10 minutes drive from Calheta, Jardim do Mar is a small romantic seaside village with sea on 3 sides and most houses reached by a maze of paths. Its small hotel, restaurant and 2 bars are walking distance to the villa which is down steps (5 minutes!) leading to the promenade (10m minutes!) and pebble beach. Enjoy the covered poolside patio furnished for secluded outdoor dining with stunning sea views, the upstairs balcony for the beautiful sunsets and the sound of the waves . All bedrooms and living areas enjoy spectacular views. Downstairs are the large open plan and spacious kitchen and living areas with 4 large pairs of sliding doors leading outside. Upstairs are the bedrooms with two bathrooms (one ensuite) plus a second living room with fitted bar and access to balcony. Equipment is luxury standard - air conditioning in the bedrooms, fully equipped kitchen, ice maker, satellite TV, large built in BBQ etc. Its cliff edge position is stunning but unsuitable for under 10s
Jardim do Mar : Jardim is a historic, unspoilt Madeiran village. It is small and compact - only a few hundred metres from one end to the other - and its highest point is about 50 metres above sea level. The road to the village leads to the car park and also down one side of the village, passing a smart restaurant and on to the jetty. .The village centre has a pretty square,a small hotel and a beautiful church.
Most villagers reach their homes on foot by the cobbled alleys spreading from the square. These alleys are interspersed by small plots for growing bananas, grapes and vegetables and many houses have pretty gardens with bouganvilleas and hibiscus. The villa sits at the edge of the village with stunning views of the sea and huge cliffs, facing west towards the sunsets over the ocean. The steps down from the villa lead down to a pebbled beach on the one side and on the other side the beginning of the lovely promenade along the sea and around the villag to the jetty
Activities: Western Madeira is very unspoilt with spectacular scenery for sight seeing and walking. Levada walks are exceptional and are generally easy (some can be precipitous!) but other walks usually demanding. A car is needed for nearly all walks.
It is possible to arrange boat trips and even big game fishing from the marina in nearby Calheta, where there is also an art gallery.Calheta has the best sandy beach in Madeira. There are a number of outdoor sea swimming pools notably at Porto Moniz. There is an intimiidating cable car ride from the cliff top just off the West coast road to Porto Moniz.
Further afield there are a number of botanic gardens, museums and a beautful cathedral in Funchal. There is an 18 hole golf course about 45 minutes from the villa and a second 27 hole course further east. Ferry trips from Funchal to the nearby island of Porto Santo can be arranged in Calheta.
However It is still difficult to beat walking around the friendly and beautiful village of Jardim !
Staying in the villa: The owners of the villa frequently stay there and are in regular touch with the two English speaking people who look after guests and the property. One cleans the house and lives just outside the village and the other lives in the viilage and looks after the pool and garden as well as being on hand to answer any questions or sort out any problems. On arrival you will be met in the car park and taken to the villa and shown around and if necessary given a hand with the luggage
The villa is in the village but on a cliff edge. It is very private and and its breath taking sea views are unimpeded on all sides. In order to manage the few steps to the property it is best to keep shopping down to amounts that can be carried in one go and to make some use of the local shop. At night the only sound you can hear is the sea.
There are excellent walking guides available in the villa and we provide our suggestions on the nicest places to visit near the village.
The villa is lovely, very tasteful and well equipped. It is nice and private and has the most wonderful views from all aspects of this well designed modern property. We ate in more than usual as the facilities and weather were great and the tourist season really just beginning, but Joe's Bar, which is a short couple of mins walk up from the villa serves excellent reasonably priced food and the staff (particularly Lino who speaks very good English) are very welcoming and friendly. The journey back from the bar is mostly downhill but can be pretty hazadous after a few beers!
The main thing guests need to fully appreciate is the long and uneven path from where you have to park your car through the village to get to the villa. Taking cases to and from was a challenge and you need to consider your supermarket purchases to ensure they are manageable.
We thoroughly enjoyed Madeira with it's lush dramatic scenery and the villa proved a fabulous & peaceful get away which is just what we wanted, even our 11yr old son ranked it as one of his best holidays ever and I would recommend it to couples and families with older children as long as all guests are mobile and fairly fit!
