About Bennie - Owner

I'm a Memphis-born New Yorker (lived in Manhattan 1968-78, age 25-35) worked in NJ 10 years as a planner/lobbyist while studying dance, theater and pottery (evenings and weekends). Now,recently retired as the founder/executive director of a culturally-inspired community arts center. Creative, energetic, thoughtful and grateful for a joy-filled life filled with good food (I'm a great cook), great friends amd great experiences. My favorite travel destinations are: NYC, Beaches, Mississippi River, Costa Rica, Greece/Turkey, Blue Ridge Mountains and the Biltmore Estate & Inn in Ashville, NC.

After a recent road trip to Albuquerque, NM (my first "guest "experience - FABULOUS) and Sedona, I have to add both to my favorite places.

I enjoy getting to know my guests over a cup of my homemade ginger tea or a glass of wine. However, it’s your call. My joy is your comfort and delight.

My motto: "Easy Like Sunday Morning"

Great Home and Bennie is wonderful!

  • 5 of 5

My friends and I came to Memphis for a music festival and stayed at this beautiful home. We loved it! Bennie was a fantastic woman - very kind, joyful, and friendly. The house is big and accommodated all of us very well. We hope to make it a yearly visit and come back to Bennie's! Thank you, Bennie, for all you did for us! I appreciate you so much!

Owner's Response: Stacy and the group of 6 young people (20's -something) were delightful. Thew were respectful, great too talk with and took great care of my home, followed my house rules and had a great time enjoying 5 Oaks both inside and outside (front porch and generous backyard). I look forward to their annual return and wish each a great year until then.

My wonderful experience in Memphis

  • 5 of 5

I do not know where to begin. My sister and I and our daughters and granddaughters take a girls trip every two years. We range in age from 10 to 79. My job was to find a home to stay in when we traveled to Memphis. I knew I found the right place when I called Bennie to clear up my questions. She cares and does everything she can to make sure people that stay in her home has everything needed from start to finish. Bennie's home is so interesting with art, books and a fun kitchen. We had room to spread out as needed and places to gather as well. And her home is warm, inviting and very clean. The bed were comfortable, coffee and tea provided and a great place to hang clothes. My daughter met and loved her neighbors. I loved her books and my 10 year old niece fell in love with Bennie. I did not recommend this rental for a romantic getaway. Every other group listed would fit well with this location. I hope someday to visit 5 Oaks and Memphis again. Our host gave us so many ideas and we followed through on many of them but missed some things I really wanted to see.

Owner's Response: Ms. Kathy, her sister, nieces and granddaughter were absolutely delightful to host. Not only did they leave my home as they found it, (clean and comfy) they made it better by providing joyful energy, lots of laughter and smiles and playful times inside and out. I'm a frog collector (sign of a healthy environment), so frogs abound in 5 Oaks and the "Girls” group made and sent me all manner of frog "stuff” (i.e. sign in pad, book, drawings) and several notes of thanks. They were simply wonderful warm guests who I welcome back to 5 Oaks, ANYTIME. After one negative experience with a guest, Ms. Kathryn’s review and the other positive reviews hopefully will help all who consider 5 Oaks for their "home away from home" will realize the "dangerous" review is baseless.

Great Visit to Memphis in May!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at 5 Oaks while in Memphis for a wedding. We arrived on a Wednesday and departed on Sunday and I must say, this was a fabulous location with a fabulous host. Bennie greeted us when we arrived and made sure we had what we needed to make our stay trouble-free. She open. Kind and accommodating with a home filled with art and charm. But most of all it was the back yard where we invited other family members (who elected to stay in a hotel down town) to share wine and conversation. There were six adults staying at 5 Oaks and we never felt we were stepping on each other. Yes, I’d come back to 5 Oaks!

Thanks!

Fun place to stay in Memphis

  • 4 of 5

We rented Bennie's home for a graduation weekend. It fit our needs perfectly! As a heads up to those who are having a large group at the house...actual beds are a king size waveless waterbed (I slept in it and LOVED it) a queen bed (great for a single or couple, and a single bed. The rest of the sleeping spaces would be on couches-which we did not need, so it didn't matter.

The back yard is very nice and welcoming. A hammock waits for you to jump in and relax! We also enjoyed coffee on her huge front porch one morning. Bennies late husbands artwork that adorns the walls throughout the home is just another plus to staying there.

Bennie also left us a very nice meat and cheese tray to enjoy upon arrival. Thank you Bennie!

Enjoy your stay with Bennie, she is a very sweet hostess!

Incredibly dangerous area; shots fired in backyard & pizza won't be delivered bc of security issues

  • 1 of 5

RUN, DO NOT WALK, AWAY FROM THIS HOUSE. I would never feel safe staying at this home or in this area again and I have encouraged the owner and HomeAway to never let children be allowed here. A group of us were in town for a weekend wedding and brought along a 2-month-old and a 6-month-old as well as 2 babysitters. The owner knew all of this. Meaning, she knew our children were coming. We thought renting a house for the weekend would be the best bet to accommodate us. The home was described that it was located in Midtown, which I think has now been removed from the description - the neighborhood is far from what you would think when picturing Midtown. It's located in an area called Orange Mound, which we later found out has a reputation for carjacking, shootings and gang violence. It's on Buntyn Street. Friday evening we learned that Domino's Pizza would not deliver to our address for "security purposes." Our property owner acted like this was the first time she had heard this and was dismissive of the notion. We learned this while we were on our way to a rehearsal dinner and our two young babysitters were alone at the house with the two infants. The following day - Saturday, in broad daylight - my husband and another guest witnessed a male in the neighboring backyard unload a magazine into the air, then turn and locked eyes with my husband. This was also after a strange man walked through our backyard. The owner came over and tried to assure us she's never had any issue of safety and that this "sort of thing only happens on holidays like the 4th of July." Instead of trying to accommodate for the mishap, she asking us to not include this in our review, saying this "could ruin her business and she was just getting started." This is all on top of the house being dirty, rotting food in the fridge, and Uber drivers saying this neighborhood was beyond rough. My husband was unable to go to the wedding we were in town for because we couldn't think about leaving our children in that house alone. In hindsight, we should have packed up and left. After we checked out on Sunday, she texted me again to not include the events of the weekend in my review and proposed a tiny refund. I said that would not work. She has since ignored all my texts/emails. This way is better anyway - at least I have a clear conscience knowing I have warned others. She knows her home is in a horrible party of town. We paid a lot o be scared to death the entire weekend.

Owner's Response: Ms. Cook’s review, a failed "blackmail attempt," is riddled with falsehoods (no shots fired in my bckyard) and reflects her immediately disparaging attitude toward me and 5 Oaks’ diverse urban neighborhood. My home is located in Midtown Memphis which is comprised of several neighborhoods. My Belt Line neighborhood is adjacent to Cooper-Young, separated by the Children’s Museum of Memphis and the Liberty Bowl Stadium. Less than a half-mile. As a mother, grandmother, professional planner, educator and arts administrator I’m proud to offer my home to guests of all backgrounds and take seriously ensuring that my home is comfortable, joyful and above all else SAFE and CLEAN. Without dignifying Ms. Cook’s lies, I want all who view this to know HomeAway/VRBO investigated this complaint (I supplied emails and texts to and from Ms. Cook) and wrote: “Thank you for your prompt response. We have made thorough notes of your comments and explanation of this unfortunate situation and now consider this case closed. All feedback is forwarded to owners, and we understand there are going to be miscommunications and unintentional circumstances that arise. At this time your account is still in good standing.”
