I am a veterinarian who enjoys the country but works in the city.
The Owner purchased this estate in 2000
I wanted to find a place i would use which meant it had to be less the two hours travel time from home to home. I also wanted a well built older home with a classic look and lots of vintage details.
This house has such a peaceful location, i can watch the sunset over the water each night from the sleeping porch in the master bedroom. In the winter we love to crank up the fireplace in the dining room and make a large meal and enjoy the evening just eating, laughing, catching up with friends, etc.
We selected the house in rock falls because of its age and design in relation to our parties theme, The great Gatsby. And what a wonderful decision that was. The pictures dont do the house justice, it is even more dramatic in person. It has every nuance of a bygone era with all the modern conveniences we have come to rely on. Todd, the owner was great and made sure everything was taken care of for our stay. And Sue, the person who takes care of the house explained the house and its multitude of bedrooms and bathrooms and amenities perfectly. My 20 guests all had a bedroom, some with fireplaces, and plenty of dressing and closet space, which was important, we dressed in period garb for both formal dinners. As for the dinners, the kitchen worked out perfectly, plenty of oven and cooktop space to prepare 4 gourmet meals and a Sunday brunch, not to mention a wonderful bar that hasnt served that many Martini,s and manhattans in 75 years!!! I cannot recommend this property more, remember its age, add to that its character and location right on the rock river, we fished every morning and evening, and you have a perfect spot to host your next party or family gathering.
We enjoyed the house and yards. Plenty of space to play, visit, cook, eat and enjoy!
Sue was wonderful to work with and very responsive
We stayed at this house the summer of 2014 for a 4 day weekend. I had meant to write a review at that time, but did not get to it. As I was looking for homes again to rent, I saw this listing and wanted to comment.
The house, I admit, is very cool! Great Gatsby theme is correct. It was once a beautiful home. But as someone else commented, there are the guest rooms (lovely) and the slave quarters (not so lovely). We had leaking showers into the kitchen. The screen porches were unusable as they still had glass windows in all the screens that could not be removed. There were cobwebs eveywhere in the porches.
But all in all, the house met the needs of family reunion of 22. We are very flexible. the kids had a great time running around and exploring this large home.
HOWEVER, we were very disappointed, as we have many children who like to swim and were unable to do so. I emailed the owner several times asking about having a sandy beach on site, safe for children; and they reassured me that there was a beach. This property sits 20 feet above a rushing river, with a large line of thick shrubbery in between. Even if the shrubs were removed, it would be impossible for any kids to swim safely here..
We had a wonderful weekend with our family of over 20 people on July 24-27, 2015. The house was beautiful and very clean. The caretaker was extremely helpful, showing us around the entire house and offering her assistance if we needed anything by giving her a call at any time. Grandma Jean
Just spent a lovely weekend at this spectacular home! I felt as though I'd been transported back in time and truly got a taste of of a bygone era (without forsaking modern conveniences). The large kitchen with two ovens and two dishwashers was perfect for cooking and eating in with our large extended family.
Multiple bedrooms and living areas offered plenty of space for our party. The entire house was immaculate. Nice furniture and a well appointed kitchen with plenty of dishes and cookware easily accommodated our group.
The whole family enjoyed the patio and yard overlooking the river. I especially enjoyed the beautiful walking trail along the river in Sterling that you can access just a few minutes walk from the house.
I highly recommend and would definitely return!
Our family spends a weekend around Christmas to play games, cook, eat, visit and catch up with each other. This house was ideal for our needs. We used every room available. We played ping pong, billiards, cards, dominoes and heads up. We walked along the river. We used the fireplaces and gas logs. We enjoyed the large kitchen which was well stocked. Sue was very helpful showing us through the house. Our only complaint was no cable for the sports fans. Beautiful home, lots of space to spread out for our large group of 20 adults and children.
