Luz do Sol is a self catering apartment, with a Tourist Licence, in the sunny village of Garajau, between Canico and Funchal. It commands superb ocean views over lush, mature gardens and is ideal for a couple seeking a relaxing holiday with or without a car. Located in a secure, private complex with lifts, Luz do Sol enjoys the benefits of a large garden, sunbathing terrace and a 15m oval pool, whilst having direct access to all the facilities of the village, buses and taxis. Within a short, easy walk from the apartment you can hire a car, dine in quality restaurants, buy excellent take-away meals or just have a drink in one of the friendly cafes. Freshly baked bread, vegetables and fruit, morning papers, general supplies and banking facilities are all at your doorstep. A short stroll or a cable car ride takes you to Garajau's secluded beach where you can dip your toes in the warm Atlantic Ocean.

Levada and Mountain Walking: Madeira's centre consists of rugged mountain peaks rising to a mile above sea level. These give way to forests of juniper, pine, eucalyptus, mimosa and laurel as you descend towards the sea. The dry lower slopes are used for farming, mainly vegetables for the table, but areas are also devoted to the cultivation of vines (for the famous Madeira Wine), sugar cane, chestnuts and bananas. Irrigation of the farming areas is provided by a network of water channels (Levadas) radiating from the mountains. This unique irrigation system offers walkers an unrivalled experience in that, besides having breathtaking and exhilarating mountain and coastal trails to explore, they can walk along beside these levadas from village to village and gain a deep insight into the lives and culture of the Madeiran people.

Eating Out and Entertainment: Garajau has several good restaurants offering local and international cuisine and a wide range of take-away food is also available, all these within a short walking distance of the apartment. Some restaurants further afield will even lay on transport from your doorstep. A memorable evening can be had by taking the cable car down to Garajau beach and eating delicious seafood under the stars at the oceanside restaurant. Music and dancing are available nightly in the hotels of nearby Canico de Baixo. Funchal, a fifteen minute bus ride away, offers a very wide range of restaurants, a casino, theatre and many open air events throughout the year to keep you entertained.

We fell in love with Madeira about 20 years ago. When we retired we made it our second home and we now have many friends here. The climate is superb, the people are gentle and there is so much to see and do.

Our reliable local representative speaks excellent English and can be contacted easily.

Why Steve and Barbara chose Caniço

We chose to live in Garajau because it has a community based around a handful of shops, friendly cafe/bars and restaurants.

Garajau is such a good base for exploring the island and has easy access to Funchal. Being keen walkers we enjoy strolling out to nearby beaches without taking the car, although if we want to drive anywhere the access to the Via Rapida (motorway) is only a minute or two away from Luz do Sol.

The apartment complex is centrally located in Garajau, well constructed and spacious. It is mainly home to professionals who work in the city.

What makes this apartment unique

Our apartment has a tourist licence, which means that it has been inspected by the Portuguese authorities and meets their standards of safety and hygene.

Luz do Sol is our home and is equipped and furnished accordingly so that both we and our guests can relax and enjoy this beautiful tropical island.

I had a really fantastic holiday with lots of walks, even walking 16 miles one day. I hope to return next year as I still have so many places I want to explore, I don't have my dates yet but will email when I get my schedule done.

Garajau is a cosmopolitan village noted for its impressive cliff top statue, Cristo Rei. English is widely spoken and the village provides everything the independent traveller could want. It is on a main bus route to Funchal.

Within 15 minutes' journey from Luz do Sol you can be enjoying a round of golf on one of the two top quality courses, walking a levada, going on a whale watching excursion, riding on the cable car up to Monte, visiting the beautiful Botanical Gardens and experiencing the charm of Funchal.

Santo da Serra (27 hole) plays host to the Madeira Open and is one of the most spectacular courses in Europe with panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and Madeira's rugged mountain scenery.

Notes:
Luz do Sol has a Tourist Licence and is exceptionally well equipped. It is ideally suited to the independent traveller. The complex has a lovely, peaceful atmosphere and a feeling of space. The comfortable lounge is equipped with a multi-channel TV and a DVD player. A range of books, CDs and DVDs is available for guests to enjoy. The sunny balcony has a table and two chairs for your relaxation and dining al fresco. The large pool has sunbeds and showers - please bring your own beach/ pool towels. There is plenty of drying space in the apartment 's utility room for your laundry. A cash machine is at the Amanhecer shop, 2 minutes' walk away. Parking is safe, free, easy, and very near to Luz do Sol.

Brilliant Apartment!

I just want to say that my 3 weeks here was brilliant. Apartment had everything you could have possibly asked for and Brian was at hand if any issues where to occur. Thankfully we didnt even call him in the end. Ticked all the boxes.

Great location and well appointed apartment

We really enjoyed our 9 days in the apartment which was very well appointed with a lovely pool. All arrangements including taxi transfer to/from the airport were highly efficient. The location was good in terms of proximity to Funchal and other attractions of the island. Top recommendation - walk at the far east point of the island.

Spacious, conformable apartment in a convenient location

We had an amazing stay on Madeira, partly thanks to having a great base to explore from! The absolute truth is that we were initially slightly underwhelmed by the area, until we found our way down to the Cristo Rei statue, cafe, and beach. It turns out that these are very close (walkable in about 5-10 minutes), but unless you know to look for the Cristo Rei, there are no obvious signs or anything for the beach. However, even before we found the beach area, the apartment was still very convenient to get to from the airport and it was an easy and comfortable spot to explore from with a car. We always easily found free parking right nearby, which was great. We didn't use the buses, but there were also regular buses into Funchal. In addition, just as a random tip, we liked Funchal much better in the evening after the cruise ships had left! In addition, the owners were very quick to respond, and provided really useful ininformation that helped make our visit go smoothly, and Brian was on hand and available to answer any questions we had.

The best area

If you are like me and go on holiday to relax and not shop then this is the perfect place to go. I had the best holiday in a long time and really enjoyed my stay here. The apartment is in a perfect area for quiet but only a short bus ride to the main city. I went on my own but did not feel threatened at any time and was not bothered by anyone. The apartment was exactly what I needed and the book of information was a real plus. Brian was very welcoming and gave me a thorough tour of the property. There was sun on the balcony from noon until 8pm so I didn't even need to go by the pool I could just relax there. I am waiting for my vacation dates for next year and will definitely be booking again.

There was everything that we needed there, the balcony has a lovely view. The location is great right in the middle of Garajau but with a quiet location. Great place for those who want to explore the island.
