About Nick & Gemma Baker

Nick and I currently live in North Devon, England. I am a nurse and work in the local hospital and Nick is a carpenter/furniture maker. We moved here from Cantabria 5 years ago where we lived, in our van on site, while we renovated the Casa Blanca!

Nick & Gemma Baker purchased this apartment in 2004

Why Nick & Gemma Baker chose Liérganes

Nick and I bought this house in 2004 - We were driving up this amazing valley when we saw it derelict. Nick slammed the brakes on and we stopped and looked around. We were smitten! It was Nick's dream to renovate an old property and we took on this 'small' project that was only meant to take a year. 9 years on, we finally finished it and we love it just as much as when we first set eyes on it.

What makes this apartment unique

This house is situated on the side of one of the most beautiful valleys. The views are phenomenal and there is the added bonus of the gorgeous river below - which is just wonderful for swimming in on a hot summer's day. The road going further up the valley is breathtaking, and the village of Lierganes below is friendly, has great restaurants and some great little shops - what more could you want?!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Really enjoyed our brief stay - loved the Attic apartment, really light and airy! We hope to return to explore more of the area

Good location and facilities

  • 4 of 5

Used the apartment as a base for exploring the Green Coast of Northern Spain. Despite my wife's back problems which arose just before we arrived, we really enjoyed our stay.

Nearby Lierganes has plenty of facilities to fulfil needs, including a very helpful Doctor's Surgery!

We visited the spectacular mountain passes just 15km up the road from the flat, as well as Potes in the Picos Mountains, and some local beaches (Galziano in particular was great).

The top flat was worth the climb each day as the view from the balcony was great, and good for supping an evening glass of beer or wine according to the heat of the day. Easy to see Vultures and even an eagle soaring overhead, as well as small garden birds flitting back and forth, with a nightly owl calling too while we could star gaze without the usual UK light pollution.

The bed was comfortable and the provision of washing machine and tumble dryer in the basement was helpful after so many hot days.

The main bug-bear was the heat in the flat from being on the top floor.... opening the Velux roof windows was some help but that would then let various bugs in once the lights were on.... Overall still well worth while staying here.

Would Have Been a Perfect Stay if We'd Arrived to a Clean Place

  • 3 of 5

While it is obvious the owners have taken great pains to restore and re-make a beautiful farmhouse, some obvious attention to detail is lacking. Keeping in mind that this farmhouse is in the countryside and in a rustic setting, we were still disgusted to find dead bugs, spiders and mice droppings throughout the apartment (even on the beds, around and on the sofas). Our friend, had the choice of sleeping on stained/dirty futon or the small "cabin bed" area which had spiders and dead bugs around it. The Internet barely worked, so we could not get in touch with the owners or their helpers in time enough to make it worth bothering them. Although these apartments are well priced for visiting the area, having to clean an apartment upon arrival after travel is less than ideal. Putting screens on the windows to keep out the bugs and making sure the apartment is cleaned and checked right before guests arrive (as it turned out, running into the cleaning person right before departing, our apartment was vacant a while before we came) seem like obvious and simple things the owners could do to ensure their guests have an enjoyable stay.

It is a real shame to give a review like this when the area and the house are beautiful and well worth a visit.

Owner's Response: I feel really sad and disappointed to read this review. We received your email highlighting your concerns with the cleanliness on your arrival and replied immediately. Not having any answer, we sent our housekeeper over who spoke with a gentleman who informed us that you were happy with the apartment and said it was nothing out of the ordinary for a apartment that hadn't been used for a while. Our cleaners had been in prior to your arrival, but in the week before. They have always been fabulous, and we have never had anything but praise for the cleanliness of the house. In future we will ensure somebody goes in and cleans the day prior to the guests arrival. It is very rural - we are situated in the middle of one of the most beautiful valleys you'll ever see, and the Internet connection is hit and miss, but is the best we can get. We are sad you didn't feel you could follow this up with ourselves and needed to leave this review of our home.

Relaxing and comfortable with an amazing view

  • 5 of 5

This is a beautiful apartment, comfortable and homely with much more space than expected. The views are amazing and the area could easily fill many days of exploration not to mention the diversion of the great food and drink options available. Thoroughly recommend!

The view that adds 10 years to your life.

  • 5 of 5

Stayed 7 nights and enjoyed every one. After visiting nearby towns...not so nearby but we had a car and explored a lot we couldn't wait to get back and relax with the awesome view. We stayed at the Besaya on the main floor. Very clean and had all the amenities. We had a bbq one night and enjoyed our bottle of tempranillo thinking we were in heaven. The owner provided us with perfect instructions for the keys problems. The area is so peaceful and relaxing that we hated leaving on our journey. I could go on forever but in brief, this is the view that adds 10 years to your life!!!!!

Cosy ,relaxing and full of character.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here with our teenage daughters in July 2010. We all loved the layout of the apartment and felt really comfortable as it is furnished well and has all the amenities one needs.

We had benefited from a stay in the ground floor apartment earlier and enjoyed the different characters of each. We were able to visit the coast within half an hour of the apartment and the beaches are so unspoilt and beautiful.Equally, the drives and walks in the mountains were really enjoyable and relaxing.Lierganes is a charming spa town with a beautiful old centre.

There is so much to see in this area and we still didn't have time to explore the caves and the nearby town of Santander...we hope to make a return visit and definitely recommend it to others!

Quiet, comfortable and relaxing appartment

  • 5 of 5

We (me, my wife and two teenage daughters) just spent a very relaxing week staying in the ground floor appartment. Nick and Gemma have worked very hard to convert the property and have done a really good job. The appartment we stayed in had great views out over the valley and you could hear the river gently running in the background.

The appartment was well equipped and comfortable for the four of us with some good storage space downstairs for bikes and surfboards.

The location is ideal with Lieganes (a lovely small town) 5 minutes drive (.. or 20 minutes bike ride) away. We cycled up the valley which is spectacular, getting up to San Roque and then beyond up to a pass at 1300m. Lots of lycra cladded cyclists heading for the hills would go past in the morning whizzing back down on the return in the evening.

Looks like some great walking all around the valley although we didn't have time to do any.

Appartment is only 20-25 mins from the Somo beaches which were excellent with some good surf and lovely sand .. other beaches to the West of Santander were easily accessed but took a little longer to get to (45 mins).

The Casa Blanca is situated 3 miles up the River Miera from the historical spa town of Lierganes. Famous for the fabled 'Hombre de Pez' (fish man); its role in the Spanish Armada, and its beautiful buildings, Lierganes is a bustling lively town all year round. Home to good cheap restaurants, great bars and many small shops it's a perfect place to be situated. If you want to travel further afield there is a direct train line to Santander, a beautiful city with great seafood and fantastic beaches.

Straight from the door are fantastic walks, stunning scenery and the river Miera, perfect for swimming and exploring. It is an ideal spot for cycling and great terrain for mountain biking.

Jump in the car, and within half an hour there is an endless possibility of things to do. For families, there are beautiful beaches, an enormous wildlife park, caves to visit, horse riding amongst many other attractions. Most, if not all, restaurants welcome children, making it a great destination for families.

For the more adventurous there is caving, climbing, white water rafting, surfing and even skiing!

Other Activities: We can offer you English or Spanish courses during your stay. Please ask for more details.
