About Susan Johnson or Edith Kopman

Susan and her family have lived in the Datil area for over 30 years. Susan works in the outdoor industries of recreational wildlife and ranch & land real estate. When her mother Evelyn moved down from Canada they decided to open Tres Caballeros. Susan and her family maintain the bed and breakfast while Evelyn plants flowers, enjoys visiting with their guests. Because of the high elevation Evelyn needed to move to Salt Lake for her health. In July 2016 Edith took over taking care of the Bed N Breakfast for Susan. Edith is carrying on the same hospitality and care taking , with lots of flowers.

Susan Johnson or Edith Kopman purchased this apartment in 1998

You're headin' west on Ol' Highway 60 once you leave Historic town of Socorro, where the Bosque del Apache Wildlife Refuge is along the Rio Grande River, where tens of thousands of migratory birds can be seen each fall throught the winter. Keep on headin' west up into the mountains through Magdalena. On second weekend of July it is the home of the annual Old Timers Festival including a mini-cattle drive, rodeo and barbecue. Here was the end of the railraod and a center of large cattle drives many years ago. Once you leave Magdalena, headin' toward the sunset, you'll pass the Very Large Array, one of the world's largest astronomical radio observatories. Here the air is clear and crisp all year round. That is why the 27 radio telescopes are located in the San Augustine Plains, where there is very little pollution in the air. Scientist from around the world use these massive telescopes to study the universe. Then the Torstenson Wildlife Center donated to the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation with abundant in elk and wildlife.

As you cross the vast plains of San Augustine, large herds of antelope can be seen. You will hit the little mountain town of Datil, New Mexico, home of Tres Caballeros, the Inn of Three Cowboys. You stay on Highway 60 headin west, after mile maker 75, Tres Caballeros if located on your left. We are right on the edge of the Cibola National Forest where elk, mule deer, and other wildlife can be seen grazing the canyon meadows. We are on the north side of the Datil Canyon which you can see out into the meadows from the house. There are forest access roads a mile away. Take a hike up the hill in the back yard and you will very likely see wildlife and is a awesome view. In the summer there are lots of hummingbirds and gold finches and many other birds to watch. In Dec and Jan when we have snow there are many hills to sled and cross country ski on. We have clear pure sunshine 360 days a year. Very few days do we not see our potent source of life. Our nights are vibrant and amazing to watch the stars and milky way. With horizon to horizon view it is a wonder to watch the clear night skies.

On down Hwy 60 is the old American west town of Pie Town which is known for it's slice of life. They have been serving pie since 1922. The second Saturday of September they hold their annual Pie Festival with an old fashioned barbeque and dance, a pie eating contest, and a horned toad race. Hundred of people come and eat hundreds of pie in one day. Just 20 miles from Datil is the Historic town of Gabrielle which hold enactments of the corral shoot out of. Just another 20 mile west and south takes you to Quemado Lake and some real good trout and muskie fishin'. The 'gateway to the Gila National Forest' is on Highway 12. It will take you south to Reserve and Silver City or up into the Gila National Forest which is comprised of more than 3 million acres of wilderness to hike, camp, mountain bike, fish, or hunt in. We are out in the middle of now where with lots of wonders of nature around us.