Many thanks Liz & David for a lovely hassel free booking & a wonderful stay.
This was our first visit to the beautiful island of Madeira and we thoroughly enjoyed our holiday. We were very pleased we chose this villa. All the information provided was accurate - the villa was in a lovely location, clean, well equipped and very well maintained. The village is lovely but shopping facilities are limited so a car is essential to get to local supermarkets and explore the island. There are a few nice eateries within walking distance. As mentioned in the description you need to be reasonably fit to cope with the walk from the car park, particularly if you are carrying luggage or shopping! Many thanks to Liz and David for your help and all the detailed information. We hope to visit again.
With very pleasant (mail)contact with the owners, we found the house as we expected: clean and well maintained, well furnisched "as at home" (everything you needs is available) and the very nice swimming pool is wellcome after a day walk in the mountains...! The house is good situated for exploring West- and Mid Madeira, however even the village of Jardim do Mar and the very helpfull local people invite you to stay some times "at home" to take avantage of the peacefull atmosphere of the village. We will certainly recommend this villa to our friends... and to ourselves for a next stay in the futur.
We had a lovely week in Madeira staying at this beautifully equipped villa on the south west coast of the island. We hadn't been to Madeira before, and had a very limited understanding of what the island would offer; thus we were delighted, and felt very lucky, to have landed in a really lovely village - Jardim del Mar - and in a really great property. The villa stands about 75 feet above the promenade and beach (stones - no sand) at the western end of the village. It has unspoilt views up the coast and out towards the Atlantic, and is extraordinarily peaceful - when the wind blows and the seas get up it is strikingly dramatic.
The house has everything you could want - three good sized bedrooms on the first floor, and a full floor open plan kitchen and lounge area on the level below. From here you can go out onto the pool area which has great sweeping views of the sea. Behind the village the sea cliffs rise nearly 2,000 feet, giving the villa the perfect backdrop.
The village has two bars - Portinho at the eastern end of the promenade is especially good - and unbelievably good value with lovely staff. There is also a hotel and restaurant in the village, as well as a local, and very basic shop.
Madeira offered a lovely week, with a hired car giving us access to the whole island in two days, and the weather good enough for some pool lounging and walks. It is a lovely place - best experienced away from the Funchal 'strip', we thought, and out on the slightly wilder parts. Just perfect!
We had a great time in this beautifull villa in Jardim do Mar. We do miss the ocean views, the sounds of the sea and the nice atmosfere of the house and the village very much! We loved the swimming pool ánd the binoculars. Every wave in the sea cán hide al whale or a dolphin!
Once again we were not disappointed on our third year of visiting, and we shall return in 2015.
The villa is extremely well appointed and the village of Jardim do Mar is delightful. We enjoy a quiet time but that is of our choosing, my husband enjoys deep sea fishing booked in Calhetta , although not so successful this year! We also do a couple of walks. Evenings were quite often spent at Joes Bar in the village, reasonable food and wine, also the world cup on TV!!!
Very much looking forward to our next visit.
Jardim do Mar is 2 km off the main road from the airport 45 minutes away. The area is very unspoilt and much favoured by discerning walkers; many stay in nearby Prazeres (10 minutes drive) with its levada and road access to the leading walking area of Rabacal . There is a sandy beach, restaurants, marina , boat trips and supermarket in Calheta (10 minutes drive)..Jardim do Mar is known in Madeira for its beauty; It is a historic village where the houses are reached on foot via the lovely square.and pretty pathways.Bananas, grapes and vegetables grow in profusely in many small allotmants.Jardim.do Mar has a hotel,a restaurant and 2 good barsserving food. Its shop sells the essentials - eg bread, water, beer. Jardim There is no road access to the villa; cars are kept in car park aboout 400m walk away; the last 50m is down steps. The beach below the villa is pebble and difficult to swim from but it is a lovely promenade walk to the jetty which is a swimming spot and is next to an attractive bar
