half an hour there is an endless possibility of things to do. For families, there are beautiful beaches, an enormous wildlife park, caves to visit, horse riding amongst many other attractions. Most, if not all, restaurants welcome children, making it a great destination for families.
For the more adventurous there is caving, climbing, white water rafting, surfing and even skiing!
