I do not know where to begin. My sister and I and our daughters and granddaughters take a girls trip every two years. We range in age from 10 to 79. My job was to find a home to stay in when we traveled to Memphis. I knew I found the right place when I called Bennie to clear up my questions. She cares and does everything she can to make sure people that stay in her home has everything needed from start to finish. Bennie's home is so interesting with art, books and a fun kitchen. We had room to spread out as needed and places to gather as well. And her home is warm, inviting and very clean. The bed were comfortable, coffee and tea provided and a great place to hang clothes. My daughter met and loved her neighbors. I loved her books and my 10 year old niece fell in love with Bennie. I did not recommend this rental for a romantic getaway. Every other group listed would fit well with this location. I hope someday to visit 5 Oaks and Memphis again. Our host gave us so many ideas and we followed through on many of them but missed some things I really wanted to see.
We stayed at 5 Oaks while in Memphis for a wedding. We arrived on a Wednesday and departed on Sunday and I must say, this was a fabulous location with a fabulous host. Bennie greeted us when we arrived and made sure we had what we needed to make our stay trouble-free. She open. Kind and accommodating with a home filled with art and charm. But most of all it was the back yard where we invited other family members (who elected to stay in a hotel down town) to share wine and conversation. There were six adults staying at 5 Oaks and we never felt we were stepping on each other. Yes, I’d come back to 5 Oaks!
We rented Bennie's home for a graduation weekend. It fit our needs perfectly! As a heads up to those who are having a large group at the house...actual beds are a king size waveless waterbed (I slept in it and LOVED it) a queen bed (great for a single or couple, and a single bed. The rest of the sleeping spaces would be on couches-which we did not need, so it didn't matter.
The back yard is very nice and welcoming. A hammock waits for you to jump in and relax! We also enjoyed coffee on her huge front porch one morning. Bennies late husbands artwork that adorns the walls throughout the home is just another plus to staying there.
Bennie also left us a very nice meat and cheese tray to enjoy upon arrival. Thank you Bennie!
Enjoy your stay with Bennie, she is a very sweet hostess!
RUN, DO NOT WALK, AWAY FROM THIS HOUSE. I would never feel safe staying at this home or in this area again and I have encouraged the owner and HomeAway to never let children be allowed here. A group of us were in town for a weekend wedding and brought along a 2-month-old and a 6-month-old as well as 2 babysitters. The owner knew all of this. Meaning, she knew our children were coming. We thought renting a house for the weekend would be the best bet to accommodate us. The home was described that it was located in Midtown, which I think has now been removed from the description - the neighborhood is far from what you would think when picturing Midtown. It's located in an area called Orange Mound, which we later found out has a reputation for carjacking, shootings and gang violence. It's on Buntyn Street. Friday evening we learned that Domino's Pizza would not deliver to our address for "security purposes." Our property owner acted like this was the first time she had heard this and was dismissive of the notion. We learned this while we were on our way to a rehearsal dinner and our two young babysitters were alone at the house with the two infants. The following day - Saturday, in broad daylight - my husband and another guest witnessed a male in the neighboring backyard unload a magazine into the air, then turn and locked eyes with my husband. This was also after a strange man walked through our backyard. The owner came over and tried to assure us she's never had any issue of safety and that this "sort of thing only happens on holidays like the 4th of July." Instead of trying to accommodate for the mishap, she asking us to not include this in our review, saying this "could ruin her business and she was just getting started." This is all on top of the house being dirty, rotting food in the fridge, and Uber drivers saying this neighborhood was beyond rough. My husband was unable to go to the wedding we were in town for because we couldn't think about leaving our children in that house alone. In hindsight, we should have packed up and left. After we checked out on Sunday, she texted me again to not include the events of the weekend in my review and proposed a tiny refund. I said that would not work. She has since ignored all my texts/emails. This way is better anyway - at least I have a clear conscience knowing I have warned others. She knows her home is in a horrible party of town. We paid a lot o be scared to death the entire weekend.
I loved staying here! The house was very beautiful and had a lot of throwback old style character, it reminded me of the house I grew up in. I loved Bennie, she was very informative of area and even willing to show me around !! My stay was very pleasant and I was happy to meet a new friend for life in Bennie! I would definitely stay again!
Memphis is an interesting place, and the stay at Five Oaks made this trip all the more interesting. Not only were all amenities (food, beverages, restaurants, etc.) you might want away from the house nearby, but also the home itself is an experience. It's set in the heart of the city, about 15 minutes max from anywhere you might want to go, walking distance from the Memphis fairgrounds and Liberty Bowl Stadium. The Cooper-Young district, with all of the possibilities that appeal to the younger set, is just around the corner, too. From the original art on the walls to the wonderful furniture to the relaxed, homey atmosphere itself, Five Oaks is just great. We felt like we were at home the entire stay, truly. Our group of four (plus the local friend we visited) made use of the entire place and were very comfortable. Bennie was very accommodating with everything, whether it was the time she met us or the helpful details she made clear about her unique home. As someone who has used VRBO/Homeaway many times, I can state unequivocally this was one of the best. Thank you, Bennie.
In addition to being close to Memphis's many cultural attractions, 5 Oaks is off Central Ave, a a 3 -5 minute ride to Cooper-Young and Overton Park (both hot spots for restaurants, shopping and entertainment - with Overton Park also being home to several theaters) and its a 7 minute walk to Liberty Bowl Stadium, home of the Annual Autozone Liberty Bowl Game . It's also less than 15 minutes from the MidSouth's largest Medical District anchored by the Methodist University/Mayo Hospital and the University of TN College of Medicine, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and LeBonheurs Children Hospital.
