About Steve Young

I grew up in Southern Illinois, and could not wait to 'Get Out,' 'Escape,' and go to the big city. I went to school in Chicago at the Illinois Institute of Technology, and left Southern Illinois far behind. I thought this was great.

I had a very successful career in the online advertising, marketing, and market research world catering to big pharma. In a normal year I would fly 125,000 miles and see many places, countries and sites.

As I grew older and my 'success' continued I felt more and more that something was missing. I began to yearn for the hills of Southern Illinois, the slower pace of life, and the people I left behind more and more.

I 2013, I came home for a few weeks to help my mother move my father into a nursing home. After this was completed I flew to Milan for business, and on my way back I received a call that my mother had had a stroke. This was a life changing event for me, and I never really went home.

My father spent the year getting worse, and my Mother spent the year getting better. When my father died in December of 2013, I decided to 'officially' move to Southern Illinois in order to spend more time with my mother and be closer with family. I also made the decision to leave the company I worked for and do something simpler, and local to Southern Illinois.

June 1st, 2014 I started my company with the goal to create vacation rental homes in Southern Illinois and help the area grow tourism. Southern Illinois is a beautiful and special place, and I would like to share it with as many people as possible.

Steve Young purchased this cabin in 2014

Why Steve Young chose Illinois

This property was an old Bed and Breakfast, and the view was spectacular. The property was foreclosed on and a friend that I went to high school with had purchased it and remodeled the main house. Once I purchased it I started refurbishing the guesthouse. Now that it is completed I think it is one of the nicest properties on the wine trail.

The property will sleep a maximum of 16 people, or can be rented to separate parties in the main house and guesthouse.

What makes this cabin unique

The proximity to wineries, and area attractions is also great for this property.

Peaceful, fantastic view, great place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

Simply put, we can't wait to go back. This cabin is tucked away in the countryside and yet it's only minutes from the highway. You really can't get any better than that. It's nestled along the wine trail and very close to Blue Sky Vineyard, which is an absolutely stunning winery (try the Bolle!). This cabin is great for two couples, as it has two private bedrooms with bathrooms (not to mention the jet tubs!). The fire pit was great and we really enjoyed it and the supply of firewood was a very nice touch. We came with two large bags of firewood, but the big stumps were great for keeping the fire going. Steve really thought of everything. If you're looking for a great little getaway don't think twice - you won't regret staying here.

Things you must do:

Visit Garden of the Gods - it's gorgeous.

Coffee lovers, go to Metropolis, IL, say "Hi" to Superman, then go to Big John - buy bags of '40 below Joe'. (Trust me!!)

Cyclists - bring your bike- this is hill country.

Try a Blue Moon Shandy (80/20 Blue Moon/Sprite) - ok, to be fair you can do this anywhere... but it tastes even better with that view!

Hike in the morning, rest in the evening – maybe with a bit of wine in between.

  • 5 of 5

With great access to major attractions and trails of the Shawnee National Forest and wineries on the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail, the Toolshed Corner Guest Cabin provides a respite for recovery from a few crowds and some back roads. It is peaceful, well appointed and supplied for a small family or two couples who want to relax in the evening so they can play during the day. The owner makes every effort to insure that all aspects of the rental and his communications with his clients are handled as one would want. This is an excellent property.

Little is left to chance.

A great overall stay!

  • 5 of 5

Very well-kept home, tidy, and clean. Five stars, but we didn't realize another property was so close. So a little less private than desired. We'd still recommend, for sure!
