About David and Laurie Abbott
Our family of 6 loves unplugging, getting away from our busy lives and connecting with nature! We enjoy renting a pontoon boat, tubing on Nantahala Lake and jumping off a rope swing on Rabbit Island. Our favorite thing is sitting around the campfire roasting marshmallows and eating Dads Dutch oven peach cobbler. As a parent it's great that there is no cell service.
David and Laurie Abbott purchased this Cottage in 2013
Why David and Laurie Abbott chose Topton
This property has been in my family for nearly 200 years. We have Native American roots and named the cabin after my mother who we affectionately call Running Squirrel, Our land boasts wild turkey, deer, rabbits, and of course squirrels!
What makes this Cottage unique
You feel secluded surrounded by 5 acres of trees tucked between two mountain ridges. We enjoy picking blackberries and making pies and cobblers.
Absolutely no smoking on the property.

This cabin is AMAZING. It is so precious and perfect if you’re looking to get offline for a couple of days. The owners are fantastic and easy to reach. Even when I made a couple of mistakes when checking in they were helpful and got back to me as soon as they possibly could. We so loved this cabin and would love to come back sometime.
We are glad you enjoyed your time away. We would love to have you back. Congratulations on your new adventure, we feel an honor to be apart of it.
Can't wait to visit again!
We drove in on a Friday afternoon and got to see all of the beautiful Fall colors of the trees from Nashville to Chattanooga and then into the Nantahala Forest. By Sunday morning we'd seen most of the leaves fall, so it was perfect timing! Finding the property was easy. I have a FWD Toyota Corolla and made it up the driveway with ease.
The property itself is perfect. The owners have done a wonderful job with upkeep in and outside of the cabin. The amenities are too many to number! You just can't get charm like this elsewhere. Perfect mountain view, extra spacious outdoor patio/deck, tree swing(s), trails right on the property, fire pit with plenty seating, clean property with no trash, debris or litter in sight.
This was my first time to North Carolina and it wouldn't have been as perfect without staying in this cabin. Large living room with mountain views, eat-in kitchen near the bay window, plenty of space with the open floor plan, loft upstairs overlooking the living room and kitchen. It felt like home away from home.
Every detail in the cabin was thought about. Stocked pantries with canned goods, spices, pots, pans, you name it! All the amenities you could ask for (and even ones you wouldn't think about)! My personal favorite was the extra pair of comfy house slippers in the bedroom closet. My feet are unreasonably cold all the time and these suckers saved me! So shout out to David and Laurie for that!
No complaints, only praises. I can't wait to visit again. 10/10 recommend this place if you are looking for the perfect cabin.
**There is no cell service here which is why I picked it, so you may want to do what I did (and what others have suggested) and print out directions/maps to some of the things you'd like to do while here. Otherwise, cell service is about 20 minutes away in town. The owners have also graciously created a binder with all sorts of things to do around the property and Nantahala Forest if you want to wing it!**
We are so pleased that you enjoyed your trip and that you love our place as much as we do. The leaves are beautiful in the fall and the drive through Tennessee something to be remembered. We are glad the slippers came in handy. We can’t wait to have you back!!
This cabin experience was very quaint and cozy. This is such a beautiful location especially in October.
We are so glad you enjoyed your time at our place. The leaves are particularly beautiful this time of year. We hope to see you again soon.
If you’re looking for a quiet, secluded, off the main road kind of place, then this is for you. This little place was super clean, comfortable and perfect for the two of us. Be advised that it is a bit of a drive to town with plenty of twisting roads, but the ride is beautiful this time of year .
We had a nice enjoyable stay at Running Squirrel Ridge. Enjoyed the fire pit and the remote peace and quiet. Had a nice day visiting Andrews and Murphy as well. The cabin was clean and had everything that we needed.
We loved the no cell service and no one around peace and quiet doesn't come around often but we got it here and we loved the location and we hope to make it an annual trip thank you so much
We are so glad you enjoyed the solitude. We hope to have you back soon.
Our cottage is located in the heart of the Smokey Mountains, one mile from Lake Nantahala, one of the most pristine lakes in North Carolina. We've got some DVD’s in case it rains. The home is stocked with everything you'd have at your own kitchen plus a propane grill on the deck. The quaint little towns of Andrews and Murphy are just a short drive away - if you don’t want to cook your own meals. You could take a trip into Murphy and enjoy the brand-new Harrah's Cherokee Valley River Casino, take a ride on the Great Smokey Mountain Railroad, go whitewater rafting, zip lining, hiking, or horseback riding in the Nantahala Gorge or just kickback and enjoy the beautiful view of the mountains while sitting by a crackling fire.
Lake Nantahala is surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains with a surface area of 1,605 acres at 3,012 feet mean sea level and over 20 miles of shoreline. You will find an abundance of trout, bass, catfish, walleye, crappie and sunfish. There is also a population of kokanee salmon in the lake. According to National Forest rules, only 5% of the surrounding lake land may be developed which makes Lake Nantahala a cozy and private place to live for those looking for a true mountain lake retreat.
Visitors enjoy boating, fishing, swimming and camping on Lake Nantahala. The lake has two public boat landings. Lakes End Diner and Marina to the north offer the only marina, boat rental, restaurant and fuel service on the lake. Fishing and sporting supplies are also available there.
Thousands of visitors per year pilgrim to the region for whitewater rafting which is a booming industry on the Nantahala River. Kayaking, canoeing, and paddling on the river and in Nantahala Gorge are other popular attractions and complement water activities on Lake Nantahala. The Nantahala National Forest, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Cherokee National Forest, and Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest offer dynamic wildlife opportunities. There are miles and miles of hiking trails in the surrounding Appalachian forests and mountains. The Appalachian Trail passes just a few miles to the east of Lake Nantahala and can be joined by other hiking trails.
Snowboarding and skiing can be found at the Cataloochee Ski Area in nearby Maggie Valley. Adjacent to the Great Smoky Mountains you will find the home and lands of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians. Drama, Cherokee arts, dance, storytelling, a museum, and Cherokee village are just a few of the possibilities for immersing yourself in the culture of one of the nation's oldest group of inhabitants.
