This romantic apartment is in the heart of Carcassonne's La Bastide, the old town. Only 10 minutes by bus from the airport and 5 minutes walk from the railway station you could not ask for a more perfect and convenient location in Carcassonne. Not only is the apartment in a quiet, privately owned town house dating from 1713 but it is on the top floor with a wonderful view across the Market Square of Place Carnot, Carcassonne's most famous market and the location for the weekend market and winter fairs. It also has use of a large roof terrace which in the summer gives unrivalled views of La Cite, the medieval castle and for the magnificent and world famous fireworks of 14th July. It is perfect for an alfresco breakfast or sunning yourself during the day or simply relaxing in the evening with a glass of chilled Champagne as the sun sets over the mountains in the distance. The flat has been completely restored in 2008 and now is a delightfully relaxing and romantic place to stay.
Carcassonne Cite: Carcassonne is has one of the most beautiful fairy tale castles to be found anywhere in the world. It is the cultural and historical capital of the Aude region sitting upon the Aude river and crossed by the breathtakingly beautiful Canal du Midi.
During the summer it is host to innumerable festivals, and has the largest and most spectacular firework display in France on the 14th of July. Even in low season and winter there is plenty to do with the winter markets, truffle and duck fairs and antique fairs. The Carcassonne Festival takes place throughout July with many of the events taking place in Place Carnot.
Cathar Country: The region around Carcassonne is world famous for the Cathar history, and for the many castles that were built from the 12th to the 14th century. Many of these have survived and worth visiting especially for anyone interested in the legend and myths of the Holy Grail. Within an hour you can be walking or skiing in the mountains of the Arriege, and within two hours in the Pyrenees. The number of places to visit in one week is almost unlimited and there is plenty to occupy you in Carcassonne alone for a week.
Eating and Drinking: Carcassonne sits on the edge of the Langedoc wine region and is literally surrounded by vineyards and wineries. We can organise wine tasting tours for our guests and advise you on local restaurants and local specialities. The apartment has a library of guide books.

About Alex and Pipa Francis
Pipa and Alex have lived in France for 10 years. With backgrounds in hospitality and wines it was only natural that we wanted to share our love of France and the Aude with our guests. We have recently opened a wine shop and tasting room in Carcassonne a few doors from the apartment which serves as a unique meeting place for guests, locals and visitors to Carcassonne.

We chose this property as it was as central to Carcassonne as possible. In the winter it overlooks the ice-rink and Christmas fair and the summer it is buzzing with the sounds and character of a truly French provincial town. The design of the flat means the bedroom is away from the square and very quiet, while the roof terrace gives unrivalled views across to the medieval castle.

Place Carnot Apartment

We had a wonderful time at this apartment and in Carcassone itself. This was our first time in France but hopefully not the last! Superb, clean apartment with amazing views from the rooftop terrace of all around Carcassonne. Alex & Pipa were extremely friendly and helpful and were just a phone call away if needed. The apartment had everything we needed and was an ideal size for a small family and within easy walking distance of all attractions and amenities. Obviously La Cite is well worth a visit as is the boat trip on the Canal du Midi. The area where the train station and Canal du Midi are is quite pretty and there are nice walks along either side of the Canal with beautiful views of La Cite. Restaurants can be slightly expensive but this is France! Although there are meals to suit every budget and wine is fairly cheap. There are excellent bakeries close by which we visited.
Lac de la Cavayere is well worth a visit and the stunning walk takes you all around both lakes (not many people seem to know about the 2nd lake behind) which is just as pretty, and had stunning views.

