Overview

About the property

Small group of up to 10 or larger group of up to 16 for a private, quiet retreat

This cozy, rustic home sleeping up to 10 people is focused on sustainability and creativity (art inside and out) in the middle of 20 acres of a beautiful old forest. Quiet, private and rustic setting with the owner on site for your convenience. No sirens or traffic noise, no people noise. Just the music of peepers, birds and comfortable breezes. 5 minutes from Lake Michigan.

There's a fire pit and grill near the cabin deck, a campfire nearby just to remind you that you're in the country and a hammock for watching the universe of stars at night. My English Mastiff, woman's best friend, is also here to greet you when you want. Spud, the cat, loves people, too.

Larger groups:

In addition to the main cabin, the little cabin nearby sleeps 2 more. The Beech barn sleeps 4 more on the screened porch and has a large kitchen/living area and bathroom. Also close by.

Bonus: you can enjoy the best homemade Michigan fruit pies you've ever tasted waiting for you when you arrive.

Catlin, a terrific masseuse, will come and pamper you if you like, too.

Located 8 minutes from Saugatuck, 12 minutes from South Haven and 5 minutes from Lake Michigan.

About Karen Duffin

I've had various careers over many years in the Midwest but this place has been in my heart since the 60's. I love the energy of this forest. I also love sharing it with others so they can also experience the insights that this peaceful forest brings. People claim my fruit pies are the best they've ever tasted. I can bake one for you, if you like.

Karen Duffin purchased this cabin in 1994

Why Karen Duffin chose Fennville

People love this property for the quiet, peaceful privacy, the good energy of the land and the nearby beaches just minutes from Lake Michigan. There's a number of trails through the woods, herbs in the garden, a pond for finding all kinds of frogs, salamanders and other fascinating creatures. A variety of trees (beeches are my favorite) grace the rolling terrain, feed the wildlife, and cool and shelter the facilities. Historically, Native Americans made their home here. You can experience the same feeling of spiritual renewal with nature here.

What makes this cabin unique

There are walking trails, benches to meditate, a large pond, herb and flower gardens, a large campfire setting nearby, art work and more. This is not like a motel/hotel or anything like most rentals. It's not only a rustic extension of a large, tiny home with space for larger groups, it's the connection with this land that my guests all talk about. I love that. It's what we all need to be happy.

A little Heaven on Earth!

  • 5 of 5

This was our first family trip with just our kids and grandkids. The Red Spirit was the perfect place to have it. It is the most peaceful place we've been ever, but so much fun. Our grandkids loved being able to walk the trails and sitting around the fire pit at night. The accommodations were more than enough for our group of 15 and we had everything we needed to make this home feel like home. Karen and Zeppy made us feel so welcome. We went to Saugatuck to visit the beach, which was the highlite of our trip, along with the fabulous firework show. Bring an avid gardener myself, I loved the beautiful flower garden and just the whole ambiance at Red Spirit. This may have been our first trip there but it definitely will not be the last. Thank you Karen for being a blessing to our family. Looking forward to next year!

Writer's Retreat in the Woods

  • 5 of 5

A few friends and I rented out the Red Spirit for a relaxing weekend of writing and it was wonderful. In fact, much progress was made by all and new friendships were forged. The garden is beautiful--full of poppies, irises and my personal favorite, peonies. There was ample room in the cabin and we had everything we needed to feel at home away from home. Karen is a gem and her dog, Zeppy, is a sweetheart. If you're looking for a quaint and relaxing place surrounded by nature, I would recommend The Red Spirit. Hoping to go back next year!

Family Reunion

  • 5 of 5

We had such a great time here. This place is clean, well maintained and in a lovely setting! And, Karen is interested in everyone having everything they need, as well as a good time at her wonderful get-away. While we were all doing different adventures during the day -running, biking, going to the beach or shopping in Saugatuck, eating out in Fenneville, Douglass or Saugatuck, we all came back together at the end of the day and Karen brought us games she thought our diverse age group would enjoy playing. That evening time was the best part of our day! THANK YOU KAREN!

THE 4TH & FAMILY...

  • 5 of 5

Karen's hospitality was warm & welcoming, the accommodations were most comfortable, and our time at the retreat was just as expected from reading previous reviews... perfect! My husband & I were there over the July 4th weekend with grown sons & significant others, and I just may plan a trip back this fall with my lifelong girlfriends. It's the perfect proximity to Lake Michigan & Saugatuck with the peacefulness we love for the mornings... especially in the screened porch with coffee:)

Family Fun Vacation

  • 5 of 5

My family travels annually to Saugatuck for relaxation and a time to have fun together. This year we did something different, and stayed outside the village limits at The Red Spirit Retreat. It was quiet and peaceful. The owner was gracious and welcoming upon arrival. Everything we needed was there. She even made us a warm and delicious cherry pie!! It was definitely the break we all needed before heading back to city life.

The Perfect Place to Get Away and Relax

  • 5 of 5

Myself and three of my friends chose this cabin for a Memorial Day weekend girls trip and were so happy with everything! The cabin was clean and spacious and the property is beautiful. It's incredibly quiet and peaceful where the cabin is in the woods, but it's also only a 10-15 minute drive from wineries, a creamery, the beach, and other things to do. Karen was so sweet and accommodating. Her dog, Zeppy, is a gentle giant and Karen's strawberry rhubarb pie was incredible. I would recommend this to any one for a quiet weekend away.