Wonderful apartment full of character and in such a great location
The apartment is in a great location, just off Place Carnot in the centre of town and so convenient for bars shops and restaurants. It is full of character having been built in the mid 1700s. OK, so the floors aren't level and some of the door handles are a bit wonky, but that adds to the charm and character of the place and make it unique. We loved it. The bed is antique and very comfortable and the rest of the apartment is well fitted out. It is on the third floor and the top two flights of stairs are a bit winding so you need to be well aware of that before booking. Overall, we had a wonderful five days there. The owners are Alex and Pippa and were very helpful with information and advice.
Cannot Recommend it
We, a retired couple, stayed at this apartment to visit Carcassonne. On the positive side, the bed is comfortable and the two main rooms are large enough. Also, it is pretty-well situated at the corner of a main square in the centre of La Bastide, the "newer" town, with restaurants around, although many were closed in the evenings in the shoulder season. It's about a 25-30 minute walk to the walled town. If you are driving, do not try to find a parking place near the wine-shop checkin, located about a block and a half from the apartment. You would have a better chance of winning the lottery. Set your GPS for Place Gambetta, ditch your car there in the underground parking and walk the 5-7 minutes. Despite many review comments about wifi, the owners said there was "never a problem"; however, it never worked. Although we must admit that they did keep trying, they really need to invest in an onsite router rather than trying to reach "free" wifi providers. The kitchen is small. The main problem is that the place needs work: the entrance to the 3rd floor unit is shabby with holes in it; floor tiles are loose; the sofa is desperate for replacement; among other things. We found the owners cheerful and friendly, but generally dismissive of any issues identified to them. In the end, we didn't stay as long as we had planned.
We thank Maureen for her comments and would like to respond. Fortunately as our many previous reviews testify this is a very popular apartment which and much loved and appreciated by most of our our guests. Unfortunately on this occasion it would appear to be the case that we could not satisfy Maureen and her husband, despite our best efforts.
We advise all guests to use the car park at Square Gambetta and not to try to park in the Bastide. Not only is it considerable cheaper ( 7 euros per day or 20 euros for a week) but is it secure and convenient being just 4 minutes on foot. These guests chose to ignore this advise and to try and park close to the apartment.
Many restaurants are indeed closed on Mondays, the date the guests arrived, but we have several which are open and that we can gladly recommend.
The sofa in the apartment does not need replacement; we discovered on departure of the guests that the spring mechanism for the sofa had been damaged and therefore did not close properly. It was a simple repair and if we had been advised at the time could have been fixed in minutes.
The apartment has two different free wifi services offered through SFR and Free. Both are more than adequate for accessing mail and most websites. For high speed or data downloading of large files and printing documents this is possible free of charge in our office. On the occasion of their stay there was a problem with the router for Free and we able to offer the options of SFR and Orange to access the web.
Regarding the property, it dates from the 1750s and is a lovely older style town house. The apartment is redecorated annually but retains many original features. The front door is the original and does not have any holes in it ( a small gap under the door perhaps?) and there are no loose tiles in the apartment ( one on the landing which has been repaired). The exterior of the property is scheduled to undergo refurbishment as part of the extensive investment being made in the Bastide at this time.
The Bastide is 15 minutes from the walls of the medieval Cite and is a pleasant walk along the river and across the Roman Bridge. Guest choose it in preference to the Cite as the place where local people live, the places of interest and markets and to avoid the throngs of tourists.
We really enjoyed our stay in this lovely apartment. The bonus was having brunch up on the roof top terrace. The view was breathtaking! All the amenities suited our needs. It was a very spacious apartment! The washer was a great bonus. The kitchen has the basics. We were able to have our coffee in the morning and place for a few groceries in the small fridge. We didn't cook, but it appeared to have the basics covered as well. The bed was very comfortable. It was a little disconcerting to see the head of the bed's legs propped on books. We realized the floor was slightly sloped. It is a 1700 building so there you go. We therefore did not attempt any romantic interludes. Also we could hear the neighbor's muffled talking so we assumed they were able to hear us as well. It's location was perfect. Just a short walk from the train station. It is just off of the square. Grocery store, cafes, restaurants, fromagerie, boulangerie, boucherie, and shopping were right within a block or two. We loved the easy walk to the old city.The Old Cite was a fabulous day spent doing the audio tour, shopping, and eating a terrific lunch. Yes the city is on a hill, but it was a nice bit of exercise. We would love to come back some day on another vacation.
For those who have mobility issues be aware of the stairs. This on an upper floor. The front door is a bit tricky getting in and out. Tall people be aware, the room with the toilet has a very low frame, my 6" boyfriend smacked his forehead every time he entered. I am 5"4' and had no problem.
Alex and Pipa were great hosts. We arrived on a Sunday and left on Tuesday so we really didn't get a chance to spend time in their awesome wine shop. We loved our complimentary bottle of wine. Once again another reason to come back! Thank you for a wonderful stay!
Great flat at an ideal location!
The flat is spacious and clean. It is situations in the buzzing square in the city, for music, food, shopping! One could not have asked for better hosts, so friendly, knowledgable and helpful! They will make you feel welcomed and at ease on your journey.
Fantastic location with a lovely roof terrace.
We had a very enjoyable stay in this apartment. It is well furnished and equipped and in a great location overlooking the square where there is a Saturday market.
The rooftop terrace has brilliant views of the skyline of Carcassonne and the old town. The old town itself is a fifteen minute walk and there are plenty of bars and restaurants in the vicinity.

With Carcassonne airport only 10 minutes with direct flights to London, Belgium and Ireland and Toulouse, Bezier, Perpignan and Girona a mere one hour it is an ideal destination for short This is the perfect place for a weekend escape, short breaks and longer rentals. The property is located just off Place Carnot, the traditional market square of Carcassonne in the medieval heart of the fortified old town, the Bastide. For visitors to the town a car is not required but is recommended for anyone wanting to visit the region in full. For drivers there is long term secure parking close by. Here you can find a paradise of street cafes, excellent value restaurants and Michelin starred restaurants as well as markets and shops galore. For history lovers and readers of Labarynth there are Castles, and Cathars, for gastranomes local wines and food and for nature lovers some of the most beautiful and unspoilt countryside in the South of France.
The owners have just opened one of the best boutique wine shops in Carcassonne a short walk for the apartment at 38 rue barbes. Here you can discover a world of wines from some of the best producers in the Languedoc and from further afield including Spain, Italy and Portugal as well as the new world. Regular tastings and events add to the attraction of this treasure trove.

Security deposit payable on arrival of €150.00. Rates include heating and electricity and tourist taxes. Towels, linen and cleaning of the apartment are charged at €28,00 per booking. Extra sets of linen are charged at €13.50 per set.
